The higher Education system is in crisis, with outcomes for college students declining across the board. In the race to raise good college applicants, we have forgotten to raise adults. In this enlightening talk, Julia Rogers explores the positive impact of meaningful Gap time - for success in college and in life. Julia Rogers is a seasoned traveler, writer, speaker and experiential education expert. She is the founder of EnRoute Consulting, an organization dedicated to fueling the gap year movement and developing a generation of compassionate, driven and resourceful global citizens. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Julia, this is amazing! Growing up, the way others discussed gap years, made it sound like it was not okay. That anybody who took a gap year, was just going to waste their time and not end up going back to college. The way you put it all, really opened up my eyes! I work in a residence hall on a campus where I manage a building filled with non-traditional students, and it makes it far more interesting to know why they came back, why it took them so long to get a degree... when there is no timeframe when you should go to college and attain a degree, everybody moves at their own pace. I think it would be fascinating to see more institutions work with students who are considering a gap year and help them find ways or programs to get into during their gap year to help them find who they are and what they want.

I think it’s important for young people to know their goals 10, 15, 20 years after HS, then work out ways to meet these goals, and no two people will have the same trajectory to meet their objectives. Some go to college, trade school, or gain work experience. What’s important is investing in their future 😊

Gap years are not compulsory, so you can go to college normally. With that in mind, there is a gap year as an option, and I think it is indispensable to promote its existence to society.

Its actually funny how dogshit the american education system for college is specifically, in the UK we have debt but it is a tax deductable from your wage and is really just a small percent, it is super manegable and if you are making below 26,000 pounds a year you do not have to pay it,
