You're the last person I thought would make a video about this! And frankly, I'm impressed by the quality. The only nitpick I have is how abrupt the ending was, but other than that; the editing, commentary, etc. were all of a quality I'd expect of any channel specializing in this type of content. Although you should only pursue a video-essay path if you want to do it, I believe you could get a decently big following if you made a 2nd channel focusing on it. Most certainly, I'd watch it at least.

I think this type of stuff is common with all things that become popular. There will always be deplorable people in fandom's. It is kinda messed up that people start hating the game itself (denying themselves an amazing experience) because of these people. But at the end of the day I can't blame them. Sure it sucks but with some of the negative experiences people have had I might have very well done the same had I been put in the same situation.

Hence I stay away from "fandoms". If I like a game, I like it. If not, I don't. And I just play it on my own. Similar reason why I don't play online games.
@Disorder2312

Playing online isn't really the same as being part of the fandom though, at least not as bad. I wouldn't call that "similar", though i guess it depends on the game.

the one aspect that didn't helped in my opinions is how sometime "fandoms wars" happened, and still happen. with how... extreme fans can be, especially in the ut fandom, it had lead to some sad moment where two fandom, who had part that have a lot in common, end up fighting for whoever is "the best"/unique. my one go to exemple is the touhou vs undertale nonsense. both part where petty, and with how vocal the ut fandom was, it's something i've heard about even after the biggest chunk was over. ... now it's the fnf fandom who get the "stupid and cringe child fandom that it's cool to dunk on" tag. with more fandoms wars and relatively similar nonsense. part of why it feel just SO easier to just stay enough away from a fandom to not get to interact with... that. tho you do end up missing some very amazing things. for all it's potential flaws, I love how massive the AU chunk in the ut fandom is. and just as much, I find interesting how fnf is open to references anything. there really a ton of potential ideas and fun to have with those concepts, and it's a blast to see peoples create, even if most of it isn't my cup of tea.
@deltainfinium869
@deltainfinium869 10 месяцев назад
I've got to agree with this, although oddly enough the fandom war I noticed undertale most involved with was with FNAF (when it was popular) & stephen universe (once the UT fandom hijacked the stronger than you song). Never really been into Touhou, but I know some friends who are and it seems pretty good from what I hear.
@croissant2434
@croissant2434 10 месяцев назад
@@deltainfinium869 I've seen the steven universe one. and it's actually for similar reason: UT fans did a "bad apple" animation with UT characters, and because some fans thought it was ut original, it made touhou's fans mad. I think most of the heat is gone for the most part. the official friendship between Zun and toby did help calming it, I think?

To be fair, the main issue present in this video isn’t exclusive to Undertale, it is present in many fandoms, sexualization, pedophiles, and other really gross stuff. You pretty much summarized a huge issue in just a few minutes, with good examples and everything in-between. To think a lot of these problems would have never happened if everyone just kept their stuff to themselves... some of my friends hate the game itself because of overexposure and it's a real shame, because I'm sure they'd love it, but I also think it's kind of dumb to hate the game itself when it's a completely separate thing lol hate the fandom not the game dude!

Whether you love it or hate it, Undertale is still a very well known game to this day, although it’s a bit fucked that people believed that spoiling and treating others like shit purely for their decisions was a good idea, it’s most definitely one of the reasons why I choose the genocide run as a spite to what everyone else believes, because I know at the end of the day it’s just a game, and there no real consequences, it’s why I find a lot of villain Sans’s to be more interesting than the original, Dust, Killer, Horror, Insanity, all of them are great contradictions and spites to the people who over value pacifism over everything else Insanity is still my favorite sans out of all them to this day

The fact that you're so obsessed with all those cringey fanfics is honestly one of the reasons people don't like this game. The community cares more about their own idiotic fanfics than the game itself, and many of them transpose their made-up beliefs and wishful thinking about the game's plot onto real conversations about the game. Speaking as someone who loved this game until I was totally turned off by the fandom's unhealthy obsession with cringe (rather than just liking the game for what it is), you're part of the problem man. Don't get me wrong, I agree with what you're saying too, but at the same time, you're really not much better than the people you're complaining about when it comes to making this game look bad. Granted your particular reason for liking those fanfics is honestly the funniest one I've heard and I don't blame you with that reason in mind, but many people love that shit super unironically and care more about that than the game itself.

