Dacre Stoker’s long history with the Olympics began in 1976, when his hometown of Montreal served as the host city for the summer games. During this time, he got a close look at the Modern Pentathlon and decided to spend the next four years training to qualify for the 1980 Canadian Olympic team.
As a combination of five different sports-fencing, swimming, running, shooting, and show jumping-the Modern Pentathlon proved a complex challenge. Dacre worked hard to build up strength across the multiple sports, learning from his coaches and trying his very best all the way through the qualifying trials in San Antonio.
He finished in second place for Canada, earning him a prized spot on that year’s Olympic team. Though before he left for Russia, where the 1980 games would be held, everything changed. The United States, Canada, and other nations decided to boycott the Olympics in protest of Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan-ultimately ending his dream of becoming an Olympic athlete.
But that was far from the end of his Olympic journey. After returning back to his everyday life in Montreal, he graduated college and became a teacher and coach-using his skills from Olympic training to help other athletes reach their peak performance through hard work, smart strategies, and grit.
In this video, hear how Dacre went on to coach Canada’s Olympic Modern Pentathlon teams and the reigning world champion in court tennis.
