I'm not saying Leo is not a good actor but the only character imo I think he played one that close enough to resemble a broken man was The Revenant. I feel like other characters he played in a way has a certain "quirks" that makes you go oh that's classic Leo character. Like gatsby, wall street, inception, catch me if you can, once upon a time in Hollywood even shutter island. But Phoenix used to play a broken man e.g Johnny Cash in Walk the line, The master, you were never really here, her and even everyone believed he was out of his mind with I'm still here.

I worked with Cult Awareness Network for over 15 years and the escapees from the Children of God were some of the most damaged people I ever encountered. Phoenix deserves the deepest respect for overcoming that experience to the point where he is winning Oscars. Respect!

To be honest, watching this I also forgot his brother River. I didn't really know much about River until I saw him in Indiana Jones 3 , and thought he was great, but that's all and about his unfortunate death, I never saw Stand By Me or any other film or TV he may have been in and knew nothing about Joaquin until I saw him in The Gladiator and Signs film.

sally kilby well then please let me be the one to HIGHLY recommend stand by me (literally known as the best coming of age film) running in empty (which river was nominated for an Oscar) and the thing called love with Sandra bullock Samantha Mathis and Durmot Mulroney. Plus river was booked for interview for a vampire (with Tom cruise AND Brad Pitt) he was also booked the for the basketball diaries which went to Leo after rivers death. Plus the director of the titanic said river was they’re first pic for the film until he dies of course.

I think that’s not for you to say. He could have gotten out in time, could have avoided the abuse within the cult. An absolutely fantastic actor. As good as he was in “Joker,” his performance in “The Master,” was one for the ages. Just incredible. His life has not been easy and full of tragedy. I love his protection of animals - his acceptance speech for ‘Joker” was absolutely superb. Glad he has a lovely lady who loves him in his life. Truly an inspiration!
