Villavicencio, Colombia: In January I went to my most favourite country again, this time for a special mission. I saw an old documentary about the airport of Villavicencio and how the still fly with this more than 80 years old Douglas DC-3 airplanes to the Amazon rainforest to supply the local communities with food and goods. It was really hard to find information about the actual situation and if they are still flying. I wasn´t sure until I arrived at the airport (walking and asking people for hours). There was just one piston engine DC-3 flying in Colombia at that moment and that one was under maintenance. But I was lucky, one the last day of my trip I could join them for one day. It was an unforgettable adventure and one of the best travel experiences I made so far. I've loved this plane and the story behind it since I saw the first series of Ice Pilots.
The pilots told me that a DC-3 can only be replaced by another DC-3. There is still no aircraft that can replace the DC-3 in this form. The inhabitants of the Amazon depend on this aircraft. It is still "economical", has a very high payload, capacity for up to 35 people, can land on unpaved runways like gravel, grass, mud and sand. It had a very short takeoff and landing distance and almost indestructible.
Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go into the villages to film the people and cultures. We always had only 15 minutes until we took off again and the DC-3 lands there only about every two weeks. So I have to go there again :D.
In the video I said that we are flying to 3 remote villages, they were only two, was my mistake sorry.
The two places are: Cumaribo and Barranco Minas
I wasnt´t able to film the landing into Cumaribo because the battery of the Gopro died and I was sitting in the front without window.
