The Historical Fishpool Street | St Albans 

Fishpool Street in St Albans has a rich history, blending community life and historical significance over centuries.
Previously, for 900 years, it served as the initial or final stop on the London to Manchester route. Today, it retains a vibrant atmosphere, welcoming both long-term residents and newcomers. Architecturally and historically significant, it remains a key heritage site and a business-friendly area home to local traders.
Contrary to popular belief, the fish pool existed before St Albans Abbey, which was founded by Saxon King Offa in AD793. It was used by Offa's fishermen and likely formed by damming the River Ver. Once the Abbey was established, Fishpool Street connected it to Kingsbury.
In the tenth century, the Abbot rerouted Watling Street to ensure travelers passed the Abbey and descended Fishpool Street before rejoining Watling Street. The fish pool was eventually drained for health reasons.
