@@grizzlyboys3234 Is he 24 or 34? Kirk is 36 that's twelve years older. But he is too old at 24? If he plays 8 high level years for Atlanta, that's bad investment? And he would still be younger than Kirk at 33. Seriously? You all jump on a narrative and believe it even if it makes no sense. You all act like he is going to be aging in dog years are something.
This is beautifully said. I too was shocked the Falcons drafted Penix 8th overall but given the explanation from Terry/Raheem of wanted that "insurance" of never having to have a QB situation again, I immediately was on board with it given the Falcon's previous season. "Nothing's more important than a QB" which was a statement said over and over which is true. Doesn't matter what talent you have offensively or defensively, if you don't have a sound QB the season is over and Falcons previous season was a testament to that. So , as a Falcon's fan, I respect the pick.
Now you have a starter that knows he won't be around in a year or two and a young QB that could have started elsewhere. Not good for the locker room and did it for a 23 year old with a history of injuries. On top of that the offense systems that the two are accustomed to are totally different. This was an incredibly dumb pick and shows why the Falcons will be drafting in the top part of the draft for the foreseeable future.
This is a great take! Colin breaking it down and verbalizing it the way he did changed my perspective. Although I was more baffled than angry. But everything gon be alright.
I wanted Penix before the Cousins signing but thought they might wait till later since they signed a cousins but when it comes down to it, you want to draft a franchise guy if you can and they believed he could be that guy so why not? The fact he gets to sit for a couple years is only going to solidify him as a sure thing. I'm here for it.
But Penix was available in this draft and wouldn't have been a couple picks later. Although I was looking for a defensive pick, the move is making more sense to me. Not a catastrophe.
I agree, Raiders or Saints would have taken him, maybe even Seattle@@shonuf5152 - I still hold out hope he gets traded to Seattle, we love him here no matter where he plays. Amazing character, spirit and just so much fun to watch play.
Drafting Penix is a Chess move, not checkers. You can flip Kirk at any time and people will be happy to pay that salary and give up top picks. If you could buy picks from a team, how much would you pay for the picks Kirk can get you?
@@RRR-ox9ud no they won’t be willing to. If anything history has shown us is that it gives other teams leverage because they know you don’t wanna pay that salary hit. That and Kirk is getting old.
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🙂👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🙂🙂🙂 you're the man rise up dirty birds 🏈🏈, I totally agree it's about time someone spoke about the great quarterback we have with Michael penix 🏈🏈🏈🙂👍👍👍. KING G 🏈🏈😎.
Same here, I take Taylor H. again as a back-up or D. Ridder even thou I know their not a #1 QB and get that top defensive player at #8. If Cousins doesn't perform/injured and Penix does, we have another Matt Ryan 50 million dollar cap hit next yr with Cousins.
@@Clwcch you read my comment wrong. I feel good about the Falcons right now. You worried about cap space when the NFL raises the cap every season. Cousins contract was always a 2 year deal with the Falcons able to cut ties after those 2. Combine that with the fact the NFL constantly raising the cap, Falcons are fine with cap space. Matt Ryan’s contract was a different issue that’s not comparable to this. End of the day back in 2021 we failed to find a successor to Ryan and we got Mariota and Ridder for 2 seasons wasting the talent we had on our team. Now we have a QB who can win now and in 2 years if Terry and company feel like it’s time to move on to Penix they will and we have a 26 year old QB who can be around for long than just 3 years. Btw Cousins was drafted at the age of 24 and didn’t start till he was 26/27.
If Penix can read defenses then I think he will possibly be the best QB of this draft class. Penix already looks like a seasoned pro. He looked great at the combine which could have been bad for his draft stock if he didn't impress but he was great he really stood out as clearly the best QB at the combine.
NOW the Falcons look like bonafide geniuses!!!! Read the tea leaves. They’ve had piss poor QB play the last two years since Matty Ice left. They knew they had to solidify the QB spot long term.
