Growing up South of Pasadena in the early 80's I had two sweet hills to bomb down on the way to school. One day I had the perfect crash, the wabi sabi of my skating career, on the second hill just passing the entrance to The Old Mill. I was in full tuck, head first, arms behind my back like a speed skater, and I hit a magnolia tree seed pod. Physics happened and I did a clean front flip to perfect backpack and soles of my feet landing. I slid/ran it out; no trauma, no road rash, kept using the backpack and the deck was fine. It was a shortened G%S Pine Design with Trackers and Yo Yo's for the historians out there.

Bombing hills has always been one of my favorite things to do. I just turned 41 yesterday and have been skating for 36 years now. I live on a big hillside so there's plenty of hills to skate. It's not that dangerous unless you're doing something stupid. You can't just jump in head first. You're gonna end up in the hospital. The feeling you get when you get to the bottom is the best. Skated in the 80's on a Bill Danforth deck. Never Bombed an SF hill because I live on the East Coast. But I did bomb a hill near my house back in the day. I ended up losing control, gravel in my knee, and a serious case of road rash. It was worth it.

@Greg-df4bx

There's a crew of people in San Francisco who do something similar but with the ability to stop if needed. They use longer boards (longboards) and softer wheels that let them slide their board sideways like a snowboarder to control their speed. It seems like most of them if not all of them wear helmets. If you look up "sunset sliders san francisco" you can find some stuff on RU-vid. It seems like for this crew (in the New Yorker video) part of the appeal is not having control
@duncanhunter2714
@duncanhunter2714 3 года назад
Trust me these guys have control and are hyper focussed . They even know how to fall at this speed. I promise you will never feel more alive than rattling down a hill on a skateboard in clothes you can wear to the bar afterwards. No helmet / gloves required.
@Greg-df4bx
@Greg-df4bx 3 года назад
@DanielBx look up James Kelly or Josh Neuman raw runs. they go like 60 mph down mountain roads. it's not kooky to ride downhill using equipment built for that purpose. bombing on a street deck with little trucks and rock hard wheels and no helmet / no slide gloves is unnecessary. all you can do is go in a straight line or carve a bit and there's no way to stop if something happens outside of your control like a car pulling out of a driveway or a truck blocking an intersection. even people like Sergio Yuppie (look him up too) who ride hard wheel setups just as fast if not faster than the guys in this vid can still stop if they need to, and they do crazy tricks while going down the hill. riding a street deck down a hill with no way to stop is just as impractical as trying to kickflip a giant downhill longboard deck in a skatepark. your attitude is equivalent to hating on a downhill mountain bike rider for not using a bmx bike with pegs on it when they go down the mountain. if it's your thing to bomb on a street deck without being able to stop then fine but don't hate on people for using equipment designed for their chosen activity.

@@Greg-df4bx shut up nerd. It’s called being casual. Skate with the homies, go the a bar, get some food, have a smoke sesh, skate some more. How fun does all that sound while you’re LUGGING AROUND A GIANT LONGBOARD AND HOLDING A HELMET
