Cancel Culture isn't something new in Korean entertainment. Throughout the year, several celebrities who've been involved with huge scandals and most of them are rising stars have become victims of this cancel culture. Some tabloids even speculated that their agencies were behind these scandals. Can they recover from these? With the so-called cancel culture especially prevalent in the Korean entertainment scene today, can these celebrities still be given a second chance?
been involved in scandals recently, and lost a brand, drama or film deal as a result.
Ji Soo was a rising star. He first rose to fame for his role in the big 2017 hit Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, and more recently had acclaimed roles as a high school student in When I Was the Most Beautiful and a twenty-six year old cancer patient in Amanza. But River Where the Moon Rises was his first leading role in a project with high expectations. A retelling of the Princess and the Idiot myth, the action-based historical drama starred Ji Soo as the idiot, inspired by the princess to become a mighty general.
But Ji soo has recently made headlines with accusations of school bullying as well as sexual harassment. As a result, he had to drop River When the Moon Rises, where he was the lead, while it was still running. According to Soompi, the drama production company is even suing him and his agency for 3 billion won (US$2.7 million) worth of damages.
Seo Ye-ji’s reputation has been shaken by a number of scandals in the last months.
The It’s Okay Not to Be Okay actress’ reputation has been tarnished by a slew of scandals recently; she’s been accused of school bullying and staff abuse, among other controversies.
Box office sales for her most recent project Recalled, which Korean local cinemas this week, seem to be doing well - although Seo skipped out on a press conference for the film.
Her past romance with Kim Jung-hyun also embroiled with controversies of her manipulative behavior. On April 12, Dispatch, the well-known Korean tabloid published a report about the 2018 K-drama, Time, which Kim starred in. The article outlined comparisons between Time's original script and the final version used in the broadcast, pointing out that 13 scenes including physical contact between the main characters, Kim and Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun, were changed or removed. Dispatch further suggested that Kim was ordered not to film any romantic scenes in the drama by Seo, his girlfriend at the time.
Most recently, actor Kim Seon Ho whose drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha just ended, was the subject of accusations when an anonymous user posted in an online community about their past relationship and how he coerced her to get an abortion with the promise of marriage. After two days of speculations and rumors, he issued an apology for his "inconsiderate behavior" towards his girlfriend, and in the process, confirming that the allegations were true.
Even before his statement, some of his endorsement ads have been pulled down, and perhaps more will be forthcoming. He has been dropped off from some of his upcoming projects, including two films and a variety show. On October 25th, Brand Representatives explained why actor Kim Seon Ho got removed from advertisements so quickly, Even before he admitted to being Actor K. He reportedly has been ghosting the representatives for more than three days before he issued an apology.
South Korea is notorious for expecting its celebrities to have spotless personal records. So when actors get involved in messy divorces, drunk driving, bullying or other scandals, it's not unusual for the brands they endorsed to unceremoniously cut ties, or for TV shows they starred in to replace them. Even if the accusations aren't proven, companies take drastic steps in preemptive damage control, quickly distancing themselves from any negative rumors that could ruin their products.
