The career of Matine (by Silver Moon x Matador) was that of a shooting star rising high and then unfortunately crashing down like meteorite. Though she was well known in Denmark as a young dressage horse, she made her international break through and fame at a very rapid speed. Within one year she premiered at Grand Prix level and won individual silver and bronze at the 2006 World Equestrian Games.
And that is when her career virtually ended. The mare competed successfully at a few more World Cup qualifiers in the winter of 2006-2007 but she injured herself slipping off the trailer at the 2007 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas. As of then Matine continously struggled with injuries and never returned to the show ring.
In August 2009 Møller announced that Blue Hors had given up the fight to get her back to full health. They gave the mare a peaceful retirement as a broodmare in the field and had planned on inseminating her with Blue Hors Zack' semen this spring. Matine spent her last days being "a horse" with her buddy, the retired team horse Blue Hors Cavan.
Matine's silver medal winning kur to music is to date one of the most viewed equestrian videos on RU-vid.
Matine was bred by Inger Katballe and became 13 years old
The world famous dancing grey mare, Blue Hors Matine, was humanely put down today after a tragic accident in the field. A passer-by had noticed there was something wrong with the grey mare in the field and notified a staff member at Blue Hors.
"There was no doubt about it that Matine had broken her left front leg at the knee," said the saddened Blue Hors manager Esben Møller. "The vet immediately diagnosed that there was no way possible to save her life."

I've never understood why this performance was so lauded and why the comments on the video are 99% positive. I've always thought the horse looked super unhappy and tense (that constantly switching tail!) and now, having watched the Helgstrand documentary, I understand why.

A swishing tail may mean a horse is simply concentrating and working very hard to complete a task, like all sports people. The good choice of music and the rider's and horse's perfect timing is what's propelling the speaker's and audiences attention.

Absolutely stunning - to keep In time with the music that closely is so difficult and this mare is so beautiful. That being said the Dressage world is going through what all the rest of the “ upper crust and wealthy “ have gone through, more flash, more extension, more height at the trot. The fact that this mare is WRINGING her tail the entire time is discomfort… idk how she passed, and I’m so sorry such a magnificent horse is lost to the world. RIP.

RIP, you beautiful mare. And shame on her owners, they broke her spirit and used and abused her for greed. (I know there will be backlashes on this comment, but think twice before you do. I am a zoologist and former vet student. I wanted to spec into large animal medicine, ungulates in specific, but horse people are so monumentally insufferable that I abandoned my veterinary training to focus on zoology and ecology field studies instead. Seeing the arguments happening in the comment thread was a comforting reminder that I made the correct choice. Working with dangerous, unpredictable wild animals is preferable to dealing with even one single equestrian. I don't get it...does English riding just attracts the lowest common denominator of humanity, or is there something about English riding that transforms normal people into utter conkwockets?

Oh, give it a rest. There are arseholes everywhere, in every discipline as well every profession. Most of the people calling out cruel training methods are people in the exact same discipline who would never dream of treating their horses that way
@cn3824
@cn3824 Месяц назад
Having ridden out West, the cowboys treat their horses even worse. Between the foxhunting, eventing, cow roundups, rodeo and horse racing - both Tbred and Q Horse - there is much to be disgusted by. All of it championed by respective societies, despite the abuse. Any discipline using bits, spurs and whips is abusive in my book. Whips are such standard fare, no one even questions the cruelty of them. Despite my early training in horsemanship by dressage masters and good teachers, I've come to view most equestrian activities as abusive and nasty. And finally, true horsemanship has been forever lost. Veterinarians, trainers - a huge gap in understanding, past knowledge, common sense and kindness.

Matine was put to sleep after breaking one of her front legs whilst at stud in March 2010. It's very rare that a broken leg can be successfully repaired. Many horses suffer post surgery complications; anaesthesia excitement: either on induction or on recovery, laminitis, infections, pins failing. Pound for pound, a horse has less muscle and skin in it's legs than a human. It's also a prey animal, designed to run if threatened, with that in mind rehabilitation is very difficult due to pain control and lack of cooperation from the horse. It's very expensive for a 90% failure rate whereas colic surgery has depending on the condition has 70% success rate. That of course presumes that the owner has noticed the symptoms and summoned the vet immediately and NOT used the 'wait and see ' approach. Gone off, run a few errands, 2 hours later; horse has collapsed vet called and says upon examination that nothing can be done, he has to euthanized.

