Same! I read this in 5th grade... Never forgot it. Never lost the interest in "survival" which bled into prepping!! (Not in an extreme, bunker building / boobie trap way) but never lost the love for the outdoors and what I would do in that situation!! Feels like a lifetime ago when I first read Hatchet... 5th grade, Which would have been 1991, I guess is in fact a lifetime ago. 😂

Read this in 5th grade. I dont think the teacher knew about the underwater scene, it kinda horrified me. But it became my favorite book for quite some time. I hear people saying this is a bad book now, but i dont think they've even read it.

This book was terrible then, and it's terrible now. Here's why: 1. Brian is annoying...and his whining and complaining and pity party is boring (We all have problems, dude) 2. His survival is completely implausible (no way a kid with no outdoor experience will make it through) 3. The book was predictable (even for a kid and every plot convenience benefitted him...) 4. The writing is overly dramatic over the most minute things. I would like to hear why you like it....because I genuinely...Genuinely...want to hear from soneone who does

@@aishabintabubakr4944ok. I loved this book as a kid. There are hundreds of survival stories of young (teenage) kids surviving on their own for a time before being found. A famous one just occurred in my area year before last. Kid got lost camping with his family and wasn’t found for 9 days. Granted, he had a pack full of hiking stuff, but regardless. Also, this book was compelling to me as a kid because his scattered, disconnected, often frantic thoughts ring true to the panic going through a kids mind when in crisis, often not verbalized like this, but a rush of emotions and images. Perhaps you could read up on the author before discounting a beloved book entirely.

I remember three things about this book from 7th grade. 1. I didn't read it, 2. When the teacher talked about it, I knew it was implausible, 3. When our teacher was asking "what animal Brian found in the woods?" I was bored out of my mind, chanted in my brain "Lions, and Tigers, and Bears...Oh, My!" shouted "Bear" and got it right

I love this book so much! Some of my earliest childhood memories are from camping trips. I've even seen home videos where my dad brought me camping with him, carrying me in my car seat up the mountain. When I had to read Hatchet in 5th grade, it may have been the only time I finished an assigned book before I had to. I still read it or listen to it often, as it still holds up. Just bought my friend a copy so next time we go on a camping trip, we can both have a copy. He's never read it and I know he'll love it. I cant wait to sit by the campfire after dinner and do some reading before we pull out the instruments. Pure peace.

I’m 19 and this is my first time reading this book. I always turned away from it as the cover did not interest me. Now that I was forced to read it for my major, I really enjoyed the story. Never judge a book by its cover!

I remember having to read this book in elementary school, but I liked it so much that I read ahead when I wasn’t supposed and ended up finishing it all in one night 😂

I HATE the way this book it wrote “he had to get the radio, he had to, he didn’t want to but he had to, had to get the radio, just had to even though he didn’t want to, he had to”

Love Paulsen's style. It's like Hemingway-lite.
