The Helmet Holes CONTROVERSY! (and how I'd fix them!)

If you've been around the LEGO Star Wars community for the past few years, you've definitely heard of the helmet holes and the discussion/complaints around them. My main goal with this video was really just to illustrate that the problem is more complex than people make it out to be by talking about various proposed solutions and why they (probably) wouldn't work.
I'm not sure if I made my stance clear so I'll plop it here where 4 people will read it. I don't have a problem with these helmet holes and I think over-focusing on them is detrimental to many peoples enjoyment of what I believe to be a Golden Age of LEGO Star Wars. I genuinely harbour no ill-will to anyone who doesn't like them and are vocal about it. I think if we're dividing and hating over a detail THIS specific and niche, then we're just looking for conflict lol
I put a lot of effort into this one, for no reason in particular other than I wanted to push myself and try some stuff. Don't really think that was worth it lmao but hey I had fun at least :D

What if when they had redesigned the helmet, they could put bumps on the visor like the city motorcycle visor that would fit in the indentation above the bump where the holes should have been if they slightly modified it as well as the holes on the other helmets. Then they could have put the holes in the right spot while only slightly modifying the visor and helmet and possibly make the visor come off a bit easier.

comments on two points: 1. smaller visors break easily, they aren't as sturdy as I had CAC visors break on me. 2. rebel pilot helmets were reverted because they couldn't fit in the snowspeeder

4:21 My personal solution is to move the bottom dot up to where the middle of the circle meets that line going round the front of the helmet. Or if this makes more sense, move the top hole down so the diameter of the hole is the same height as the line.

I share the same opinion. I’m not sure how well it would look or function, but maybe some costume designer could try and see.

I agree, and I'm surprised I haven't really seen anyone talk about this. Believe it or not, the Mandalorian helmet holes are higher than they are supposed to be to accommodate the visor, even though Mandalorians never use them. Nobody complained about this in their entire nearly 14 year existence, because they looked good enough to work; not so high that the rangefinder is noticeably misplaced, but not so low that the visor is impossible to use. Lego could also benefit from this, as they could save costs with a single "one size fits all" helmet that matches the style of other helmet holes (P1, Arc Trooper, Mando), and is more kid friendly than the current one because the option for customization is not only kept, but it is improved because the rangefinder could also rotate without falling out like the current P2 helmets.
@Fishysalmon02
@Fishysalmon02 7 месяцев назад
I have a 6th solution. If you look at the current helmet, you can see that the nubs that connect the visor don't reach even half-way through the hole. If you make the current hole a dimple instead of a complete end-to-end hole, it'd still work. Combine that with removing the lip around the hole, and you how have a perfect connection for macros and visors, that doesn't show you the head color from the side and doesn't effect the eilhouette from the front. But what about rangefinders? Add the holes on the bump too. that way rangefinders connect in the right spot, and because the other one isn't a full hole, it looks like there's only one hole.

Making accessory pieces dedicated to p2 helmets would still be the best option in my opinion. The ones we currently have are perfect for Mandalorians and work great for p1 helmets too. I don't think it's a big issue if the new visors are not compatible with them, they already have their own ones. Introducing a second version of a type of piece is not the end of the world

You also have to realize that the more helmet mold variants they make, the less molds they can use elsewhere in the theme. Lego only has so many molds being produced at a time, so having multiple kinds of helmets would cause a sacrifice somewhere else. Honestly, I don’t even notice the helmet holes unless they are pointed out to me or I’m actively looking for them, so I don’t really care that much, but just giving them white heads underneath helps (heck, Lego could just print the heads like Captain America’s head and have a base white head with a clone face sticking out the front).
@zacharymessner6157
@zacharymessner6157 7 месяцев назад
It’s worth it tho to use one of the molds to fix this issue because it looks absolutely awful and ruins the whole profile of the helmet a white head wouldn’t fix anything as the color of the head isn’t visible through the hole and the overall shape is still ruined
@gechoman44iwantahippo
@gechoman44iwantahippo 7 месяцев назад
@zacharymessner6157 Like I said, I don’t even really notice the helmet holes unless I am looking for them. Also, I assumed the main issue was the heads underneath? Is it really that there’s a second round spot under it? No offense, but that seems kinda nitpicky to me.
@zacharymessner6157
@zacharymessner6157 7 месяцев назад
@@gechoman44iwantahippo To each their own but it’s a glaring issue to me that I can’t unsee, and there’s not an issue with the heads under it it’s the fact that there’s two dots on the side of the helmet making the design just look plain lazy and the fact that they run the profile of the helmet by making it look square when you look at it from the front, only troops that use the visor make it look good
@AVI_Parrot
@AVI_Parrot 7 месяцев назад
My personal "fix" to the issue would be lowering the helmet holes and creating a more accurate phase 2 exclusive visor. As for the macrobinoculars, maybe LEGO can figure out a way to still fit them in the new helmets, like putting them upside down. This however creates the issue of needing 2 visor molds that LEGO would have to keep supporting, which until I watch this video, I never would have considered.

My choice is the dual molded visor with lower holes for the rest, my idea however is to just go back to the old design because that could actually fit a visor. It's not stable but it works. However, this means no rangefinder.

