I just don’t see how anyone could dislike it because it wasn’t a mystery. I must have cried at least three times. I cheered for Dodo at the end. I just bought a second copy today to gift to some lucky person in the future who hasn’t read it yet.

It was my 2023 favorite book! Loved it! I loved Deacon King Kong, so it was so great to read another fabulous book by James McBride! Great review as well!

@@mariannadavis1922 I read that book way before I started my channel so I never did a formal review for it. I remember the basic premise and that I liked it though. I think he has a new book coming out in September and I will likely pick that one up too.

I loved this book. It was my first James McBride. I then went on to read Deacon King Kong and loved it. It had all the vibrant characters and rich community that The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store had. I would actually like to read them both again at some point.

Just finished it last month. I am like you and was keeping the mystery in the back of my mind the whole time I was reading it. I do think the mystery was an important part of the book so I disagree with comments that it didn't need to be there. If it wasn't there, it would have been a different story in my mind. One thing I wonder if you noticed or remember - there were a few points when the narrator kept referring to current times - I thought that was wild!

Glad you liked the mystery, too! And once it was revealed I was so pleased to see that person get what was coming to them. Your observation is really interesting. I don’t remember picking up on it but that’s crazy! I loved this book and think I’ll reread it at some point in time so I’ll keep that in mind.

I was talking to a random stranger at an airport about books and she just recommended that one to me. She said she loved how he depicted his relationship with his mom and how she raised several strong and successful children. I immediately put it on hold at my library because her love of this book was absolutely infectious. Hope to get to it soon! Take care!

I can definitely see your point about the pacing. I read a lot of slow paced books where it sometimes takes a while to get things moving and it can impact overall enjoyment. Maybe I’m so just so used to slow books this one seemed fast 😂🤣😂
