My experience attempting to run the Hellbender 100 mile endurance run. I failed to make it, but had a very positive experience. Much respect to the other runners, the race director and volunteers that made the race possible. The epic race course with multiple 3,000 ft to 4,000 ft climbs in the Black Mountains near Asheville North Carolina made for a grand adventure. But my lack of specialization in training proved to be my downfall...

Just started following you and really enjoy your videos. I appreciate your honest post race analysis. I’ve had a race like this and had a similar self reflection. I’ve relied on grit and determination to get through some of my races, but some races demand a little more. Totally get what you went through. Thanks for sharing! Get those calves strong and have a great racing season! 🙂

Thanks for your positive encouragement! I've already crushed a hill workout in Ohio :) on our way out North and West as we are traveling--can't do that in Florida! After this Hellbender experience, the most appealing Ultrarunning races to me are these tough mountain ultras. It was very exciting to be climbing mountains on technical trails. Thanks for commenting :)

Thanks for sharing this. I love the transparency and being strong enough to call it a failure. People fear away from admitting anything is a failure and in doing so limit their ability to learn from it. Seems you learned a lot. I’m much like you I’m that I’ve gotten away in not being properly trained for a particular race and I’m now starting to realize I can no longer do that. Good luck on your next one and stay warm in those frigid 69 degree temperatures!

KP Kelly Thanks for your comment :) Yeah, I'm not afraid of failure that's why I keep increasing the difficulty of these challenges 😉 and temp was in the 30s Fahrenheit when the sun went down... ouch, that was a shock to my system! Ha ha
