Chris Thorndyke sets such a low bar as a human character in Sonic that a guy like Wade Whipple is easy to see as a monumental improvement. We see him actually go through more relatable struggles as an abandoned kid and come into his own with his bowling skill. It is far greater character development as opposed to some lonely rich kid with no real issues.
Yeah, I think a lot of Sonic fans need to be more realistic about this stuff. Popularity tends to make things more mediocre. Not that this show was terrible by any means, but it definitely wasn't going to be Super Knuckles action all the time like many people thought it'd be. It's unfortunate, but it could have been so much worse. I guess I'm like you guys. I'm at that age where I accept and enjoy things for their faults rather than raising a stink about something I have no control over. Besides, there's plenty of fan projects that do give me what I want and you guys have even made some of them. Thanks for hosting this fun podcast guys.
I really enjoyed the Knuckles show for what it was - definitely dream of one day having a Sonic show that is just "the IDW Comics but a show" or "The Frontiers Prologue animation but a show" in tone/style, but yeah, for what it was, Knux was entertaining from start to finish, and I agree with you that the character moments in episode 5 were surprisingly poignant. Episode 4 was also an absolute riot. And it's definitely saying something that I not only went from not caring about Wade at all to caring about him... well, at all, but he's actually a more compelling character than Tom and Maddie to me now.
20:10 As an Odyssey critic I take offense to that! I kid of course, but I think that game and BOTW broke me and now I lean way more toward linear games. Korok Seeds and Power Moons... No thanks.
