My great-grandfather is Maury Nunes, full name Morris Nunes Vaz, the writer of the film. His brother Bob Nunes is also in the film, at the burger counter. My grandmother was dating my grandfather at the time, who worked on set. My grandmother claims to have written this movie but because of Unions and that she was a woman, the story would have to be credited to my great-grandfather.
George Burns did just that mid way a tv show to introduce a new actor to the ensemble; I saw that as a youngster, I thought it was real cool, been a fan ever since.
Thanks for this old movie with Tom Neal, Neal was quite a nice looking guy, too bad he had other problems. Loved Alan Jenkins, he was a heck of a guy. Funny. I've seen him in other movies. He was a character.
Starrett had a few movies before his iconic role in MANY "Durango Kid" westerns. He was my favorite western actor because his fistfights never went longer'n 30 seconds, and I esp. loved Smiley Burnett & the western musicians!
Yes, it was actor Franchot Tone he beat severely. Neal was an amateur boxer with a record of 34-3 so poor Tone got the stuffing beat out of him. He shot his third wife in the back of her head with a .45 pistol. He was sentenced to 1 to 15 years in prison. He was released on parole in December of 71. He died in his bed on August 7, 1972.
Tom Neal had a promising career until jealousy and his temper got the best of him. He was the star in "Detour" and starred with Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame "The Big Heat."
His wife Barbara shouldn't have antagonised him so much. Her on and off bull with different guys, mainly Francot Tone. was ridiculous, she knew he was jealous. Why did she just keep on with other men. She wasn't the one he murdered but I think she about drove him nuts. Then the next wife, does the same thing, it drove him over the edge. Men who are so jealous, don't think much of themselves, and they become abusive, because they lack self esteem.Women have a way of driving men mad.And they always blame the guy, because he's stronger, and women know they can get away with it. Women sometimes take advantage of that .who's going to believe, the guy no one. They belive the weaker sex. That's not fair. It really isn't. And they know it. They are just as wicked as the men who commit these crimes. Barbara Payton started it in Neal, I really believe that. Its Sad, also no one knows what he went through as a child either. He could have been abused himself..
I came across Tom Neal in a DVD collection that included "Detour". What a great noir film. Relentless and mostly undeserved misfortunes for the "hero". Glad to see him come out a little better in this film.
Many thanks for posting. Tom Neal was a very good looking guy and his future could have been so much different but fate did not treat him kindly. His life was quite a sad story.
Tom Neal was an uncouth rogue who beat fellow actor Franchot Tone, over a sot actress, and later was convicted of killing his wife- Gale. Not every "good actor" turned out to BE 'good'. "Fate" had nothing to do with his behavior!
@@DavidRice111 Thank you for your interesting contribution David. No doubt you know more about Tom Neal than I do. He was before my time but from what I gleaned about him I quite liked the guy. Of course Franchot was no model of decency either and possibly got what he deserved. Also the courts do sometimes get it wrong.I'm still inclined to view TN in a better view than you. Maybe I'm too compassionate. Cheers.
@@noddy8607 Aye, and I thank you, Noddy, for such a genteel reply. I only 'know' what I've read, and that was because I liked the guy as well. The fight with Tone was only what drunks will do, but shooting one's wife in the back of the head erases a multitude of good~ in my book...
How Very Innovative ! It must have taken a very clever girl or boy to figure out how to so convincingly disguise a camera as a cake ! Of course, the delusion only works whilst the cake is in the girl's hands - Looked phony as Hell in that dude's mitts ! TNX 4 Posting !
Alice....And what about the character of Harvard in this movie...talk about a nitwit...and what about the movies that have the police chief being inept and incompetent, and the police character of Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes stories, and the "hen-pecked" husbands in so many movies, and many more examples that portray the man as a buffoon. The movies take a swipe at both the man and the woman so don't feel so singled out.
“Susan Hart, assistant to private detective Russ Ashton, is given a camera concealed in a hat box and assigned to take a picture of a woman; but a gun is accidentally hidden in the box.”
Mr.Neal may have " developed" aggressive" tendencies due to his boxing record of 34-3 like Ali.whose brain was damaged by his boxing matches, developed Parkinson's disease.Concussions develop by hits to the head in a multitude of ways.
True I agree. And the story behind all his jealousy , is sad, His wife was in my estimation pretty terrible. This combined with all the other things that she put him through may have been justtoo much. There's only so much a person can indure. Enough is enough at Some point.
Stop with the excuses for this clown. How many other boxers have beat their fellows in a public brawl, and later, shot their wives in the head? This guy was merely a brutish lout, who refused to control his emotions to the detriment of those around him. ~ NOT a 'sympathetic' figure!
S Robin - I checked it out and he spent his last years working as a landscaper and gardener after getting into trouble a few times thanks to his violent temper. He was great in DETOUR
@@hilaryc3203 yeah and since you or anyone of us weren't there, then we don't know. Its so easy for some people to judge, and that's sad .people shouldn't assume anything.
"Russ" should hire a new secretary. "Susie" is enterprising, but a habitual botcher. I suggest as a replacement Myrna Loy (Thin Man series) or Diana Rigg (The Avengers).
People like you , well ? But by the Grace of God goes you ! Do you even know why he had a fight with Franchot ? Or is it something you heard or read somewhere? It could happen to anyone. You aren't a gossip are you? Or are you the kind of person who loves others misfortune? Who talk about others hurts and misfortunes as if you were talking about a grocery list.

This group of idiotic detectives are so stupid, they should definitely find other jobs. I know, it’s just a movie but their frustrating maneuvers aren’t even close to making common sense decisions! I know, it’s just a movie but it’s a dumb story!