@@GigaLigma okay may I ask what the point was to come at me when the rest of your comment agrees with what I’m saying, what makes me part of the problem again? I’m sorry, but none of what I said had anything to do with hating on certain fiction or certain beliefs, what my comment actually implied was that I hated people who harass others for certain reasons, reasons which are stupid as they were before, which is why I choose a certain run, or Alternate Universes that are based on said run, as a spite to those who act all pissy for stupid reasons Did you even read what I said, or did you gloss over just to write a small paragraph of you saying that I’m “apart of the problem” with the added, “I agree with you but I still think you’re a piece of shit who is no better” topped with the fact that you think I’m one of those people who makes the game look bad? Really now? So me liking certain characters based on certain runs makes the game look bad, I’m sorry what the heck were you smoking when you wrote this, I mean come on, last part doesn’t make any sense nor did it even look like it needed to be added to the comment, “speaking as someone who loved this game until I was turned off by the fandoms unhealthy obsession with cringe” I’m sorry but you and I are completely separate people who have had completely different views of the game and the fandom, unlike you, I haven’t spent my entire life, dedicating myself to harassing, attacking, creating ships, and making weird memes about sans, nor do I condone the shit that took place in the fandom, I like the characters, the AU’s and the artwork, that is all Not forgetting the music, I also enjoy the fan music

Today we talk about Undertale, but I believe this issue is ever present in some regard or form in the videgames community as a whole. Similar stuff has happend with other popular games like Minecraft, League of Legends, Among Us and Fortnite to name a few. Whenever a fandom grows too big, there comes people that feel the need to "gatekeep" their newfound haven, a vocal minority that will taint the image of said game for other people. Of course, in games like the ones I mentioned, maybe because of the online aspect of them, it's not as bad on the "you're not playing how it's supposed to be played", although it does exacerbate the other issue touched on the later half of the video, where predators will sneak their way in and lurk for easy prey, leaning on the social aspects of the game. In games without online functionality like Undertale, this social gathering is done via the forums, art galleries, social media and other sites designed for sharing experiences with other players. Whenever one of those make it big, you end up with the three: overexposure via zealous fans (I'm referring to the ones that will not shut up about it until you play their favourite game), gatekeeping/criticism via puritans (the ones that claim to know the "true" way, the "only" correct way of playing) and predation via... well, predators (the ones that will look for bigger flocks of people to prey upon). It's not just Undertale. It's the Internet. Anonymity is a power too big for some people, and it shows everywhere if you look closely enough.

