Obviously we don’t live in an apartment, but I know of people who do and have them.. and they say they’re great. We originally started considering them because we lived in an apartment a few years ago. They’re such easy dogs! (Complete weirdos too 😂)

Our grey boy sleeps more than our cats. The only thing with an apartment is to consider if your grey knows how to do stairs or not (ours did not. 5 months later he can ALMOST go up on his own....) just a thing to think about. They are weird and super lovey dogs though.

Good point! We got pet insurance which should cover a lot of it, but older dogs can be harder to insure if you don't have a pup.

@@ElainePower The only thing wrong with pet insurance in South Australia ( it could be Australia wide but I don't know ) is you still need to pay for the treatment first then you claim for it back. So if you get it because you don't have much money it's not any good.

@@ElainePower Thank you, we are all enjoying each others company. Now progressed to going on the bus and tram and not frightened of city traffic any more. He's so excited first thing in the morning and it's easy for him to hurt himself on our furniture, dashing around. We now have mini-strategy to keep him calm and get outdoors on our run/walk quickly. Kasha is energetic - we go jogging and running with him most days.

We had a 8m retractable lead for our greyhound worked fine. You just have to use a harness first. Once your doggy is use to walking with you, the 8 m worked well you can lock them so you can give them as much freedom as you want. It's just a little more controlled freedom for them.

Great video that covers many costs that people don't think of, that can mount up. The one cost I don't think you covered is the cost of getting a dog in the first place! I know rescue agencies sometimes receive the criticisms like "What? £200 for a dog no-one else wants?", so a brief coverage of this would help people understand why a rescue dog isn't (usually) free!
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 4 года назад
Yes, very true. We paid a rehoming fee to the charity to help cover the cost of neutering and care of Frank before we had him. I think it’s a great idea to have some sort of fee, so that people really understand the commitment of buying a dog.

@@ElainePower Totally agree. I recently lost my Irish bred Greyhound to old age: she made it just past her 15th birthday which is quite extraordinary. The thing is when they get past ten the insurance shoots up in price, by her 14th year it had reached £76 (about 86 Euro) a month. By the summer of 2022 (with the energy crisis and inflation) the annual cost of maintaining her was up around the £3,000 (3,400 Euro) mark. Not that I begrudged her a penny of it. Did the insurance pay for all the veterinary treatment? Nope. The excesses were set to just a little more than the normal veterinary maintenance and minor injury fees, but it did pay for serious injuries (3) and certain long term illnesses (digestive system) and also teeth extractions but only because the gums had become badly infected. I think the thing you have to ask yourself is, if instead of insurance you put some money aside, how certain are you that you won't be touching it for a family crisis that comes out of nowhere?

Thanks you for the lovely video Elaine👏 This is our first week with our greyhound Hermes. I already spent so much money but i don't mind, as you said the initial starter kit is the biggest amount. Hermes came with a collar, lead, muzzle (its the law here to put them on) and a fleece coat from the rescue. Luckily Hermes loves his bed, i bought him the most expensive one. But our old dog Zeus (Rottie) chewed on all his beds to destruction and ended up sleeping on the carpet, so i agree to buy a cheaper one at first. Hermes is not interested in any toys, maybe still settling in to his retired life. Today i bought him a blue bone shaped ID collar with his name and our numbers. Also bought him a car harness, doggie wipes and doggie life jacket. Here in Perth, AU it is getting warm, and i wanna try to get him to swim tomorrow with his new LJ, can't wait to see his reaction to the water :) I am also thinking of getting a ramp to help him to climb into the car, our cars are too high, he struggles going up. And maybe a back seat hammock.
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 4 года назад
The start up costs are so much!! But once you have them, you’ll have them for life. A ramp would be a good idea.. he might start to jump in himself when he’s a bit more confident? Our bed is super high.. and it took frank awhile to realise he could jump up on it. Now he bounds in and up onto it! Frank also didn’t play with toys for months! I can’t remember how long... but he had a box full and just wasn’t interested. Now he loves toys (when it suits him) 😊😊

