I'll sadly agree that Cutler is the best QB the Bears have had since Sid Luckman. However, you should be ashamed of putting Cutler anywhere near the same category as Payton and I'm sure every Bears fan can agree with me on that. I really hope you were joking!
Walter's runs, his courage, determination, & passion for the game, are emotion to watch. I'm a Giant's fan, but Walter transcended team loyalties. He was simply the best to play the game, EVER!
The GOAT. Don't @ me. Don't tell me about Barry Sanders or Emmitt or Marshall or whoever else. It's Walter. He LITERALLY WAS THE CHICAGO BEARS OFFENSE. They had Bob Avellini, Vince Evans, Mike Phipps, and any other scrub you could think of pre-Jim McMahon. I mean JIM MCMAHON was the best QB he ever played with and it's not even close. Best blocking back of all time. Top 3 pass catching running back with Marshall Faulk and Marcus Allen. Was probably their best QB until 1982! And produced with the entire offense having to key exclusively on him because they had no one else. Plus, he was a 1000 yard running well in to his 30's...consistent, excellent, durable, and versatile. No question he's the best to ever do it.
There are many great backs, but if you were building a dream team of all the great NFL players at each position, there’s zero doubt the man in the backfield would be Walter Payton.
The best overall Rb of All time. Hands down. He did everything a rb was suppose to do BETTER THEN EVERYONE. We love you Sweetness. Thank you for the Great Memories. Man "How Sweet it was"
What was amazing about Payton was the Bears offence was so one-dimensional that everybody in the stadium knew he was getting the ball - and he still rolled up the yardage. Don't care about what they say about Tom Brady, Jim Brown and Jerry Rice, Sweetness was/remains.....the greatest.
He was the most complete player in history. He had it all. He was one of the powerful HBs in history, and he was one of the greatest finesse runners as well. He was only 5-10, and he was hands down the best blocking back ever. He could throw, and catch. He was a quadruple threat, and he never went down easy!
I passionately and with humility want to say thank you mr payton. Your play initiated me into sports in general. You were my 1st (and dr j 2nd) sports hero. You never complained and was always a true class act and role model for kids like me. Thanks again sir for the times.....much love.
Everytime I even see walter payton football life coming on nfl network I start the tears.im 39 and live near chicago all three of my young sons know who he was and what he stood for.more than just football...
20 years ago this week. He's the reason I love football and the reason I'm a Bears fan. Always my inspiration. Never give up, never give in, never die easy. R.I.P. Wally. x
I'm a diehard 49ers fan whose always hated the Bears with a passion. However, you have to love this guy. The music at 3:38 gets me jacked up every time...
The year that Payton had 1852 yards (1977) was a 14 game season. Averaged out to a 16 game season Payton gets 2116 yards ... exceeding Erick Dickerson's record of 2105 (1984).
Walter Payton broke the rushing record, Barry Sanders would have broken the record if he didn't retire, and Emmitt Smith broke Payton's record. It's interesting that none of them were big RBs.
bigger backs typically retire sooner due to all of the punishment they take. plus true legends are usually do it all players. look at what happened to earl campbell for example
Yo Yo I'm not old enough to have seen Jim Brown play, but I do remember clearly the days of Walter Payton and Barry Sanders and that kid from Dallas. I don't remember his name. Barry Sanders was true sweetness, to take nothing away from #34.
Emmitt was a product of his offense. Not that he was not a bad RB but his record was without a doubt due to that offense. You look at the receiving corps, his FB, the TE they had, that brutal O line and Aikman. Talent wise, a person could argue one of the most all around talented offensive starting lineups ever. They created so many mismatches and there were so many threats / weapons that you could damn near take a lesser RB, plug them in and still get good productivity from that position. Maybe not a record.. let's not go that far. But imagine the gawdy numbers Payton or Sanders would have put up if either of those two played in that offense The best Sanders ever had in his offense was Brett Perriman and Herman Moore for a couple of seasons. Payton.. lol, people say Gault, horrible hands, good speed. But his best two receivers were Dennis Gentry and Dennis mcKinnon.