Something people don't understand is that Undertale resonated with people that were outcasts of society with mental and emotional issues, people with certain tastes, obsessions and traumas that they can't talk about in mainstream or what I like to call "muggle" company. It was the one time...something they loved, something they resonated so strongly with...became popular and mainstream, to the level that Sans made it Smash Ultimate, to the point that even to this day you hear its music EVERYWHERE.... And this in turn gave them something like a permission slip to be seen and heard, gave them the courage to be themselves more and more, out in the open, and brought them all together under the same game/banner. But like its explained in the video, they personally identified too strongly due to the previously mentioned mental and emotional issues. Any attack on Undertale was attack on them and their newfound happiness. They are the outcasts society due to their lack of social skills, emotional stability and healthy habits, and of course, their interesting taste in content. There's something in this video that is grossly incorrect, or at the very least I strongly disagree with. A lot of those "perverts" are victims of the very things they are being accused of, and the reason they have those tastes in the first place, the reason they are outcasts. The BIGGEST issue with the internet and social media is that its a big cluster of different people of ages, backgrounds, interests, etc, with NO SEPARATION. A lot of that content was meant for only a very specific audience and very harmless. Or as harmless as porn I suppose. Overindulgence is always a thing. But to hate Undertale and their fans for that, that never sat well with me. Trust me, kids aren't being brainwashed or conditioned by fanfiction (they read it, write it, print it out and put it under their pillow to enjoy later at bedtime, trust me I know this as I was one of them back in the 90s and I wasn't the only one), and its not used as tools to enact predatory acts. The real people to be concerned about are too busy doing the very thing. That direct message shown in the video had NOTHING to do with Undertale. It has NOTHING to do with the Undertale fandom. Any predator will slip into any fandom because fandoms are safe havens for people with mental/emotional illnesses, including people with bad intentions looking for vulnerable targets. What you described is not an Undertale issue. Any predator can come out of ANY fandom and slide into a minor's DMs for as long as fiction/fandom exists on the internet. It's an INTERNET issue. Undertale's popularity just brought it to light to some who had no idea. For every person who writes the kind of predatory message you put in your video, there are dozens and maybe even hundreds of fans just minding their own business and enjoying what they like, even stuff this video called "perverted." Most are introverted and stick to themselves anyway and don't seek out people, just sticking to their stories and fandom and art. Do they deserve to be hated? This video seems to be saying "Yes." Seems to be saying, "They did this. This predator's behavior is on them." And that's horribly cruel to a group of people just making art and writing/reading stories. Were a lot of the fans too much? Yes. Did they act too entitled? 1000% Yes. Were there among them actual bullies with toxic behavior towards content creators that should be called out because it needed to be stopped? HELL YEAH, IT WAS OUT OF HAND. That said....about the "perverts", no. That happens no matter what. Rule 34 was here well before Undertale. That has nothing to do with it, especially when its a group of people with certain traumas that were abandoned by society once they hit a certain age and left to deal with and process their trauma on their own and yet harshly and cruelly judged when they do. But it definitely did fuel the hatred that was already building for an obnoxiously tactless and annoying group of people. Still, to expect them to behave any differently is like expecting a blind person to see. It's the reason they are outcasts to begin with. Hating on something you don't even understand....benefitting so greatly from Undertale, only to shit on their fans once the popularity has faded...accusing them as a whole for something that is in human society regardless...and judging them for creating and enjoying content made for them and people like them... It's just not right. It's mean spirited and wrong. But that's just my opinion.
@Disorder2312
@Disorder2312 9 месяцев назад
I think it's natural that i feel only rightful about it. Rule 34 shouldn't be applied to games like Undertale. But you are using the same argument to justify it. You think it's "human society"? I don't think so. But that's just my opinion.
@GigaLigma
@GigaLigma 10 месяцев назад
Nobody hates Undertale itself, and it's not because of the fanbase being "too big" either. It's because the fanbase is cringe af, pretty simple. I loved this game until I met members of its fanbase and they basically ruined it for me by being so cringey and obsessed (plus many of them have such a warped perception of the game that they insist on sharing with others constantly). Frankly they ruin everything about it between the many awful fanfics people are unhealthily obsessed with and the general retardation people present with when discussing the game. I hate to be so blunt and mean about it but that's really the only way to describe this kind of fandom, and it's a shame because it's a really good game. Not saying the whole fandom is like this, but... honestly a whole lot of them are, especially the vocal portion. This game really just attracted all the most obnoxious kinds of people. And yeah I know there's a big issue with certain members of the community being overtly aggressive and hateful about expressing dislike for someone else's opinions or habits when it comes to the game, and that is terrible too. But I feel like a lot of people in the community also really need to think about what in the world they're doing that's annoying enough to make people hate them that much, because it isn't always because of something like "umg u did a genocide run ur evil."

