What's so brilliant about Duff, in my opinion, is that he has such a badass punk attitude in his playing, but at the same time he is very melodic and really dynamic and musically tasteful. He's like a mix of Dee Dee Ramone, Paul McCartney and Chris Squire or something.

You touched a lot on Duff's bass lines, but he is the master of the fill. There are songs where the only person doing any fills is Duff; no guitar, no drums, just bass fills. Not a lot of other bands that will say "Let the bass player cover all of our blank spaces."

Yep. I saw GnR in Pittsburgh back in July of 2016. We didn't have the best seats, but Duff was playing a white PJ Bass with a logo on it. I took a few pics, zoomed in but still couldn't see what it was. Finally, they put a full shot of Duff on the big screens - it was a Purple Prince symbol. I used to lump G&R in with all the other hair metal cock rock outfits. Then, after playing for ten or so years, I started to notice that they were WAY more than that while overhearing them on the radio on jobs, and then I listened to Countdown to Destruction and the Use Your Illusions and was flabbergasted that I hadn't been impressed before. He's a FANTASTIC musician, as are the rest of them. I have two JB specials, an '85 fretted and an '88 (one of the last ever built in the factory) fretted. All their guts have been put in Warmoth Dinky J bodies (I don't like the look or balance of a P body shape, but the pickups are in exactly the same harmonic positions and sound indistinguishable from the OGs), and they're two of my favorite basses among a few genuinely AMAZING instruments, they just... DO STUFF. There was serious mojo in those '80s Japanese Fenders. I gave the bodies away to people in need on talkbass that had good JB Special necks but crappy bodies, so no one crucify me. I'm also an absolute G-K devotee, I almost ALWAYS play EVERYTHING through one of my G-Ks (an old 800 and 4x10", an MB210 combo, and a Legacy 212 combo). They do everything I ever want them to and they're VERY intuitive for me to get what I want from.

I remember it very well because I was in L.A. a lot at that time. As brilliant as "Appetite for Desctruction" is, the record didn't really take off at the beginning. But then MTV put the video for “Welcome to the jungle” in heavy rotation and that’s how the album finally took off. And as they say, the rest is history.

This video blew my mind. I honestly haven't really listened to GNR since my teenage years, but back in 92 I had both Use Your Illusions memorized. Yet as an ignorant teen, I was all about the lyrics and Slash's lead. I never really clued in to how much the base drives the music. There are a lot of riffs that I remembered as lead guitar lines which are in fact base lines. Wild! And yes, I knew You Could Be Mine backwards and forwards thanks to T2. That video ran in endless repeat on MTV where Arnie stalks the band, but then lets them go because he judges them to be a "Waste of Ammo." Good times!

I'm not a bassist (I'm a guitarist, actually) but I've always loved Duff's tone: not particularly distorted but punchy, smoothed out by a bit of chorus....so tasteful.

The Tone control on the Jazz Bass Special is a boost/cut with a decent in the middle. In the detention position the pickups are essentially direct.

Underrated bass tone and driveline. With Slash carving it up and very high on the treble side, Duff layed down such a robust and punchy bass line that allowed Slash to riff. Changing from Adler to Sorum further enhanced Duff’s tone and punch. I think Matt Sorum had the kit and ability to take Duff’s bass lines to the next level.

Izzy’s driving saucy rhythm in the appetite album was also a key part of the band’s sound. Go check out the covers of rocket queen and welcome to the jungle on only Izzy’s parts. Perfect match with duff’s bass, giving that soul and heart beat to their top hits.

I've got a Burgundy Mist 1985 Fender Jazz Special that i purchased back in 85. I was 14 teen at the time and i replaced the original pickups with Seymour Duncan quarter pound shortly after i got the bass. In Fact i use Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound on most of my bass guitars to this day. 💥❤️‍🔥🎸

That 1985 fender jazz is sweet!!! Im sure that In a old interview Duff talked about his original fender having a had a misshaped neck. Style wise Duff brought the Punk attitude bang into the rock with his playing, It's so much more thought out than you first realise and his ghost noting is essential to that duff sound 'Mr Brownstone" is a very good example of that. Additionally he used to play drums and this has led his bass fills to be like that of drum fills, Sweet child is a good example of this. Overall it's the attitude that duff brings to GnR and he deserves way much more credit than he got!

i remember Slash saying in an interview that the rift from sweet child of mine , was his actual finger stretch before starting a session, and that's how the song was born, i can't pinpoint the exact interview because it's probably more then 2 decades older by now and i can't remember for the life of me where i saw or read it, but that's for the internte's heroes to fact check me.

I have an original Duff bass and it has a Seymour Duncan pickup in the bridge location. That was what made a Jazz Bass Special, the jazz pickup was different. These were some of his best songs, but really all of them are great. I remember the day the T2 video came out me and 4 friends were on hold with Ticketmaster waiting to get tickets to their concert. The day of the concert was the day UYI came out. I believe Coma was one of his best bass lines, I remember hearing it for the first time and was blown away. He was the reason I left the drums and picked up the bass.

Duff is one of the bass players that inspired me to play. I always loved his upfront and gritty tone. Side note: Bass Player Mag used to be SO snobby back in the day. They pissed on anyone that wasn't playing jazz, funk, blues, or whatever the "approved" forms of music were. I remember reading it as a kid and frequently getting angry at how elitist it was.

I was a senior in HS when “appetite” came out. I was not a hair metal guy. It seems like one minute we were listening to bands like Crue, and Ratt, Dokken(I hate Dokken, ughhh) and then it was GnR, and Jane’s addiction (giving us a preview of the 90’s heavy rock scene). Pre 1990 the choices were southern rock, hair metal and this new, weird heroin driven sound. Heavier and darker, we still listened to them at parties, but the themes were more realistic than idealized (think Motley Crue’s kind of lyrics with their actual tragic lives). This was a much more realistic, unglamorous view of their world.

I remember learning Duff’s bass lines back to back when I was starting to learn bass back in he day. The bass riffs and fills on appetite are great. There’s always cool little fills going on in there that you can take and apply pretty much anywhere. It’s simple but effective.

Scott's bit about how "everyone has a part" is how I always explain why GNR is my favorite band. It's orchestral the way they each do their own thing and it collectively builds into something even better than its awesome parts. The way their composed their songs is just fantastic.

So good, thanks for another great video SBL! When I was a young kid, II bought Appetite For Destruction and also felt like I shouldn't be listening. I remember listening to the whole album in one sitting on my walkman headphones and loving it. I was always drawn to Duff and his vibe, where all my buddies liked Slash, and the girls like Axl,. I had a poster of the band and I thought Duff was the coolest. Now decades later as I'm learning the bass, my 12 year old self is validated. Duff was such a monstrous driving force in the band. I still look up to him.

I have a 1987 jazz bass special bronze, which got a green-ish glow now due to ageing. Got it for cheap as the 5th owner, since one of the previous owners put a humbucker pickup at the neck. Got the humbucker removed and a black pickguard placed over the hole. Looks amazing together with the black neck and hardware! My second bass ever and I think I'm keeping it for life.

I used to have a 1987 Jazz Bass Special in charcoal I bought it on eBay in 1999. I didn't play it much and sold it ten years ago when I needed money. It was great but I only played it a few times. Now I bought a 1998 Fender Japan 70s reissue and am into bass. When I owned the Special I was not into bass but now I am a beginner bass player. I miss the Special though and wish I had kept it.