hironimus1971 no, emmitt put that whole team to the next level. Line suddenly got so much better when they got a back that hit holes better than anyone else
My all time favorite player since I was 4 and they won the Super Bowl. And an ever greater person. Only player I was that big of a fan of since is Kurt Warner. Both are so humble & opposite if most superstars these days who feel entitled to everything
There are two things about Walters running that make him stand out to me, and that I love so much. 1. When he lowers his head, overpowers the defender with his helmet nearly touching the ground, and then springs back up like a mousetrap and keeps chugging for more yards 2. When he slips, because it is always with so much force you wonder how he is ever able to right himself. So effortless
@@mattr2055 if that doesn’t convince you, his disease definitely stopped him from establishing rushing records. It’s called the Walter Payton award for a reason
One of the things that made Walter Special was that he didn't do all that yelling and Talk loud like some other players Do yet he was One Baddest Never ran out of bounce to avoid contact
I no longer watch the nfl. However, i am ecstatic i was a fan during #34's rein. I wasn't a bears fan but i had to watch just because of Payton. Awesome doesn't come close to explain the excitement he gave me. He was thee APEX!
Most complete running back of all time. I don’t care what ANYONE says, Walter Payton is one of, if not, the best running back in NFL history. He could play probably every position. He beat Jim Brown’s record. JIM. BROWN. This guy was a legend. He will never be forgotten by any fan or player in NFL history. God bless Payton.
My cousin was lucky enough to work in the Bears front office during their glory years. He has told a story many times of once walking down a hallway at their facility when someone snuck up behind and proceeded to lock him into a bear hug from which he could not escape or even move and then hearing a loud laugh that belonged to Walter Payton. My cousin is about 6'2, 260 lbs and a fairly strong guy. Said he never felt so helpless in his life for those few seconds. Said there was not a nicer or more approachable person in that building.
I am not from america, but I love watching football. Seeing Walter Payton run and his work ethic, I really want to know what kind of person he was. Each of these players have a story to tell.
Best all-around back of all time. Running, blocking, receiving, route running...no one came close. Jim Brown had the power, Sanders had the moves, and Smith has the yards, but Payton encompassed it all.
Yo Yo at the time when Jordan came into the NBA, it was thought that a scoring champion could never lead a team to a championship. Also, it wasn't thought that teams could build a dynasty around a shooting guard. All teams thought they needed a great center or big man in order to win championships. Jordan changed the way people thought about the game.
Chicago Born&Raised He was on his way to continually losing. Lest we forget there were no more great centers except hakeem and the gr8 teams were aging or retired. Perfect time for the bulls really
Walter Payton along with Jerry Rice were my favorite pro football players of all time. When I was a kid I used to get into arguments with my friends over who was the better running back between Walter, Earl Campbell, and O.J. Simpson. My argument for Walter was that he could catch, block, return kicks, and throw the ball! As great as OJ and Earl were, they couldn't catch a cold. Plus Walter did not have one offensive teammate in his career that is in the Hall of Fame! He may be the only player in the hall that can make that statement!
And to think the man never suffered injury. He said it was because of his limbering exercises before the game. "Loose as a goose" as they say. But this brother died way too young. He expended his life's energy in a short period of time, but to his glory and sacrifice. The LORD knows the man's heart, and will judge accordingly.
When a man, no, a beast, like Jim Brown says "Give me the heart of Walter Payton!"...you had better believe that Sweetness is the best RB to ever play the game.
MY DAD AL CAMPANA PLAYED FOR THE GREAT BEARS'1947-1953* MY DAD AND I WENT TO THE BEARS BANQUET SAT AT THE SAME TABLE WITH WALTER AND HIS WIFE*HE WAS SUCH A GREAT MAN GAVE ME AUTOGRAPH'S PICTURES WITH HIM * ALL AROUND NICE MAN*HE SAID TO ME *WHEN YOUR DAD PLAYED THAT WAS A REAL FOOTBALL PLAYER*THEY GOT LOW PAY AND WENT BOTH WAYS*THEN WENT ASKED MY DAD FOR AN AUTOGRAPH *BEARS WILL BE BACK ON TOP AGAIN*GO BEARS*
