For the past five years, scientists from 16 countries have been studying Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest and most active fault, the Hikurangi Subduction Zone. The research team has uncovered critical new knowledge, forecasting a 25% chance of a major event on that fault in the next 50 years.
This short documentary tells the full story of what they have found.
This research was led by GNS Science and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment Endeavour Fund.
Directed by Magnolia Lowe, Magpie Content Creation, and kindly sponsored by the Earthquake Commission - EQC.

Awsome info thanks. Some info on the mechanics of how the North Island subduction on the east coast changes to subduction on the west coast of the South Island. The transition in the Wellington/Marlborough area is obviously very complex but I've not found any info explaining the how or why. Many thanks and keep going!

EACH STEP COUNTS. That's how you are supposed to make you living and get yourself out of trouble even without the context of an Earthquake. Take care out there boys and girls.

Question: What Frequency is played over the sea bed when you put that Sounding ship toeing the sound devices? and What power do the compressed air sound devices have? and What are the chances of triggering an earth quake using sounding ships like this. I'm a Kiwi, I have an interest.

The seismic signal from an air gun isnt powerful enough to trigger a fault rupture. Once the pulse leaves the gun it travels through a water column and kms of solid rock before any faults are encountered. By then the signal is seriously attenuated...its why we have to amplify and process the returning signal so much to get meaningful data out of same. There are no documented instances of seismic air guns triggering an earthquake. Maximum sound level for an air gun..around 250dB but thats measured right at the gun. Frequency....usually air guns deliver most of the energy at below 125Hz.

Good afternoon geologist, I'm from the south of Brazil, where can we do a volcano explosion simulation? I have premonitory dreams, already proven, and I had one about a stronger explosion of the earth, which is going to happen in North West Australia.