Thanks for this. We adopted a lurcher last Sunday and it's interesting to hear another approach. Not that there's anything to quibble with! Instead of insurance, we opted for an in-house monthly £15 to our vet for any maintenance and health costs in the future. That includes nail clipping, injections, ear care, a large discount on teeth work ( Ronan needs two out!) and so on. Oh, the joy of having a dog again. Our beautiful dog, Lupin died in February. She was fifteen and a half years old, and had clearly reached the end of her happy life. It was difficult to consider another pupper, but after time elapsed, and the absence of a dog in the house became unbearable I plucked up the courage to actually apply for one of the many dogs I'd looked at. He's such a beautiful stripy tiger with the kindest heart and soft- eyed look belying a good streak of mischief and good humour. Well, enough. From one happy dog owner to another, thank you.
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 5 лет назад
So sorry to hear about Lupin, but it’s great that you’ve rescued another doggo! Is the dog’s name Ronan? Also that’s a great scheme with the vet. I don’t think we have that here. Just insurance. Hope you’re having a great time with your new arrival!

Great video Elaine! Another additional cost for me has been hiring a secure field 3 x a week (£5 each visit) as my dog is a Lurcher & has terrible recall with any distractions so to let him have some off lead time I’m happy to pay this as it allows him to have a safe & enjoyable run around Frank is so lucky to have such a kind & caring home keep up the wonderful work!

Okay, the UK has a lot more greyhound supply stores online than the US, judging by the sites I keep finding. I'm thinking of getting a greyhound as a Emotional Support Animal or, ideally, a psychiatric service dog. But as a non-working university student, my budget is severely limited. That's a huge concern. I'm considering feeding raw or homemade instead of dry food. It's supposed to be cheaper and healthier, especially if you go to the butcher. Growing up with dogs all my life, I've found pet first aid kits to come in handy on multiple occasions.
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 4 года назад
Greyhounds are such great dogs.. and can be quite low maintenance (after the initial few weeks settling them in). I never thought of the first aid kit actually, really good idea. We’re also thinking of doing doggy first aid too! Frank tripped on his paw at the weekend and let out the greyhound scream of death (he was 100% fine) but I realised that if he had been injured I wouldn’t have known what to do!

An expected cost for me, but I’m sure most people would forget about teeth cleaning. By the age of about three or four most dogs should be getting their teeth cleaned by a vet. I adopted my dog when she was almost seven, so she needed a full dental. She will probably need one every couple of years due to her breed if she is to keep any of her teeth. A somewhat unexpected cost for me was food trial and error. The girl is very picky and goes through phases of liking a food, then refusing it completely. I was unsuccessful getting her to eat kibble, so now she eats only canned and dehydrated raw. It’s a rather expensive diet and so I’m glad she’s not a big dog. 😅
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 4 года назад
Yes! 100%! Totally forgot to include that cost in the video. We got Frank’s teeth cleaned for the first time in January and it was about €150. He had huge plaque build up since before we had him.. but we do brush his teeth regularly and give him chews to clean them.. so hopefully we won’t have to get them done too regularly!

