A walk in the Campsie Fells above Lennoxtown in search of an ancient hillfort. The Meikle Reive fort is thought to date to the Early Iron Age, and contains a series of very well preserved banks and ditches that once afforded the hillfort's occupants a good level of defence. Although now largely earthen in nature, it's walls were once some twelve feet thick and made of stone. This was a very well defended hillfort, and today exists at a good level of preservation. That preservation includes a pond, the only Early Iron Age pond I have ever seen and, of course, the question is: what on earth was it used for? This ancient hillfort sits amidst some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery, and as such the hike to get there offers some wonderful hilly views.
