Nonetheless, we must have a worthwhile opposition in the House of Commons. Sadly, The Reform group are not helping with that- they should sort out their differences and remain true to the Conservatives and provide a united front. As Hesiltine recently stated why must everything be about CHANGE. The use of the word is the easiest and most common vote catcher. Our population is going to go on climbing, (also influenced by immigration) putting further pressure on our NHS: people are living longer thanks modern medicines, again putting more demands on hospitals, and the care sector. Apart from these issues State schools are already struggling at full capacity and they need to focus on raising their standards. Starmer talks of training thousands of new teachers; but they will need several years in harness before they can be considered effective. So more pressure will be immediately applied to the already trained State Schools. However undaunted, he intends to ruin a cost effective system of private schooling (developed over hundreds of years) which reduces the burden on the state by offering hundreds of scholarships and bursaries to bright youngsters. In some cases 10% of the pupils at these top private schools are in receipt of these awards: some pupils actually pay nothing! It should be remembered that these have Charitable status. Solid and united opposition is required to make sure that any changes that are proposed are debated thoroughly to be able to gain government approval. Anthony Seldon wrote an excellent book entitled The Impossible Office ie The PM.
