Mexico was one of only five countries that refused to recognize Italy's annexation of Ethiopia. Mexican support for an independent Ethiopia was a key event in Ethiopia-Mexico relations.

A little something about the names: First, the area you called “Mexico” - it’s actual name is “Mexico Adebabay” (Mexico Square) in English. If I am not mistaken, the other places you named after countries perhaps are areas close to their diplomatic embassies, or their chanceries (residence areas of the foreign diplomats). The reason why Mexico got it’s own square has its roots in the diplomatic struggle Ethiopia was waging at the UN (1941 - 1952) to reunify Eritrea (it’s former territory) after Italian colony ended there in 1941. Mexico was one of the countries that supported Ethiopia’s positions at the UN Security Council. In 1941, Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia. But majority of Eritreans then wanted full integration to unify the territory with Ethiopia. There were a lot of political maneuvering by all sides to achieve their objectives. But in the end, (in 1952) the Unionists with a lot of help from the Emperor (Haile-Silassie) were able to achieve their’s. In the diplomatic arena at the UN, Mexico’s help was very instrumental. To say “Thank You, Mexico”, the Emperor named that square in Addis - Mexico Square. In a nut shell, that is the story of Mexico Adebabay. Question for you, Gary: You said that there was “a walled city” known as Berera where Addis Abeba is situated today. Where did you read that? (Can you please reference your sources for that statement?) There is a book written by an Ethiopian scholar in the last 7-8 years that also talks about Berera. But I think it is still an academic hypothesis. In my opinion, Ethiopian historians will have to do more research and much more debates to authenticate the story of Berera.

The street names have nothing to do with colonization. Most of the streets in Addis are named after the 55 member of the African Union. This is to honor the African states as Addis is the seat of the African union. The Mexico square is named in honor of the close bilateral relations Ethiopia enjoyed with Mexico back in the time of the Emperor. Similarly,there is a square named Ethiopia in Mexico city. It is a well known metro station stop in-fact.

1:53 said “despite Ethiopia never being colonized its got a lot of streets named after different countries like Mauritius, Mauritania,” Now one would take that as implying naming of streets to other countries was due to colonization. That is how I understood that statement.
