Coronad is a resort city right across San Diego Bay from Downtown San Diego. Easily the most famous site in Coronado is the Hotel del Coronado, once the largest resort hotel in the world. Just to the north of the Hotel del Coronado lies the Coronado Dunes. If you visit them, they just appear to be odd mounds on the beach with ice plant growing on the top. But the dunes hold a secret message, one that wasn't noticed for years until Google Maps came around. Join us as we visit Coronado Beach to check out the Dunes and its hidden message.

Thanks, Steve...need I say it? Another memory laner for me. My first duty station after A school was VS-38, NAS North Island, where I worked night check at AIMD (late '70s). A couple of buddies and I had a nightly run from our work building in the middle of the tarmac to the golf course on base to the rear gate, where we'd take the fence line to the water's edge and sling our bodies under the fence to continue our nightly training run down this beach to the seawall in front of the Hotel Del Coronado and then back to the base. I loved the strobe effect of the pre-runway lights when they'd light up to guide planes to the runway, especially if there was a bit of coastal fog in the air. Bet ya can't get on/off the base quite that easy any more. Great duty, especially for a hometown boy, loved my time at NASNI. These dunes were made after my stay at the base, so really appreciate this info. Makes sense that nobody but naval pilots could read it as I'm sure that's a no-fly zone for all but military aircraft. Very impressive work by Mr. Moreno, wonder how many people he shared his little secret with before it was discovered? Thanks for bringing it to our attention...you make me miss my years in San Diego all the more.

Steve, good on you brother for doing what you could for the abandoned dog. Yes, whoever did that sucks! Since finding your channel recently, I’ve become a fan. I enjoy your work. While you find the ship would have been truly amazing and exciting, it’s great to see that compassion for a living creature was more important. Good on you! Looking forward to seeing more.

Hi, I'm catching up on your recent videos. I had no clue about the dune message. My late wife and I used to vacation at Del Coronado, a wonderful place, great memories. Their Sunday brunch was unbelievable.

Those letters have been there for a long time, the hotel del used to have a “hall of history” with pictures from the earliest days of the del and there was a picture from the air showing “Coronado beach” in the dunes

Lived in the San Diego area for most of my life and even worked at North Island for 33 years but never knew about this. Thanks! Looking at it with Google Earth you can clearly see the "Coronado" in the dunes, but to the right of it is a "B" like the start of a new message that was never finished.
@SidetrackAdventures
@SidetrackAdventures 3 года назад
Yeah, I'm not sure what happened with the B. I came across an older video and couldn't tell if it was there or not in it. Was unable to find any info on it.

Staying at Hotel Del is probably one of the highlights I've had as far as hotel stays. It's a great experience if you love the historical nature of the hotel. I had no idea about these dunes! I saw them and was wondering how they were formed because they were kind of awkwardly there, but forgot to look it up. hah.

This is a really interesting story and hidden message. Ice plant is everywhere around San Diego, but it's actually an invasive, non-native species and several conservation groups are pushing for its removal. The dunes and their story are certainly unique and they look really neat when viewed from above. It does make me wonder if there has been any ecological impact from this project, positive or negative.
@donnasmith2720
@donnasmith2720 3 года назад
I googled my childhood home a few years ago and the ice plant we put in our backyard hill/bank is still there.
