In this video, we'll look at a Fender amp that was made for only about one year and you may not have even known existed. It has a high gain channel which DOES NOT SUCK! This is a '93 Fender Professional Tube Series Concert Amp Model PR244. The chassis was also used in the '93 Super model. The reverb has an issue we'll fix, and along the way we'll check out the innards and talk about the schematic a little. We'll also talk about what Fender got right here and what they got wrong, including the all-tube preamp design. This is NOT to be confused with the Rivera Era Concert II amplifier, and it beats the pants off the later Hot Rod Deluxe and Hot Rod Deville high gain offerings.

Many Fender amps with circuit board mounted connection points have a problem with cracked solder joints. Heat, cold, loading, unloading and general jostling and dropping can be responsible but, luckily, the fix is easy. The Hot Rod series is notorious for this on the power tube board. I have had to fix my own, and other bandmates' HRDs, numerous times over the years. Good catch!

I won't mention its little brother the hi gain champ 12. AC-DC crunch in a single 6l6. Not cheap anymore either.
@georgerobartes5989
@georgerobartes5989 2 года назад
@@tednugentlives I guess that's due to the fact that the J231 transistor in the reverb circuit is rare and will cost $20+ if you can find one and as far as I'm aware there is no equivalent and no equivalent for the 2 one off components used in the Champ 12 the LED/ LDR packs . You might be able to make these but Fender don't give values just a part number which is discontinued I believe . Solid State components have a limited life span and are dumped or made obsolescent. Hybrids are even worse unless you go for something that has op amps as there are plenty available and continously upgraded to improve their sound quality and reliability. This amp is a doddle to fix compared to many produced in the 90S , and as the man says you burn a circuit board from one component failure you have a scrap amp on your hands . I'm dealing with one now and Crate is not exactly well known for releasing the necessary detailed schematics to trouble shoot this thing . Would be nice to have some test points and voltages on their drawings .

I have one of these. One of the SWEETEST sounding amps EVER! Amazing cleans (full, loud, chimey, fat, sweet) and: great 2nd channel Tweed-style crunch + great saturated hi-gain 3rd channel. This is one of Fender's best sounding amps. (I've had 'em all too: vintage blackface Champ, Princeton Reverbs, Deluxe Reverb, Vibroluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, and Twin Reverb). This is the best sounding and most versatile. Very loud, 50lbs; too bad about the circuit board design, but mine still works great.

Fender made a 4x10 Super Reverb model in the early 90s with the multiple push/pull gain stages. It was a fantastic amp. I used to play it frequently in the local shop but was too pricey for my budget at the time. Wish I had one now.

I've been playing Metal Guitar for 21 years, and when my older brother Daniel moved across the Country to be closer to family,(he plays too), he showed me his rig..it was that very Amp you are profiling. It is AMAZING for Metal! Lots of Gain, high output, heavy overdrive....ect, I liked it Soo much I recently got lucky and found one in a pawn shop,(a Fender Princeton Deluxe 2-12'' 65Watts), & I payed $120.00 and sold my Peavy, & I fuckin LOVE it! It is not quite as good as the one you have, but really damn close. I have never, and will never buy/play Fender Guitar's, but some of their Amplifiers are really Suitable for my sound. It's kind of a fluke really....most Guys just use a Marshall Half stack with a JCM and call it good. Anyway, Cheers from Seattle Washington! 🤘🏻

I once had a customer that tried to do his own mods on a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. He ended up destroying the pads and traces in many spots. By the time I was done repairing everything, it was just as much point-to-point wired as it was PCB. Worked fine after that though. It cost him more than just replacing the board, but he couldn't wait for the shipping time to Hawaii.

It's actually pretty easy to just jump wires from point to point under a board. I have actually done mods for guys that wanted all of their PCB mounted pots and jacks replaced and wire jumpered to the board. It sure makes them last longer.

Yeah, me too. It just becomes more and more of a patch job as things fail and board pads wear out, traces break, etc. You know what I mean.

Gravity solder joints are susceptible to an occasional cold joint. Lots of early (even prized) Japanese and other imported hifi amps suffer from it. As far as jacks, you may occasionally need to use a curved pick tool to tighten the tip contact. Cheap steel can fatigue and cause an intermittent gap or poor contact with an inserted cable. 👍🏼

I own the Pro Tube Twin Amp from that era since late 2001 and I love it's sound but it is so freakin' unrelieable. Currently the tremolo is gone, the reverb as well and the effects loop is only producing noise. It's the fourth time in six years that the amp breaks down and I now surrender.

It almost sounds like it's ever so sightly out of phase, or that open vowel sound you get from a half cocked wah. It sounds great, i should have given mine more time to see what it really did. It sounds more touch sensitive than what I'd expect from a Blackface. I think this would be a really cool voicing for an amp-in a box type drive pedal. It's unique, definitely not a Marshall, vox, Dumble or even the usual Fender drive.
@wes11bravo
@wes11bravo Год назад
Wow - I have one of these that's damn near mint. This is one the few glowing reviews I've heard - most people only ever mention it to ensure it doesn't get confused for the hand wired Rivera design. I think I played it at one band practice before I got my Marshall. Not that it was a dog amp but I don't remember it making an impression on me one way or another. This video shows what a nightmare it would be to work on. I had half a mind to keep the major components, ditch the printed circuit board, and install a point to point wired design. Considering its comparative rarity and the fact it can be made to sound ok as the stock PR244 Fender Concert Amp from 1994 that it is, it'd be a dumb, complicated, and overly expensive decision in terms of time and materials.

i owned a shop in the early 80s. we were a fender dealer and all of the rivera designed amps were great. super champ, concert, twin II etc. Fender made a big mistake discontinuing this line of amps. the new regime that purchased fender (according to the sales rep) supposedly just didn't like the sound. to close to mesa boogie and other high gain amps. kind of a dumb decision.

