This evening, just a couple of hours ago, I caught train 6C52, the 1619 Heysham Harbour P.S. to Sellafield B.N.F., as it passed through Grange-over-Sands almost an hour early.
About once a fortnight the train winds its way along the Cumbrian Coast and Furness Lines to EDF's Heysham Power Station, where it collects spent nuclear fuel for reprocessing, before trundling back to Sellafield in the opposite direction.
From our vantage point at Grange-over-Sands we can see Heysham Power Station just over 10 miles away above the shimmering sands of Morecambe Bay. However, the same distance by rail is almost twice as much.
The train consisted of Direct Rail Services' locomotive 68007 "Valiant", two loaded FNA nuclear flask wagons, with DRS's 66004 "Rapid" bringing up the rear.
The driver sounded the horn and offered a cheery wave at the Grange-over-Sands signaller and returned my wave the train passed by.
I am in this area for a few more days, so will hopefully catch the nuclear flasks again sometime.
