Those traditional hymns were the soul of Christian education. In my church ( Canada,Presbyterian) they have been replaced with others, less musical, less inspiring and unfamiliar. It's like they tried to ruin it. I don't go anymore.
I'm a big fan of Bruce Gore but he doesn't really understand this passage. Few do. The propitiation was not to justify men, but to justify God for forgiving people freely on the basis of faith. God forgives sin for free but for he had to demonstrate that forgiving people of was not unrighteous on his part because he too had "skin in the game": [Rom 3:26 NASB95] [26] for the demonstration, [I say,] of His (God's) righteousness at the present time (long after Abel), so that He (God) would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Jesus didn't suffer much. He led a relatively cushy life (he was rich from the Magicians' gifts, healthy, and ) and a relatively painless death. His suffering lasted three hours and not the several days of increasingly unbearable pain that most others experience. The reason he shouted "it is finished" is because, miraculously, in answer to his three prayers in Gethsemane. Fortunately, suffering isn't redemptive. However, according to Matthew, it was required to fulfil scripture: [Mat 26:53-54 NASB95] [53] "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? [54] "How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, [which say] that it must happen this way?" However, according to Hebrews, his prayer to pass the cup to someone else was answered: [Heb 5:7 NASB95] [7] In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. [Psa 22:19-24 NASB95] [19] But You, O LORD, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance. [20] Deliver my soul from the sword, My only [life] from the power of the dog. "Substitutionary Atonement" is blasphemous and stupid because it is built on the supposition that two wrongs make a right. They don't. This is the logic of substitutionary atonement: God: "You raped my daughter. How about if you kill my son and we'll call it even"? Sin is not a misdemeanor. The heart of the Gospel is Leviticus 19. Yeshiyahu 8:20 To the torah and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Your gospel appears to be hasatan's gospel: freedom from YHVH's Torah.