Considering all the electronic and serviceability Achilles heels of this amp, regardless of its sound and other details, my opinion is that this amp DOES suck. I would take one if someone gave it to me, but I’d never spend money on one. Particularly when you said that if the board goes out and you can’t find another from another one of these one-year-only rare amps, that it’s truly a dead and unrecoverable paperweight of an amp. That actually DOES SUCK. Thanks for the video.

I wish Fender would have just paid a bit more attention to making some good higher gain amps. I don't mean Boogie territory but just a bit hotter, reason being that I love how Fender tones sound when pushed to the edge. It's just a different angle than the Marshall/British thing. I dont think it's an either/or proposition. It just makes sense. I do like the Super Sonic and Vibro King a lot. That's the right direction so far as higher gain options. I don't use metal levels of gain but I dip into hard rock territory and classic rock.

It looks like EU solder, (mostly tin)! Yuck! , (non eutectic) means it doesn't flow right and stay shiny. (and conductive). When You go over EU solder with 60/40 tin lead, yes it will work for a while.... that is FOR A WHILE.... Doesn't it look like ALL the surfaces of the board are covered in "tin whisker film"? The board should be wiped down. And as far as that goes it will soon have another failure because of the E U solder. The only way to fix it properly is to remove the solder from every single connection and re-do the entire thing with 60/40 which is really not possible!.... solder wicking out 700 plus connections!. Which is why these amps are not good. You can tell it is E U solder because even when You apply fresh 60/40 solder to it , it stays shiny to a point , and then instantaneously goes 'milky',...look at the joint being reflowed at 14:46 / that doesn't ever happen with virgin 60/40 solder, unless You wiggle the connection as it is cooling or there is no flux. We used to refer to those as cold solder joints. E U solder has something like 1/100th the longevity of conventional solder.

Yes those amps were a bitch. I was a Fender Gold tech through the 90’s and into the 2000’s. Those amps were a nightmare. I believe thats why they didn’t last long? I had several amps that the octal tube sockets on the 6L6’s broke away from the PCB. Not only just bad or broken solder joints, but actual cracked traces. Too much heat on the traces and sockets. Any repair was hours of labor. I think Fender lost their shirt on warranty repairs. Another one was the 90’s peavey tube PCB amp. I forget the model, but it was a all brown chassis. Same design. A complete nightmare. All tubes mounted on one PCB. I took small fortune from Peavey fixing those things. The whole board had to be removed to work on them. Board in, board out, board in, board out. UGH!!!! Great video. Thanks.

I got a kick out of watching The Guitologist poking his left index finger 12:02 around the circuit side while his right thumb presses against the phone plug ground of vacuum tube powered p.c. board where DC voltages can range from 250 VDC to over 350 VDC. Then see his left arm jump back (no comment) at 12:23! Hello Heart Way! Apparently he survived that to equally "luck out" that there was no sharp object to block the rocket lift off of that jerked left arm. Why have a workbench populated with those fancy test instruments when you can use your body as a live-circuit continuity tester? Kaah-flump! Mom, "Oh that's just Guito collapsed on the basement floor again. He's testing is voltage tolerance!"

I can tell you this. Those are not cheap amps at all, at least in price, cheapest I saw on Ebay was $950, and they go up from there. Quite a bit of money for an used amp if you ask me...

Is it a special version of the concert? ... I have an earlier year than that ... thought they were made since the 1960s .... is it 112 or 210... think there was a Celestion speaker option too

No, those were around 10 years earlier. There was a 1x12 Rivera-era Concert but it was point-to-point handwired.

I love the early Concert amp as well at this model. A sealed cabinet with 4 - 10" speakers, 12" or 2 15" sounds fantastic..!! Glad you inspected and resoldered all the Cold Solder Joints..!! From Wikipedia >> The Fender Concert was a guitar amplifier made by Fender Musical Instruments. Its production can be split over 2 phases. The first of these running from 1960 and until approximately 1965, at which time a typical Fender Concert was priced at $315. During the 1960s, the Concert was for all practical purposes the same amplifier as the Vibrasonic but with four 10" speakers. In a later phase, the Concert was updated by Paul Riviera in the early 1980s ("concert" and "concert II") and a subsequent 1x12 variant of the Concert amp appeared briefly in the mid-1990s.

Thanks so much for posting this procedure! I had the exact same problem with the reverb not operating on my '93 Super Amp (the big sister amp to this one - same pc board design). I am not nearly as electronics savy as you. I have good experience soldering pickups and caps in my guitars but that's the extent of my experience. However, I followed the same steps in resoldering the connections to the reverb circuit and came away with it working perfectly. It sounds so great now. I was going to sell the amp - I'm holding on to it at this point - it's toooo good.
