"Obscure law" It's the law that allows our entire industry to function, it's well known as far as people know about legislation. Also, the reason the Jones Acts makes things more expensive is that it's effectively a non-compete bill, companies are not allowed to outsource US sailing jobs to other countries who already pay their workers like crap, US sailors such as myself are among the best paid in the world. It's similar to certain other bills saying that US buildings have to use a certain amount of metal that was mined and shaped here in the US, other countries can do it cheaper because they lack the safety and environmental regulations that we have, but we still need jobs in the US so protecting them with bills like the Jones Act keeps these jobs where they should be: at home.
