I got to share the stage with the Hinson’s many times back in the day, and they could get an audience going like no other gospel group. There will never be another Kenny. One of a kind voice. ❤
Kenny Hinson was a great singer. He passed away from cancer at the age of 45 in 1995. The Hinson's are great song writers also, they wrote "The Lighthouse" just to mention one.
Kenny was called "The Voice" of Gospel music. God called him home several years ago. We miss him greatly here, but he and many others are stirring up Heavens Choir!
I have been following The Henson's since around 1972. They are great, I sing a lot of their song still to today. At one time I was in Niagra Falls Canada around 1977 with a church group and was visiting the tower with the rotating dinning room on the to. In the bottom was a bar/dinning room. The others in my group hounded me till I went in and sang. I sang Hinsons song "That I could still go free". I was the only that got a reaction from the crowed. Every one loved their song.
My mom was really close with The Hinsons back in the day. They are great people and had lots of fun. One funny thing she told me and you can hear it in the last verse of this song, he gets a little loose with that last “Gone”…. “You can call me John” 😂
I had the pleasure of seeing The Hinson's many times before Kenny passed and will agree with others that he was one of the best singers that ever was! What a talent, gone way too soon!
I was sixteen when I heard the song, I wore out twenty copies of the cassette. I went on to become a gospel music DJ on radio and became close friends with the Hinsons. Jesus Christ changed my life and it all started with Call me gone. God bless you.
Ole Kenney is and was one of my best friends. We spent a lot of great times on the road together! Lots of memories with the family. RIP Kenny you will always live on in the hearts of millions.
@ Modern Renaissance Man Kenny Hinson is highly regarded as a singer. What a voice. I knew about the Hinsons 50 years ago as a small child. They sang on a TV show called The Gospel Jubilee. His story... He was offered a recording contract to sing country but instead chose gospel. He had already been singing gospel for a long time. The band had gotten back together after being disbanded for a while to do their Hallelujah Tour. One of the soundmen used a home camera to record them, ran music through soundboard. The footage is the last concert footage there is, fuzzy but we have it. They were going to do a professional taping, but sadly, Kenny got sick, and it turned out kidney cancer and he passed away in 1995 at age 42. The last song footage he could barely stand singing "The Lighthouse" ( his brother wrote) on the Gaithers. Not his best but he gave it all he had. There are other videos easily found of The Lighthouse when he was healthy. Kenny called Gone to be with the Lord.
This guys named Kenny Hinson his Brother Ronnie Nephew Bo and sister Yovone. He is the reason I started singing!! Sadly he passed away in the 90's from kidney cancer.
Legend has it that when Kenny sang on the family's final album, "One More Hallelujah", that he did every one of his lead parts in one cut. This man was indeed "the voice"!
Kenny was called "THE VOICE" by many many of his peers. The wrote so many great songs. I have seen "The Lighthouse" and "That I Could Still Go Free" mentioned, I also love "Soul Fillin Station"
He was as they say "Bad to the Bone" I had the awesome pleasure of singing on a program in Columbus Georgia. He was as many say the real Deal. God gained an awesome voice the day Kenny Hinson joined the Heavenly Chior. Blessings to all who Hear this song. 🙏
Ty, I'm only 9 months late but I have to agree. Kenny Hinson (1954-1995) could have taken his talent and gifted voice to country, but he remained true to the calling he answered in 1967. Dr. Larry Hinson (1956-2020) was also gifted in voice and literally driven by the call to preach the Good News. Sadly, he died this past spring.
I've known the Hinsons all my life. Kenny, Ronnie, Bo, Andi can't remember the sisters name. My Mom traveled with Wendy Bagwell and the Sunliters. I grew up in Southern Gospel Music. Kenny passed with Cancer, what a great Man. He lived what he sang about. A true Man of God. Miss you Kenny see you in Heaven.
That dude was my good friend..I miss his terribly. He produced my sisters album and actually sang with her on it - probably the only other album he sang on that wasn't Hinson.
Kenny was one in a million... unequaled in God given talent. He could have been a country super star.... but he was uncompromisingly devoted to Christ.
The vocal styling that you heard is called “curling” a note. A lot of country singers, Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell and Johnny Rodriguez were some with that same style. Kenny never left his calling of music ministry to pursue a secular career. He was committed to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and served Him until the end.
Loved the Hinsons. Loved Kenny & knew him. He was a TRUE man of God. Broke my heart when the Good Lord called him home at the young age of 42 in 94. I still Miss him Dearlyyy.
