The Lord Ruler was very much of Preservation. He tried to keep things the way they were, no matter the cost. This is an example of how NONE of the shards are good in extremes.
Ironically, I like to think that the Lord Ruler is a great example of the Ruin in Preservation, as his desire to maintain the world as it was after his foolish mistakes, ridiculous biases, and monumental compromises to concept integrity itself was its absolute demise. He is an example of how preserving the world and saving it is completely different.
My brother and I were reading HoA at the same time. This was my first Sanderson series, and I readily accepted his bet that Elend and Vin wouldn't make it, believing that surely no author would dare to kill off two main characters. Oh, how naive I was.
SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING: The pre chapters are voiced by Spook's voice actor and not Vin's because Vin never got to read Sazed's notes. So in reality in the graphic audios we have been listening to our characters read Alendi's journal, the wall text and Sazed's notes. I don't understand why this can spoil the Hero's true identity because when I was first reading the books while listening to the graphic audio I thought Vin wasn't reading the pre chapters because she was the one who wrote them. So I personally got extra bamboozled by Brandon Sanderson
That was a very smart assumption though! SPOILER /!\ . . . It's that one line about being the Hero + Sazed's voice that I recognized that had me worried this could be a potential spoiler for first time readers. But you're absolutely right, he could've been reading another person's words much like they did with Alendi's logbook. I realize now that I didn't think of that possibility because I already knew for certain that he was the Hero :)
Exactly! A loose end I was not very happy about! And Yomen and Elend never really got to chill and have awesome socio-political and economic debates during peace times and become bros… and Vin and Elend never got to… (tears) enjoy the world they helped create and have children 😭 And we never got to see Cett and Yomen make peace or Cett and Breeze like make up… idk
What a lovely video! I just wanna say something you probably know already, but there are theories that Elend knew what he was doing and let marsh cut his head off. he was burning atium and duraluminium and he might have really been seeing very far into the future, and realized that if he died then vin would sacrifice herself, and then sazed happened and everyone would be happy. Idk it makes me feel better about their death.
Omg, I did NOT know that! 😮 Interesting theory, for sure. I never thought about it but I'm guessing it's totally possible -- and I, too, feel somewhat better now I know about it. I'll just consider it canon 😆
@@KayaReads I was curious because I remember this being heavily implied to the point of being near guaranteed canon. Here's a couple of lines "Then, Elend burned duralumin with his atium. Sight, Sound, Strength, Power, Glory, Speed! Blue lines sprayed from his chest like rays of light. But those were all overshadowed by one thing. Atium plus duralumin. In a flash of knowledge, Elend felt a mind- numbing wealth of information. All became white around him as knowledge saturated his mind. "I see now," he whispered as the vision faded, and along with it his remaining metals. The battlefield returned. He stood upon it, his sword piercing Marsh's neck. It had gotten caught on the spikehead jutting out of Marsh's back, between the shoulder blades. Marsh's axe was buried in Elend's chest." This is a really curious passage. He burns up all his metals, and the best he can do is strike the Inquisitor and get his sword stuck? This is the STRONGEST mistborn in centuries, born of Lerasium, seeing the future along with the agility to use it well. It doesn't make much sense for him to take a losing exchange like this. After this, he lives for a bit on phantom metals but says "pewter can only do so much". Everything he does oozes the triumphant pride of a king, free of worry, rather than making any move to try to win. Its easy to make an argument, then, that he would like to have died on the first stroke, but the blow simply flew incorrectly. Maybe he just wanted to die fighting. Regardless, he took a blow that should kill him and was kept alive only by Vin's phantom metals. In essence, then, he needed to take the decisive head blow to set her free from the burden of trying to keep him and herself alive. When I read the passage with that mindset, it all just makes sense.
Marsh is one of my favorite characters in all of the Mistborn so much. I relate alot to hurting everyone I love while enjoying it while at the same time desperately wanting in my heart of hearts to be better. Much like Marsh, I got better, but still holy shit Marsh I want to hug you.
The Lord Ruler was heavily influenced by Ruin through his hemalurgical spikes. The Final empire used to be a lot less terrible before Ruin got his claws properly in him. As for why Rashek thought it was a good idea to put hemalurgical spikes in himself depsite clearly knowing of the risks as shown by how he kept his atrium secret from the inquisitors, I don't really know.
And the channel finally comes around full circle, after first a review of well of ascension, and 2 years later we are here now, very cool Do hope you eventually get around to Wax and Wayne, some people stop after era 1, but I feel out they are missing out on a lot by ignoring it as just “that side-series”
And the journey goes on! 😁 I like Era 2 very much! It took some getting used to, but I ended up enjoying the shooty-shooty, whacky-whacky gang 😂 No worries, I WILL re-read Era 2 and review it before I get to The Lost Metal :D
@@KayaReads Have you read Secret History? There's some debate over whether it's best to read it after Bands of Mourning or between Era 1 and Era 2, but you definitely should read it before The Lost Metal.

