The best case of this is San Marino. It's a microstate completely inside Italy, but still independent. Like other microstates, its capital city has the same name as the country. Despite its size, it has several municipalities. If you're in the City of San Marino, you're also in the municipality of San Marino, in the country of San Marino.

If you’re curious as to the actual reason why the entire country took the name, it was because the king who would eventually unite the whole island chain (Kamehameha) was from the island of Hawaiʻi, and simply brought the other islands under his already established rule. Had the ruler who united Hawaiʻi been from one of the other islands, the country and island chain could very easily have been called Maui or Oʻahu.

We got several of those in Argentina. Córdoba (city) is the capital of Córdoba (province), and the same goes for Mendoza, Formosa, Santa Fe, San Luis, Corrientes, Tucumán, Neuquén... I'd say roughly half of our provinces.

This actually makes sense. What doesn't is the USA capital, the city of Washington, which is nowhere close to the Washington state. And which also officially isn't in any state and isn't a state itself, and it actually has a different name, District of Columbia, to show that it's a federal district and not actually a state. It's really confusing because there's also a country names Colombia but they're not directly linked. So the city is abbreviated as Washington DC.

If you are offended that the Hawaiian government was overthrown in such a way, should you not also be offended by a thumbnail that, in a political climate characterised by so much racial tension, will clearly come off as race-baiting to many people? Judging by your doubling-down on it in this comment, I can only conclude that your choice of thumbnail was very conscious and intentional. If you want to acknowledge the fact that yes, the annexation of Hawaii was in part justified with racist rhetoric, couldn't you just mention that in your video and maybe give an example? By doing so, you could show in what way this historical event is relevant to current politics. The cycle of conquest outside of European colonisation is fairly different though, in that most conquers annex land to actually incorporate it and its people as a part of their civilisation. Colonialism specifically made conquered people a resource to exploit, as was their land, which leads to a very different dynamic. If civilisations are wolf packs in normal cases the losing wolves will be incorporated into the new pack or chased off, but under colonialism they're kept as spare meat and breeding stock.

Not necessarily, though the US coup & annexation is certainly not the worst case scenario. Japan almost certainly would have invaded, but then they'd be freed after WW2 like most of their other island holdings. Russia couldn't have done anything, they're the first world power to be defeated by a non-european country (Japan). The USSR might have tried interfering, but NATO would have interfered too and so it'd be similar to any other communism vs capitalism battleground. Probably ending up western aligned but independent after the USSR collapsed. China is certainly an option now, but they've only really been a threat for the last 20 years or so. That's an extra 100-150 years where Hawaii could have aligned themselves with the west, just like all the other small pacific islands. If france/UK hadn't done anything by the time the US interfered, they would never have. Other pacific island countries have remained independent. If the US hadn't staged a coup and annexed it, it's likely it would have remained independent - barring any temporary WW2 occupation. Hawaii seems to have about as much culture as the natives in NZ. Which is to say, a reasonable amount considering being conquered, certainly better than Australia/Canada/mainland US, but still a far cry off what they used to have.

Hawaii is out in the middle of the Pacific and in the days before international air travel, is the size and location for a large military presence. Monday morning quarterbacking is always easier but considering the era, taking possession -- legally or not -- was still the basic method of international foreign policy.

I will not make an example of reversing the races because there is a bias and it could have consequences for me, but i trust your intellect to make one yourself and realize the bias. For me it feels the same as writing "the Chinese took it" and not "the Asian took it". For the Hawaiian of the time the specific origin of the people probably didn't change much. The video is talking about dates that are 200 years ago + in the end of the day Americans were European emigrants.

Well, The people who wish for independents wish for it for similar reasons as America did in the past. They don't feel American and they don't want people from outside deciding things for them. It isn't a surprise that some of them don't feel American, most of their shared history with America is being bullied by America, and they are far away from America, physically and culturally. It is not about changing the past, it is about changing the present and future of Hawaii

But even without considering that, I can't see a net gain from splitting. US citizenship is such a valuable thing for future prospects and travel, even without considering the other services the federal gov't provides. Yea they wouldn't have to deal with federal bs, but they'd still inevitably be influenced by america just b/c of their location. The more I think about it, the more hawaii independence sounds like Brexit (which we still haven't seen the full negative repercussions of yet imo, and some were hidden by covid).