Colin, we never agree, until now.. jets 4 snaps into their season,, their season season went to hell in a handbasket, with rodgers injury!! and so many other teams that do not have a hq qb at all.. dang right this is a brilliant move by the falcons
@@9babygaming Yeah, could have gotten him lower and additional draft picks but it's only about it being done by the Falcons. Can't seem to remember when Green Bay took a QB further down and were trashed for it. It was a dumb move, you now have a large amount of the cap invested in QBs. Atlanta drafted a player with injury issues that they knew would be available at their draft spot when they signed Cousins. Cowherd is the only retard that would think this isn't a dumb move but Falcons fans need some copium.
@@lebarriomonagan4636 exactly bro , every time we make a move especially something that’s gonna benefit us in the long run. We get backlash. The media doesn’t want any Atlanta sports team to succeed.
@@9babygaming pure hate! Green Bay did it , & chiefs did it. Yes we gave a lot of money to Kirk but it’s not about the money. It’s about what gives us the best chance to win. & now we are setup to succeed now & in the future & the media hates it.
Cousins has been a mid level QB his whole career. He may well exceed expectations and take them to the promised land in the next two seasons but he is more likely to land the stats on his way to 10-7 and 9-8 and they have to move on. With Penix they don’t have to trade the farm to do something crazy to get a washed up disgruntled vet or an over hyped rookie that you really aren’t sure about.
Thank you Colin 👍. I thought exactly what you said on draft night. It's the most important position in the game. All people talk about all season is if you don't have a good QB your not going anywhere.
That's what I was thinking about, too. They get their guy early this year instead of next year because the league may take some picks away from them, you get the QB of the future now because it's not guaranteed if you get the QB next year pending on the punishment the league hands down. Great point.
@@devonstandifer1429 Or if you have a winning record.. You wouldn't have a top pick either- coupled with the League penalizing the Falcons and taking picks
@tevonhennesy6110 So true, you would owe him 50 million against the cap. Didn't we learn this with M. Ryan or even see with Russell Wilson with Denver paying unheard of $$ to leave.
Wow Colin my words exactly all of it is my perspective to the crew on 92.9 the game in the ATL who has been dragging this decision except one personality Jamie Dukes
What really gets me is all the "experts" who talk about Penix like he's eligible for membership in AARP. Penix is 23, about to turn 24. Yes, above the median age for NFL rookies, but he's not that much older. I believe Penix was the right choice. Reportedly, Cousins is not all that butt-hurt about the Penix pick. Why should he be? Cousins is going to get a boatload of money, be the Falcons' starter for probably the next two seasons, and have his chance to win a super bowl. Cousins will be 36 come August; unless he's divorced from reality, he had to know this gig wasn't likely to last longer than two seasons, despite the "four years contract".
As FALCONS fan he gets it Cousin shouldn’t feel no way.. he won’t be here in 6 years plus what he thought he wouldn’t have to compete 😂 no exceptions on this team everybody has to compete no option
This the best position a young qb has been put in, maybe ever… he can sit and learn from Kirk who has thrown for over 4,000 yards many times, and take over when he is done… year three starting would be amazing, Penix hit the lottery
Penix learning curve gets shorten playing behind Kirk since this system is familiar to him. They both push the ball down field extremely well. If Cousins go down we shouldn't miss a beat. Plus the edge rusher everyone had us slotted to get didn't come off the board until pick 15. I'm a Falcons Fan was initially shocked but approve of the move. Especially after the shit shows we encountered after Matt departed.
I agree Colin, although I would loved to have seen Brock bowers and Pitts on the field together, but it was a smart move by the falcons to get your guy just incase the cousins project don't work out, it's a old school approach, fans are just spoiled now because so many qb's get drafted a thrown in the fire but this was always the process.
ive never agreed with colin... and i watched this video thinking i was gong to disagree. this dude spit facts and now i am on board on the penix train. i was a salty faclon fan day one of the draft but colin made me change m,y mind. DAMN
As a falcons fan, I’m happy either way with it. We would’ve been one more ankle twist away from starting Ridder again and I think that would be traumatic for the fan base
Here's the difference: top 10 picks are extremely valuable. That's where you find impact players that transform a franchise. They missed on that opportunity to essentially draft a QB with a mindset of "sit for 2 or 3 years". Yes, green bay did that with rodgers, but they did it at pick 24. Pick 8 has almost 3 times more value according to the chart.