Yeah, I am an English rider and I fully agree with you. It's awful how some people can defend this riding. Unfortunately many English riders do ride like that though. They "zigzag" on the horses bit to make them drop their heads (which the horses only do to escape the pressure of the bit) and jab them with spurs. I hope people will realise how awful we are treating our horses someday, in all disciplines of riding.

many disciplines are not meant to be abusive. dressage is a beautiful discipline and i highly recommend it but sadly there are abusive riders in every discipline. jumping if done too often can cause pain for the horse but this is why horses who are jumped frequently are given multiple days in a week off of jumping to save their backs. if the disciplines are done properly and breaks are given from it to just have a nice trail ride or something light work or no work at all then it’s perfectly ok.

A lot of people like to think these horses aren't enjoying what they are doing here. Horses love to run, horses love to jump, and they love to dance. Many horses will dance and strut like this all on their own. It's not trained to do it. It's not as refined as a horse that has been trained and had time to practice. Certain hot blooded horses will dance and strut just because it's fun for them. Anyone who rides and knows a thing or two about horses knows what I say is true. Now, forcing them to pull heavy wagons in the heat... These dressage horses are worth a lot, and I mean ALOT of money. You'd better believe an animal worth that much money is well treated.

The elevation between front legs and hind legs is not equel the head bobbing rather lowering of haunches also a stiff stuck jaw a d open mouth, sadly this was shown as the epitomy of great dressage at clinics for aspiring judges. Watching again now, having only Just begun to dip my toe into pursuing showing with my own mare, I am simultaneously struck anew by the appearance of her agitation (the dramatic tail action) and the incongruous appearance of her swinging ears - which would have seemed to me to be a relaxed and happy expression of movement. So which is it? Is she unhappy and in pain? Or is she expressive and enthusiastic? Or is it both? I don't want to start a war here, I only want to understand better.

Based on what we know about the way this rider treats and trains his horses, I don't think she was especially happy.

The floppy forward ear is a sign of ear nerve blocking. Yes its a thing in show horses especially ones who like to pin their ears.. its huge in the higher level how show world..no matter the breed. Ive been at shows where ive seen people literally putting an ice pack on the bridle path behind the ears. I was a kid and actually in the same show barn. The horse was a top teir pleasure horse. I asked the assistant what she was doing out of curioisty.. and she said to me.. he has a headache..as I got older and finally got my top teir horse I learned what trainers did to these animals. Let's just say we went to a different barn when we learned what they had done to my horse to learn 6 new classes at the world show to be a competitor for the super gelding award. Im so glad we changed trainers. Even though he came from their barn and had already won world championships. My new trainer and I were able to earn the same prestige without yhe abuse and I went on to win several youth world championships. We unfortunately had to sell.. life changes and showing horses at that level is expensive. But his new owner loved him and kept him safe well into a happy retirement. The show horse world is cut throat and people do ugly things. One thing I can say though is that drug testing is done constantly at shows..at random and best believe any winning horse is getting tested unfortunately you can't test for nerve blocking

I'm going to have to look this up but, people commenting, have you been involved in this type of horse competition? I ask because, I have had horses in competition majority of my young life - 15yrs+. Always happy horses. There was no way any of our horses were abused or in duress. Our horses loved their dressage, show jumping & cross-country events. Any sign they were unhappy or ill, we withdrew from events. No way were any horses/ponies forced to compete. In fact, there was always a vet that cleared each horse/pony prior to eventing. Anyone commenting that has not been involved in horse riding needs to consider their comments before I send them to RU-vid for review. Unsolicited comments can be contested in court for slander - some with imprisonment outcomes. Something to consider if you add comments without proof. Much love to all, especially the horses I rode in events. Under no circumstances the vet did not clear my pony for competition. She was a pony. If she had any health issues prior to competition, we withdrew. Pony came first.

All you haters! These horses are living better than you! Best food, immaculate barns! Best health care! They are living and treated like the Olympic athletes they are! They are living better than most Americans! And they wouldn't do it if they didn't love it! They are a 1200 pound animal, they do it because they love their job and treated like royalty!

The horse was 1 of my favorites but I wanted to kick the snot out of the rider. Just look at the frothing mouth and lashing tail, that is not a happy horse. Too many of them are abused. They really need to fix dressage, maybe forbid bits and spurs until the riders actually learn how to ride properly. No rollkur of any kind either.

frothing mouth is a good thing, but the tail isnt. also they arent really abused, just mistreated and incorrectly trained with shitty riders.
