The first watch of this can be pretty confusing. But on repeat watches, it is one of the most tragic and beautifully written episodes. It reminds me of the the Nell episode from Hill House.

When Hannah wails, at first it can be a bit confusing and maybe even off putting to some. After rewatch it’s just devastating. So much hurt coming from deep within. The actress did an phenomenal job.

What’s painful is, the last one was a memory too. She was just remembering a memory. She said yes to Owen, but she can’t change anything because she already refused the first time. When she finally realized that she wanted to go with Owen to Paris, everything was already too late.

Unfortunately the high ups don't really take horror seriously as a genre, which is so stupid and stuck-up I can't even- but she absolutely deserves it. To me Hannah was the highlight of the season, everyone was fantastic, but there was just something about this actress/character

I have to say though, that this is kind of a cool form of ghost. You can talk to them, they are totally self aware, not like the Lady in the Lake who no longer is anything but manifestations of raw emotions. And at least in the case of Hannah, you can even touch them.

What a brilliant episode especially when Hannah gets back to the Owen interview memory. She is pretty much telling herself that there is something really wrong with Miles. A little more forcefully each time she returns to that memory. So, every time you see her spacing out, she is cycling through of all those memories and when she starts repeating her name, the year and the kids ages, that's her way of not getting overrun by the memories and it breaks the cycle Super sad when she decides to go after Owen & Jamie and then realizes she can't

The key is Peter. When he comes back after the lady of the lake takes him he can hold Flora’s doll ... until he realises he’s dead. Then he can’t. Hannah’s death was so sudden and she immediately met Danny, she couldn’t process her death. So they can all interact with her because she doesn’t know she’s dead.

Another piece of Dani's story was her relationship, or rather lack of, with her mom and how the fiancé's mother filled that role. Dani didn't want to hurt the only real mom she had. At the start of ep 4 sitting next to her fiancé were his parents, next to Dani was an empty chair.

My favourite episode. Owen talks about his mom's dementia at the start. Then we go on to see Hannah constantly living her past, continuously. Dementia lived out in front of our eyes.

Had a feeling Hannah was a ghost from the begining since she wasn't eating and seemed to always be somewhere else in her mind. Also had a feeling Miles was possessed from the start since he was acting like an adult sometimes, flirting with women etc, and more like a child other times.

I had picked up on Hanna never shown eating anything in past episodes and wondered why and I noticed the bottle of wine she was “drinking” was still full in one of the last scenes. And Miles is being inhabited by dead Peter. Now I know why...this place is worse than Hotel California!

Hannah was killed by Peter right before dani arrvied and she is now going through her own memories (the glue trap) Remember when miles told Hannah he had a bad dream that he hurt her and it made him sad .. Peter is taking over him and miles doesn't remember what Peter does. The first interview scene was the original memory when they first meet The remaining interview scenes Owen is basically Hannah.. she is using the version of Owen in her head to help herself remember things Hannah doesn't realize or remember that she is dead

Probably stated last episode but since you talked about it a lot before hand I want to elaborate a little, speaking as a lesbian born in the 80's. Obviously I didn't have to endure the 80's as a gay woman, but the story of Dani is one of 'Compulsory Heterosexuality' it's not uncommon especially for older generations to be pressed by their surroundings to be straight and as a result may not even realize themself that they were a lesbian. I get that its technically unfair to him too but to lay any blame on Dani isn't fair. I know of lesbians who were years into a marriage with children and unhappy for every second of it but not knowing why, only that they were miserable for no reason and they let it eat away at them until they were empty or they broke believing firmly that something was wrong with themself and they needed to just keep putting in effort but as soon as they realized "oh i like women" suddenly this flood of realization. for some denial can happen and its not always quick, but the scene with Dani and the girl fixing her dress, very well could have been the dam breaking for dani the sudden realization of "oh THATS why I'm so miserable" and at that point she cant keep it in anymore.

Watched a lot of reviews and learned a lot about this episode. Guess you can look this episode as dementia for ghosts. They memory hop so they can remember who they are. Hannah hasn’t accepted she’s dead so she goes on as usual. Her first time meeting Owen is her favorite memory so she always goes to that. Can’t wait to see you guys view on this episode during your next upload.

The OWEN interview was Hanna's subconscience slowly learning what had happened to her. "DENIAL"....."There's something wrong with Miles" etc The episode was a bit clumsy explaining itself and I wished Flanagan was behind the camera more often this season. Be reassured, it all makes sense by the end.

This also is the highest rated episode of the season. It was meant to make you feel confused and disoriented. It’s kinda like dementia were your brain is scattered and all over the place. I thought it was expertly done after several rewatches. Also, the acting... outstanding!!