Ah, the cost. I would add to my note under your more recent update that our back garden, which had a 4-foot metal mesh fence, which clearly was not adequate. We invested in a $6,000 six-foot high white vinyl fence, which sounds far less pleasant than it actually is. Gulp. But it did transform the garden, and I'm very glad we did it. The adoption agency with which we dealt -- whose pre-adoption checks were essentially like joining the CIA -- provided a Martingale collar and a harness and lead, and we bought pajamas and a light outdoor coat and a quilted outdoor coat and, lord 'elp me, booties she has not yet tolerated... Evie has an upstairs bed and a downstairs bed, but I think she needs (now we're both working at home) another bed to alternate between our studies. But as I imagine you'll agree, none of these expenses amount to anything when set against the joy of living with a wonderful greyhound.
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 4 года назад
Actually..... we also spent a silly amount on getting our garden up to scratch 😂 it was overgrown and not fenced in.. but Frank wasn’t the only reason we did that.. we just wanted a lovely garden! Hey this was a really well-done video! I just have seen online that greyhounds need 22-27 percent protein. Not the less than 20 percent you recommend
@ElainePower
@ElainePower 4 года назад
Thank you! And thanks for watching! From my research, reading and experience speaking to other greyhound owners in or around 20% is optimum for non-"working" greyhounds. When dogs are racing or coursing they would have been on 28%+ protein to give them the energy required, but if your hound is going to spend it's life lying on the couch with only one or two walks a day higher protein can make them quite hyperactive. Having said I'm not an expert and I know that every dog is different. Some people also may feed slightly higher protein, but balance the meal out with raw meat or other ingredients.. some feed fully raw... other feed them on cooked whole foods. With Frank, we had him on a 18.5% protein "highly digestible" kibble and it was too low for him - he was lethargic and lost weight. His current food is 20% protein, which is suiting him great.. his coat is glossy, his energy levels are high and he's a very happy boy... but even with that, we tried him on a different flavour of the same brand (also 20%) and it upset his tummy. If you're planning to get a doggo, definitely ask the rescue organisation and get advice from them! There can be a lot of trial and error in food for greys (lots of graphic poop conversations), so if anyone else is reading this and wants to chime in please do!

Elaine Power thank you for replying so fast! I actually have a 8 week greyhound puppy. I haven’t heard the working vs. non-working protein requirements before, but it makes a lot of sense. I’ve been feeding my guy the nutro puppy formula of chicken rice and sweet potato because I was under the impression that higher is better. I’ll definitely have a talk with my vet on the next visit and see what she recommends. It sounds like you know what you’re talking about though 👍

@@haydengreer9969 A greyhound puppy!! OMG... I've never met a greyhound puppy. My heart aches at the thought of a puppy version of Frank 😭 I also have no idea if puppy nutrition is different... because Frank was 3 when we adopted him, so definitely check with your vet. There's also a lot of resources online written by global adoption groups which can be super helpful. We got two books by an Irish author called Mary Fox all about greyhound care (which addresses food) and we found it very helpful.

I am from Manchester,England and I am thinking of getting a greyhound one day as I have heard they make great pets and companions. I hear that retired racing greyhounds are great to adopt.Anywhere you can recommend to look at?

I’m not sure what charities are in your area but I would look for a greyhound specific charity for sure! They tend to know the individual dogs temperaments very well and can give excellent advice.

This video was extremely helpful as I’m adopting a big ex coursing greyhound named Bear soon! Thank you

Amazing!! Greyhounds are just the best! Do you know much about Bear’s history? Frank was pretty bad at coursing, which saved his life in the end.. now he lives a life of naps and cuddles!
@erinoconnor8941
@erinoconnor8941 4 года назад
Elaine Power he’s only 3, so I’d imagine he wasn’t great at coursing either! He’ll have plenty of room on the sofa to sleep now that he’s retired!

Ah yeah! Frank was just 3 when we got him.. so probably a similar story for yours. Bear will be living his best life in no time 🥰 congrats!

@@erinoconnor8941 I did have two 11 yr old girl grey's litter sisters they had very different personalities one was a gray and white she was a funny dog that would make us laugh, 9 out of 10 times when she stood and stretched she would fart lol unfortunately we lost her, the other one is black and white she does nothing wrong, never plays with toys, she is very serious and grumpy she was always growling at her sister or me and my son if we are doing something she doesn't like - like patting her when she doesn't want to be patted so I cant get another grey but I still love her she is very consistent.

Angels do not enter a house with a dog or a portrayal. Nor do they accompany those who have a bell or a dog.

Thanks for watching! Our house is cold at night, so the pjs are essential in winter for our specific circumstances. Plus it’s lovely to support small local businesses.

@@ElainePower quite agree about the jimjams if you have a cold house. I used to winter in Europe with my last greyhound in my campervan. PJs definitely needed in the Pyrenees! Not that they stopped her from sneaking under my duvet as well. Then of course she'd get too hot and rearrange the bed to suit her.

I have been known to get up in the middle of the night to recover Frank with his blanket and tuck him back in 😂😂 the PJs are actually super handy for helping the blankets stay on him, so he’s quieter throughout the night 🥰