Good move by Atlanta to draft Penix, and achilles injuries are hard to predict, so Atlanta protected their future with this pick. And if Cousins is butthurt by this selection, hey Kirk, all is fair in love and football.
I thought the Falcons should have drafted Dallas Turner. The last time the Falcons drafted a quarterback when I thought they should have drafted a defensive player they drafted Matt Ryan and we all know how that turned out. Hopefully, I'm wrong again.
Collin I don’t always agree with you but you are spot on you strike when the fire is hot it was a no brainer you cannot put your future into a 36 year old quarterback the Falcons are not one player away from the superbowl they made the right decision
Hardcore Georgia and Falcons fan, I love Penix but if we were gonna draft him why didn’t we get a fire edge or cb in free agency and start Penix? I love Kirk too though, I’m not mad at Atlanta like some ppl, we could look like GENUISES if Kirk goes down and or Jr balls out when he gets his shot
I think mina kimes viewpoint is spot on. This picm doesnt make sense because if you feel like youre not going to draft high with kirk behind the helm you should have drafted to win now. Its bizarre regardless of if its a good pick or not.
I knew Colin would get it. I got it. Yes they paid a lot for Kirk. However with the Ruke pic and the LB out of Washington we straight. Cause we won't resign AJ and we won't resign Grady.
Remember Matt Ryan was 37 years old when he signed with the colts Kirk cousins is going to be 36 this year. His decline had already started. I guess you could say the fault was signing that quarterback to that much money but that's the asking price for a quarterback these days that starts around 50 million. I suppose they could have signed someone like Ryan tannehill. Or Sam darnold or Andy Dalton. But the fans would have been pissed and there was no guarantee that Penix was necessarily going to still be available at the 8th pick. How pissed would Atlanta you be if they signed Andy Dalton and then had to draft bo nix at pick 8.
Nobody is confused about them having an insurance policy for the future, but it can possibly be an expensive gamble. Because like the other guy said I, what if Penix starts and Cousins never gets his job back? Now you have the most expensive backup in the league.
The only way Phenix starts is if Cousins can't, due to injury. So, they would be without Cousins anyway in that situation. Cousins money is front loaded to the first 18 months and the majority the first year. If Cousin's plays like Cousins the first year, good but not great, and next year they want to start Penix they can trade Cousins. He will have value. Last but not least, look at how much dead cap hit Denver took getting rid of Wilson. After year one Cousins isn't close to that. Does it sting? Sure. But if Penix is good it's worth it. If he's not, then it wasn't.
That backup Josh Dobbs beat the Falcons after being the team 4 days. He had to learn the plays in the huddle. Atlanta has moee problems than backup QB.
Most important position in sports. Falcons double down and virtually said, "we're all in on QB"... and what's the problem again? QB insurance and succession plan all solved in one day. Falcons fans should be FIRED UP!
And we gonna lose draft picks from Kirk running his mouth dont know how many and if you dont get a top ten pick in 2 years we'll be looking like 22-23. 1 defensive player cant win a game but a qb can
When I saw this pick, the first thing I thought of was the Jets. The Jets went out and got Aaron Rodgers at age 38 or 39, and they were talking playoffs and some even Super Bowl lol. And on the first play of the season, their season was over because A Rod went down and they didn't plan for a backup. Yes they had Zach Wilson but literally the season before they were trying to figure out ways not play him lol. Now look at the Falcons and Kirk, proven vet, up there in age, coming off an injury, why wouldn't they pick a sure backup and obvious future starter in that position. And God forbid Kirk gets injured again, there's no drop off in production at QB.
Could’ve got Sam darnold then drafted penix saves at least 100-180 million have him sit for a year and you get penix starting after a yr and u can get a fairly high to mid draft pick next yr which u add a wr is something to help him
I agree with the pick but Rodgers had a down season (for him a down season) the year before they got Love. They believe Penix can be elite and they can draft him, do it.
Nobody knows whether this pick is going to make sense until it does/doesn't. Funny thing is Cousins was the second QB chosen when RGIII was drafted above him. Cousins is a bit too old to be seen as a long term solution. Plus next years QBs aren't as hyped/highly graded. So, I get it.