I figured the Owen interview was Hannah trying to clue herself in on what she was denying, and it was the visage of Owen that she chose because she innately trusts him. So he was the best one to bring her out of her delusion into the reality of her passing.

This is my favorite episode of the season. The finale comes dangerously close to first place🥈 Poor Hanna, she deserved better.... Peter is such an a🤬🤬h🤬le, he didn't have to kill Hanna. 🤔 thing though, remember when Hanna told Peter, if he ever tried to take any of Charlotte's things again; she would "drag him out by his hair and throw him in that dirty lake" I guess she foreshadow his death👀 Hanna right now is in denial regarding the fact she is dead. Apart of her knows the truth but she's not facing it. The Owen in her head is her subconscious trying to get her to accept the truth. Great reactions guys as usual ❤

Realizing that while Hill House’s ghost mechanics were a metaphor for trauma and mental health, it’s so interesting that Bly’s is a metaphor for Alzheimer’s and unhealthy relationship dynamics. In Hill House’s case, unresolved trauma and not acknowledging and treating mental health issues make you a ghost of yourself- you’re already half dead. In Bly’s case, the terror that is Alzheimer’s causes you to essentially haunt yourself. You’re just drifting in and out of your memory, a lot like how both stories portray time as non-linear. And with the metaphor for relationship dynamics, Peter’s abuse was already scarring Rebecca, and later Miles and Flora by asking way too much of them. Allowing someone else to possess you (in both senses of the word) makes you a ghost of yourself as well. I’m so glad that Flannigan chose to do such different takes both seasons. If this had been another story about generational trauma, it would have been too similar to Hill House. I can’t wait to see how he switches things up again with The House of Usher.

One thing I caught this go around was when Peter was killed by the Lady in the Lake and came back out of the room (as a spirit) and seemed to not remember what happened (that he was dead). He took the Lady in the Lake doll from Flora and was able to hold it, but the moment he remembered and realized he was dead, the doll fell through his hand. That explains why Hannah was able to touch/hold things even though she was dead. It's because of her denial.

One thing to keep in mind with this episode is that the entire thing was in Hannah's memories. And memories can be unreliable. Thus the scene with Owen constantly changing. Hannah's subconscious was just trying to work things out. Hannah seeing Peter's death though... my theory is that ghosts can see others ghosts memories or something?

I think your theory is right! I think they just don’t necessarily have to be conscious of the other ghost there. Maybe it’s the same as the confetti idea, that if you’re traveling through time through memories, you could literally end up seeing anything, because it doesn’t have to be a POV from you but what was happening in that spot in that moment (aka the hallway when Peter died) 🧐

@Zsuzsanna Varga that's why I said "they just don’t necessarily have to be conscious of the other ghost there." To be more specific, I think two things are happening here. She's in Rebecca's memory, because Rebecca is currently going through her memories, but she's seeing Peter in a moment in time (like confetti) like I described before. Hannah herself doesn't understand it, so it makes sense for it not to be explained but for us as the audience to gather the details and make sense of it. I understand it may not be exactly as I see it, but I don't think it's a plothole.

This is the episode that I thought would answer some questions, but all it did was complicate things until they fully explained it. It's honestly very confusing in the first watch, but what is clear is that T'Nia Miller/Hannah Grose killed it in this episode.

time is a construct. humans experience time linearly where as the ghosts of Hill House and Bly Manor have no fixed tether or anchor to help them perceive time as relative.

Nikki I love your theories--not because you're right (although sometimes you absolutely are) but because we get to see (and remember) the whole process of trying to figure out this puzzle. One tiny clue--Hannah is the only ghost everyone can see, even Jaime. Who can see ghosts and why is a bit complex.

The episode is metaphoric allegory for dementia with getting lost in time. Castle Rock S1E7 "The Queen" is very similar in concept, I would encourage that series as well.

No I’m with y’all, in my opinion there aren’t a lot of big tells about the time period and you quit caring as you watch the show, but I figured it out in episode 3 when I saw that huge technicolor scrunchie. They don’t sell scrunchies like that anymore and they were all the rage back in the early 90s.

cried by the end of this episode, So sad... poor Hannah. She cant change her memories, she can't come back to life, she can never truly be with Owen :( If you recall, when we saw Peter leave the bedroom, he didn't realise he was dead and the kids saw him and he could pick up the doll and interact etc. But the moment he realised he was dead, reality kind of broke for him and the doll fell from his hands. It took concentration for him to pick it up again. I think for Hannah, her death was so quick and nobody else knew it happened so nobody could tell her... and so she went into a deep denial and carried on 'living' But she wasn't eating and drinking, was always spacing out etc.
