The “Before Trilogy" is, in my opinion, one of the greatest gifts of modern cinema. Three films, each separated by nine years, that together tell a beautiful and brutal story of what love means as we progress through life. All three films have an unusual form-comprised almost exclusively of lengthy conversations between the two central characters, Jesse and Celine. So in this video we break Before Sunset into five acts and dissect each one to uncover the invisible structure that keeps eighty pages of conversation engaging, we look at how the script constructs and then destroys each character’s facade, and we examine how each moment is tied to the central dramatic question.

Greyleaf one of the best parts of this film is how he twirls his wedding ring when he says “I know.” I’ve always wondered if it was Ethan or if it was Linklater who told him to do that. Midnight seemed forced--or the fight did. They had to make her unreasonable to give them a reason to fight. It's my favorite in the series too. The first one in comparison felt a little lacking in substance and a bit too idealistic, but then that's what it's like at that age for the characters. The third one was brutal emotionally, and while that's not a criticism, because I'm a romantic idealist, it hurts too much to watch that one. Yes, it hits very close to home for so many of us. What's unique in these films is that the couple really are on the same wavelength, whereas in reality this is a very rare event. In other words, the two lovers are working from a single script and not from two radically different ones, which is so often the case, and which leads to so many problems between men and women.

The film being discussed was The Tourist, and how two incredibly physically beautiful people could have no onscreen chemistry. And ofc doesn't anyone do screen tests to check for that anymore. An excellent analysis of an excellent movie. I love "Sunrise" and "Sunset" so much so that I don't dare watch "Midnight," which has been sitting in my video cabinet for years and which I'm afraid will be devastating. Part of the appeal for me is that I, and obviously many people besides me, have been in situations very comparable to those in these movies, but things never quite panned out this way, presumably because one or another of us missed our cues or fumbled our dialogue. The films provide the most delicious sort of wish fulfillment. What if I had done this or that slightly differently? What if I had asked the perfect question, or given the perfect answer? For this reason (along with the excellent actors, scripts, and production values) the films are timeless.

I finally got to watch all three parts this year. I only watched the first film a long time ago, I lobed it, and I kinda wanted to know what happened next, but was satisfied with not knowing.. Somehow I wished I didn't find out, because the romantic fantasy was undeniably crushed by the two sequels. So a part of me thinks the trilogy was unnecessary, that the story should've been left at their separation.Yet another part of me thinks it was a genuis decision.. But either way, I love the films. I love the dream like atmosphere of the first one, the slap back to reality that was second one, and the inevitable soul crushing realism of the last one. This trilogy is probably the only truly realist depiction of a modern love story that has the closest thong to what could be a "happy ending" far away from all the clichés and false expectations.

While the romance/chemistry definitely can be felt and makes the movie great already great, this movie was more than just a romance. More than just a romance between same-age characters. I think what this video (and your Adaptation short film) proves is that tone and feel matter much, much more than structure. We think of Before Sunset as a "structure rule breaking" film because we remember how we feel more than the Narrative. I was reading a Screenplay recently for a film that hasn't been made yet, and something interesting happened. I was enjoying it a lot and then suddenly I realised that the crisis moment was coming up and when it came, I predicted that there would be a moment where someone gives an inspirational speech and the protagonist gears up to carry on, and it came. And suddenly, I didn't care. It was as if when the Structure became visible, the magic died. This essay provides an important lesson for screenwriters and filmmakers. That the feel of a film trumps everything else, and the best films are the ones that create their feel so well that you can't see how they're constructed. This is a film school worthy video essay. Thank you Michael.

I remember watching before sunrise for the first time, It was so fresh! never in my life did I smile for such a long period of time, ever since they got off the train till the movie ended. Nothing since has made me feel so much involved into something.

Thank you for doing this one, Mike. The "Before..." films have always had a special place in my heart - and I haven't re-watched them anywhere NEAR enough (I was late to the party - only watching the first two shortly before "Midnight" came out). But I know they'll stay with me forever. Also, glad to find out you have a podcast - that's an instant "Add" for me! Thanks again and keep up the amazing work 😉👍

Just can’t get enough of these tranquil, insightful and articulate analysis. They resurrect so much enjoyment from watching fine films such as the before series while laying things out in clear structure that’s often hidden under the complexity of visual story telling. Thank you for all the wonderful content you created. Also, after being reminded of this rather European flavoured trilogy, I wonder if you’d ever take on films like Les Trois Couleurs.

Before Sunset has always been my favourite of the three but Before Midnight still resonates with me the most, it's such a realistic depiction of how a relationship develops through the years... Great video as always Michael!

This is my favorite of the trilogy because this scenario really happened to me and my ex, even before we knew about this movie. We met after a few years, we talked about our careers, relationships and eventually about our past. We had an argument and got it resolved by being honest with each other and it all happened in one afternoon, before sunset.

I don't think there is a series of moves as heartwarming, touching and ultimately devastating as the Before trilogy. Bless Richard Linklater, July Delpy and Ethan Hawke for making such a masterpiece on life itself.

Can't wait to watch this. Love your channel. Love this movie. Match made in heaven. Would be interesting to see you dissect a movie such as Buried (2010), but I suppose it covers a lot of similar ground.

This was so interesting! I find your conception of acts so usuful and interesting. It was o helpful too see them applied to a non-action movie- a movie that's entirely dialogue in fact. I think I got so caught up in the typical action setpeices that SIGNAL a plot point or change that I kind of gave up on the whole concept of the three act structure. I find your way much more intuative, and look foreward to more videos in the future.

I just discovered the Before trilogy just a week ago and I just finished the first two films. They are too wonderful to be watched in rush. I just watched it with my heart filled with joy and relief despite their hardship, because what matters is that you know you have someone to connect to and somewhere in your life beauty and love do exist, even though it doesn't have a happy ending.

The Before trilogy has to be one of my top series of films ever made. It's a hopeful, bittersweet tale of romance that takes itself to another whole level with how immersive and relatable the delivery is. In my mind, this ticks off a certain universal fantasy in so many people's minds: that love finds a way, no matter the obstacle. I'm usually pessimistic, but these films fuel my inner optimistic. Thank you for such a well-done and insightful video. You, as always, did an amazing job. :) x

Listening to podcast, kind of hurts when I watched them in real time and had to wait the 9 years to find out if Celine and Jesse met and then another 9 years to find out what happened after he missed his flight. Ugh! These are some of my favorite movies ever. They meant so much to me and I do not know about structure or story. I just connected emotionally and on a personal level. Thank you for the video.