I didn't care as much for the Mistborn series than I wanted to... until I hit this book! Now I love everyone so much more in hindsight. Just how everything came together so smoothly... I loved it!

Oh I read Era 2 a while back! Right after finishing Era 1 the first time around. It DID feel weird at first, as it's very different! But I eventually learned to appreciate it. It has its own charm :) I'm saving TLM for after I finish certain other books in the cosmere, for investigative purposes :D

You forget one thing about rashek, he eventually stopped feeling like a human, and more like a robot. He was nearly pure logic and about 00.006739% emotion. So he didnt understand what the skaa felt, he thought of them more like a robot from bost--- I mean Luthadel dynamics.
I guess so. It probably was easier for him to just turn off that humanity of his rather than trying to find a sustainable way of protecting the Empire without relying on slavery (yes, I still hate him 😂)
@@KayaReads I also think sanderson intended for you to keep hating him, eventhough you start understanding him later on, and feel a bit of sympathy, but not enough to overpower hate.

Im pretty sure it was fairly obvious who the hero was by that point no matter how you read the book as the hero has some very specific phrases he uses throughout the whole era.

It’s okay the normal audiobook spoils the ending too lol, Mr. Kramer uses his Sazed voice for each chapter intro. But I got spoiled for who the Hero of Ages was because I read all of Stormlight before Mistborn
26:38 glad to know I aint the only one who missed their bus stop while reading and had to walk for 20 minutes. Now I take extra care while reading at a bus if it isnt the last stop But my pain didnt end there, I also had to go down 7 stories worth of stairs. Not escalators, STAIRS.
I don’t think you mentioned Demoux at all in this video, which makes sense as he is a rather minor character. But it’s a good a time as any to point out he appears (along with two other existing Cosmere characters) in the first interlude in WoK. I think that scene might have been the first interseries crossover characters other than Hoid. Also I think in more recent editions of HoA Slowswift uses the word spren. Plus the crossover of canned food in HoA that was followed up on in OB. Or Ati being mentioned in the OB epigraphs by Edgli. The Coppermind is truly a rabbithole of information. #TheresAlwaysAnotherSecret
Whoa! I kinda heard Demoux was a worldhopper, but I never spotted him. Slowswift talking about spren is kinda wild. I'm pretty sure he didn't in the Graphic Audio book; I would've noticed. But wait, what does that mean? Slowswift is a worldhopper? He's acquainted with worldhoppers? Didn't notice the rest either, especially Ati! :o How did I even manage to miss that?! Oh gosh thank goodness I don't go to the Coppermind (because of spoilers) otherwise I'd go insane XD
I know it will take awhile but I'm curious about your thoughts on The Lost Metal because there is so much cosmere stuff that at times it may be a bit confusing. Also I find that when you are confused about something it may be the best part of your videos.
I was advised to read pretty much the whole cosmere (especially ROW) before getting to TLM because of cameos, clues, connections, all that. So yeah, it will take a while before I get there. But no worries. Detective Kaya is always on the case! 🕵🏽♀️
@@KayaReadsHonestly Elantris is also fairly important for Lost Metal, but you might want to read it before RoW anyway (along with certain stories in Arcanum Unbounded, which is actually my favorite Cosmere work). I can’t remember how much Cosmere stuff in Stormlight you got the first time around, but the whole concept of reading order is getting out of whack anyway as the Cosmere grows more complicated.
Great Video! So fun seeing opposing opinions to my own (Spooks storyline didn't grip me and Sazed brought the mood down for me). Just wondering though, but have you not read mistborn a secret history? Don't research the book, the back of the book literally states "the existence of this book is a spoiler", but you talk like you haven't read it and I'm not sure if that's the case or you don't want to give anything away. Read after the 3rd era 2 book btw...

I find that trilogy hilarious. People will refuse to read narnia to their kids because of the overt religious allegory, but will happily praise mistborn. A trilogy that is literally mormon theology. It kind of made the whole thing sour for me. If were going to boycott things, lets at least be consistent. Also, it doesn't remove the fact that they are good stories.
What? Im assuming your talking about the whole important words printed on metal plates thing but those are literally the only similarity and aren't even a solid connection because the terris prophecies were prophecies not histories and were carved on steel not gold.
