ABOUT JORDAN REEVE
A full-time planner, Jordan Reeve specialises in creating videos about the built environment to tell its stories. The topics cover the historical development of cities alongside psychogeography-style walks, which aims to uncover the urban environment as well as pose questions about the space and place in which we live, work, and play. He lives in Newcastle Upon Tyne and attempts to showcase the modern face of a former industrial city, which is still finding its way in regeneration.

14:54 Strangely enough Cale Cross house and the old Bass HQ in front of it, get a big thumbs up from two visiting Americans @ 1:38 in the video 'Exploring NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE: Is this the best city in the UK?!'. They just love 'New Castle's' mix of new and old.

There is a small model of the city centre just inside Newcastle Uni's King's Gate building on Barras Bridge, opposite the Civic Centre. It's squeezed under the though, stairs so it's easy to miss. There used to be a small cast bronze model on the pavement opposite the station but I don't know where that is now.

what’s great about that model is that it allows you to find buildings on campus by lighting up. which I always think is so impressive

To anyone who is criticising the newer developments in the area, just know that before they were built, the land was most likely abandoned shipyards or derelict brewery’s. As someone form the wider Newcastle area, these new developments are only a positive for the city as they help to revitalise derelict industrial buildings

I mostly agree m8 with the exception of the offices built around the back of The Berry which have ruined the view of SJP when you're coming up through Chinatown. But mostly (especially the new quarter on the old brewery site) the developments have been positive.

Enjoyed watching your video. A good review of tower blocks in Newcastle, both those that were built and those that are long gone. You did mention that you are not keen on the exterior of Cale Cross House. The new exterior is the third time that the exterior has changed. The original exterior was black panelling! Fitted in with the soot covered buildings of the time but not after those buildings were cleaned up!

Councils should take note that most people don't want to live in a tower block. Housing should be human sized. Also as more offices allow remote working and digital storage of files, there isn't the need for huge offices. How about they build elegant buildings that compliment the surrounding buildings and not stick out like sore thumbs.

Growing up in the 80's we used to call Byker wall the lego houses. I have a totally different view on tall buildings after the Twin Towers incident and reinforced by the Grenfell Tower, I don't like them at all now

I've actually worked in the cale cross building and it's almost as troubled as when it was first built the internal refurbishment is taking months over schedule and has already changed hands back in december when the main management company ran out of funds and in general the management of work inside is in shambles the workers have a very negative look on the work and how management is handling it especially considering the fact that alot of the plasterboard panels for the walls is carried manually up the stairs which has caused a few accidents and lots of fatigue when the service elevator which is fully working and able to carry materials up and down is prohibited for some arbitrary reason

Good to hear that rather upbeat conclusion and its contents - particularly the clustering of tall buildings to make an ensemble, where the buildings aesthetically enhance each other. A lot of Newcastle's development to date (particularly in the 1970's) I would describe against the above "ensemble" concept as "snaggle-toothed", giving a disharmonious whole. Please don't destroy any more of the lovely altstadt.

skyscrapers as they exist today are hideous and are only built to fatten the pockets of the developer, we need properly designed and unique buildings of quality materials like brick, and should respond the existing historic fabric of the area

They are built because there's not much land available. You really need some geography lessons don't you .

Newcastle claim gatesheads skyline South bank of the tyne and millenium bridge, whenever see on tv or whatever is referred to as newcastle. When i have been to newcastle, the local people do not put visitors correct. No mention of gateshead at all

Very nice but not much of a skyline really. Newcastle needs some nice tall skyscrapers in the city centre.

Newcastle doesn't really have a skyline, it looks very old dated and ugly.
