Lying just off the coast of West Scotland, the Hebrides archipelago is made up of more than 500 islands and islets.
Isolation from the mainland has made it the perfect breeding ground for millions of creatures, making it home to some of the largest gatherings, and greatest spectacles on the planet.
Over 35,000 Grey seals choose one small beach to give birth and do battle for breeding rights. On other isles, some of the world’s largest gatherings of sea birds engulf precipitous cliffs in a bid to raise their young.
On the Isle of Rum, Britain’s largest land mammal, the red deer, prepares for the annual rut, while Golden eagles patrol the skies anticipating their next meal.
For thousands of years, people have battled with the Hebridean elements - even the Vikings struggled to survive. The surrounding seas are some of the most treacherous on the planet and the roar from the world’s third largest whirlpool can be heard up to 16 kilometres away.
Stories of mermaids, giants and troll-like creatures litter the island’s shores, and evidence of recently abandoned communities adds more myth and legend to these mysterious lands.

Centuries of grazing and lumber plundering have depleted the islands of trees and bushes, like so much of the UK.

Just wondering.. at 29:12. "The standing stones at kalanish were erected around 4 000 years ago (+/- 2000 BC). And legend has it the Giants who once lived on the island were turned to stone as a punishment for refusing to convert to Christianity." These poor Giants were punished quite prematurely, like 2000 years early. Or this fact is just wrong. Just wondering.

The end was horrible. The killing of those birds and their parents crying out. Horrible.

And they're killed before they can breed. Im amazed the practice has lasted 500 years without killing off the population. It was sad as anything seeing the Puffin gazing out to sea knowing they mate for life & having just seen the black backed gull catch one. But thats also nature & I guess when mankind lives on the edge of civilization there's a need to live in a more ruthless or dispassionate manner out of necessity. Of course if they don't harvest the birds then they all migrate soon after. However it looks more like a luxury situation now. Oops, traditional.

I so hope that you don't eat ANY meat, ANY animal at all! Because then you'd be a hypocrite. Oh! Plants also scream when you cut them or pull them up by the roots. You just can't hear it!

They only harvest the fledglings . Out of 5000 they harvest 2000 for sustainability. Still horrible though cause there are chickens available
