From its early settlement by miners and ranchers to its spiritual attraction for members of midcentury countercultural movements, Joshua Tree has been drawing people to its otherworldly desert landscape for generations. But among the towering rock formations and vast backcountry is a patchwork of private homesteads, known as inholdings, that remain mostly hidden from the 3 million visitors that come to the park each year.