My grandfather was a pastor/evangelist and responsible for many Assembly of God churches being built through out Missouri, later in life he brought about many gospel concerts around K.C. , my grandparents knew the Hinsons and groups like the Hemphills and the Gaithers very well, I saw them sing many times growing up, God blessed my that way 😁
One of my all time favorites! Never a voice like Kenny since. I love Country Gospel, Bluegrass Gospel & Southern Gospel so yep... I knew it was a gospel song right away. The Hinson Family are back together singin', although those in this video have probably all made it to Glory now. The Lighthouse was another great Hinsons song (and just about every group has sung it). PTL! Thank you for sharing!!
From the beginning verses I can relate "Call me a dreamer cause I call it mine heaven." He's homesick for it though he's never been there and sees himself as a stranger in this fallen world. *A sinful world that continues to acknowledge there is a God yet they deny him by not being in a serious relationship with Him. 🙏💕🙌 As for me it still stands for now in 2022 We're not supposed to be friends with this world 💙 Love you all 💖
You just should have had the chance to sit front row center stage at one of their concerts! Spirit so thick you could cut it with a knife! Had the privilege of hearing them sing this song more than once! "Awesome" is an understatement!
This gospel group was the standard set for all other country gospel bands. Kenny was fantastic, Ronnie (on the far right) is a great songwriter and MC of the group, Yvonne is their sister, the fellow in the middle is Ronnie's son Bo, who started singing with this family group when he was 17. Three members of this group have passed- Kenny, the piano player Rodney, and the drummer Tracy Richardson. And, sadly the original baritone singer, Larry Hinson passed away a few days ago.
That intro is what you call a Hinson southern twang legend style trade Mark.. there are 2 people I know that have it naturally in them 1. was my Uncle Kenny Hinson And 2. the young man on stage with him whom he mentored and groomed to continue the legacy which he did and is still continuing the ministry of our family THE HINSONs that is my big brother Bo Hinson.. And I am Kyn Hinson.. And with Bo's son we are The Current line up of THE HINSONs .. My Uncle Kenny passed away to Kidney Cancer in 1995.. When Jesus called for him .. Like the song says.. He was gone.. I bet he's having a blast singing for the Lord in heaven choir.. Thank you for that fun review on my family.. I enjoyed it
Man that dude right There is my greatest country Gospel inspiration. Pure Holy Ghost Blue eyed soul! That low thang is to country what that Baritone growl is to soul..Barry White, Teddy P. Having said that what made him special is that He lived what he sang for God and treat all people as decent human beings. He passed at 42. Began professionally with his family at 14...Great God!
You need to hear him sing The Lighthouse. He was a great Southern Gosple singer and writer. Sadly he's gone to his reward now and greatly missed. I grew up on The Hinsons!
Some people like beer, some people like light liquors, some people like dark liquors. Some music is for some and not for others. Jesus told the disciples don't bother the one guy for doing good will because he wasn't an enemy. I love this song and the singer is blessed.
I recently saw an interview with the lead singer’s brother Ronnie about Kenny’s style of singing. He said it was a “...Bluegrass move, where Kenny went high then low...”. The low then high part probably too.
You're right, that dude was bad. In the Southern Gospel music genre and community, he is considered unanimously to have been the baddest of the bad and arguably the greatest Southern Gospel male vocalist of all time. Throughout his career, he was offered multiple contracts to record secular country music by the biggest major labels in Nashville but he turned them all down because of his undying commitment to Jesus Christ and to music ministry. His brother, Ronny Hinson, the man on far right of the quartet, is one of the greatest and most celebrated Southern Gospel song-writers of all time.
I love the Hinsons. I went to their first concert when I was 7 years old, in 1984. I have seen them in concert many times, and we got to know them. Kenny Hinson's son, Weston Hinson, has a group now, and he sounds just like his dad. Weston sung on two songs on our CD, The Nealeys. My favorite song and singer ever, Kenny Hinson.
I've known my Hinsons since I was a baby. I loved your facial reactions. Hilarious!! And God Love YA!! You heard what that Angel Kenny Hinson could do with that magical voice!!
I love the Hinsons I've listened to there music all my life Kenny was great You also need to listen to his sister The Freemans Children of the dust they're so anointed you'll love it
Yes love the Hinson Family. Unfortunately Kenny Hinson passed away at a young age with cancer. He was one very talented singer and there hasn't been many that had the style he had!
Kenny was the best voice in gospel music. Sadly he’s gone to be with his Maker. Yes, he would have be great in country music but he choice to serve the Lord in winning souls to the kingdom! He was a fantasy singer and son writer. A Great human being. A great husky and father. I truly miss his talent and friendship .
By the way, Kenny may get some of his style of singing from Country singing legend George Jones. He was a big fan of him. I heard George was a big fan of Kenny and the rest of the Hinsons as well.