As someone who was part of the fandom early on, its pretty clear that the majority of the people harassing youtubers were just, young kids who were passionate about a thing they like and couldn't help but complain if someone didn't get what they considered the best experience to them (The one they got, watched someone else get, or what was consider the "good" ending according to others). Add in that the game overall was just, something best played when knowing the less details about it (I honestly only learnt of the game from watching some streamer in 2015 fighting sans and had zero context of it, only saw a few minutes of it before deciding to get the game myself) meant that it was ripe with backseaters if you werent playing it on your own.

For what i thought was a music youtuber, this video was surprisingly really well made. Seriously, i feel bad seeing how you didn't get that much attention for something that well made. Now, enough with the praise, let's get to the critics. The whole Markplier part was pretty dumb. You should have searched for more youtubers not just him, because in my personal opinions, he's an idiot with no backbone. Of course he would be bothered by this much. If i show someone easily scared of light, do this mean that everyone should be afraid of it or label it as bad/toxic ? And another point, the whole passage about pornography and R34 is told in a confusing and kind of biased way. The fact that it was on Deviant Art ? Sure it's bad. But the fact that they made R34 of Undertale ? Who f*cking care, if it's on a site made for this kind of content and that no real persons is involved in it, then it's a big nothing burger. Overall the video is too short and lack a lot of context. Because it's basically just you saying that R34 and hardcore fans are the sole reason this community became like this. It's not. The memes aspect of the game and it's characters and how it saturated internet outside of his own fandom is partly what made peoples tired of it. I mean, at it's peak, you could hear megalovania or some variant of it everywhere. You also could have talked about how Tumblr worshipped sans and how ship wars or OC creators arguing also cultivated the toxicity of the whole thing. Particularly because Tumblr were some of the first (if not the first) to post weird things about the characters and played a big part in sexualizing them. So yeah, i think you did good for a first try, i still think that this community is such a gigantic toxic hellhole that you could have found way more and/or serious than just "fictional porn bad because it's somehow like sexual abuse on real person or/and would lead to it" and "Popular youtuber got sad and stopped playing the game, yet came back to it 1 year later". This whole video just feel like you quickly wanted to make this video to tell others how you know the culprit behind the bad reputation of the community. You haven't been active since 7 months so i don't really expect an answer. I just feel like ranting to tell you either stick to making music (i love your music by the way) or if you do this kind of content, try to do it more seriously.

The issue with undertale fans being far too aggressive to others for not doing things the way they want them to is even deeper than what you delved into with markiplier. I remember a story about an artist who went to an art convention of some kind, and a person came up to her and said they were a fan of her work. They ended the conversation by giving the artist a bag of cookies. However, the bag of cookies had a needles in every single cookie, and the artist was sent to the hospital shortly after. It was later revealed that the person actively disliked the artist for drawing undertale characters a certain way, and decided to bring her harm for it. Thankfully the artist recovered with minimal internal injuries, but suffice to say she’s never taking food from strangers ever again. This was one of the more popular stories back then, but it definitely wasn’t alone. There was other cases of this as well especially across the internet, and Undertale’s fandom deserved all the hate at the time imo. However I agree that the worst years of the fandom are over, and people should give it a second chance if they haven’t.

While this is an absolutely deplorable story about a person doing something disgusting just because they dislike someone else's art, I'd like to point out that there's also some merit to disliking members of this community for their cringey takes on the game and their constant oversharing of headcanons, fanfics, weird-ass art and such. A big part about what ruined this game to me was how its supposed "fanbase" always seemed to care WAY more about their own terrible fanfictions and headcanons than the game itself. It's a shame that there are also people in the community who are demented enough to go out of their way to hurt someone else just for drawing something they don't like, and that kind of blind aggression is definitely a reason I dislike the community too, but I'm just saying there's two sides to every coin and the other side's pretty annoying too.