In my opinion. It's Impossible. LEGO's main rule is that a Brick from 2003 and a Brick from 2023 can connect. The same is with The Visor piece. Ironically that's because The phase I clone helmet is inacurate with The Visor. I think that LEGO Has a choice. Accuracy or their rule. The Phase 1 and phase 2 helmets Are too different for both to be Perfect. I believe it would take redesigning the Visor and The phase II helmet, so that it'll work for both. The truly best idea is a new mold for The Visor. It would not break The consistency rule. The Phase II helmets could have holes for The antena. The only problem is removing The Visor piece and Im just saying that I think its a price worth paying. The helmet holes and visors were designed for phase 1, and theyre inacurate but now we can't do anything about it
@TrevorMuraoka
@TrevorMuraoka 7 месяцев назад
Make a new helmet mold proportioned similar to the arc trooper. The macrobinoculars work on that helmet. If you make a new visor it removes backwards compatibility with Phase 1 and Mandalorian helmets, requiring 2 new molds instead of 1
@user-mp8qg5tb5e
@user-mp8qg5tb5e 27 дней назад
Two things, they could just have one mould with the helmet hole in the right place for normanl clones and ones with rangefinders, then a second mould that is higher up for characters with visors. Secondly I love it when people complain about it, because as long as it gets me a more accurate and better product

Thanks gor explaining this issue! Obvious solution is having 3 helmets. One with no holes, one with 1 hole in the low position for the range finder. And one with 2 holes in the high position for the visor. This way kids can play and won’t get confused, and adults, collectors and customisers are happy. Lego cares about quality, but they care even more about efficiency, so this solution is unlikely.

I feel they should just change the antenna piece by changing the connection of the piece (the circle that attach to the helmet) a little higher so it looks good with the new helmets and kinda working on the Mando and phase 1 helmets.

What most people seem to want is for the holes to be lowered, without realizing how tricky of a situation that becomes. In my opinion, what LEGO did was the best course of action, without having to use too many resources to make new custom molds for other pieces that attach or dual molding helmets. I barely notice the holes anyway, and I'd rather have them spend their time and resources designing higher quality sets than have helmets that are slightly less square. This is extremely nitpicky of the LEGO community, and it seriously annoys me how so many LEGO Star Wars fans just refuse to shut up about two tiny little holes on a helmet.

Remove the bottom hole. It's a kids' toy, not a 1 to 1 scale replica. Make some shorter range finders, so they look less goofy but are still compatible with all helmets. And a new visor piece would be nice too. Smaller, more accurate to the movie, but functional with all helmets still.
@joshuapeterson8292
@joshuapeterson8292 5 месяцев назад
The most simple way to fix them is to just change the visor mold and put the holes in the right place so the range finders can also work. Sadly, Lego designers are idiots and won't figure that out.

people seems to forget the price of a lego mold . A mold anyone can buy and use at home tha thas lego quality is at least 1500$ for one 2x4 brick . In french tv they talked about 40k per mold in the industry . one mold for the helmet v4 , one for each of the accessories + all the new molds they would have to make only for a very few selection of figures to please fans it would cost them millions (because they need several for each piece and the place and people for it) . The new helmet isnt that bad , if adults complain about the inacurracy of a toy they should move to models or 1/6 scale hot toys . What i would really want lego to do is to stop listening to people like mandr and the scalpers and let go a little bit the leash on designers , we havent got a sequel set in ages
@GreenBlueWalkthrough

Yeah no industry is like that though... If you stop lisntejning to press and fans you get less sales... and last time I checking kids aren't buying $200+ sets nore buying $500 worth of clone troopse4rs over night every few months and the issue with the designers is to much leash but having none and their clear bordum when maing sets they don't care for like prequal sets.

@@GreenBlueWalkthrough having 12 people buying for 1000$ a year is worse than having 10000 kids buying a 15$ set . Expensive playsets are around 150 - 200 , it may not seem much but parents do buy these for birthdays worldwide and there are millions of birthdays every day so thousands of buyers . They also buy sets kids wants during the groceries , generally 10 -50$ . Scalpers may be buying 800$ sets (generally they buy for cheaper because of vip points , sales etc) but they arent equal to thousands of kids buying every day at full price

To be fair all of the above Lego has done or other not Legio people have... Like I have a mass produced Rebel pilot helet with trans orage duel molded visor... Yes it;'s more expensive and less elegent but... Lego does worse nonsense all the time... like look at Lego mineract and Lego mario for exemple... every wave has at least 1 excusive elemnt with print that will naver be produced again for themes much less successful then star wars and in cheaper sets too.

This is a great video explaining the issue that the Lego community has with these helmets. I'm on the side of the camp that sees no issue as it is exactly what I was waiting for. I loved the P2 helmet design in the Star Wars universe and couldn't wait for Lego to make them customizable. After 17 years of waiting since 2005 Lego has finally delivered. Now I understand that they aren't perfect and by all means you can disagree with me. But the moment you use speech to discriminate and lash out against someone else is the moment your "opinion" is turned into an attack on free speech.

Look, with all due respect, I think this exaggerated discussion about holes in the helmet is kind of stupid, because fans spent years asking Lego to put them in. Now that people are complaining, sometimes I don't understand it, but it sounds like they're complaining. With the hole in the helmet, they are the same people who will buy hundreds of boxes to make an army and sometimes I think that's a bit hypocritical
@FabuBrik
@FabuBrik 7 месяцев назад
The outrage is a bit out of hand but people are entitled to their opinions and also the degree of that opinion. My issue is with LEGO themselves in this. The initial problem was introduced due to sheer laziness on the design team to minimize efforts and costs. Okay maybe someone higher up is dictating that to the designers. If that's the case, the response to the outrage has been abysmal. At best we have fans who could go either way with it and at worst we have fans who can't sleep because of this atrocity. LEGO's response has basically been "yeah deal with it" and that's only making it worse.
