When you think of the Monster Cereals from General Mills, do you think about Boo Berry? No? Well in case if you didn't know what Boo Berry is, allow me to show you the history and evolution of Boo Berry the cereal, the box, and the mascot.

Fun fact: three other monster cereals were in the concept and testing phase in the early to mid 70's (presumably for a 1975 or so release). Anna Banana (with a witch mascot), Rrrr-Orange (with a skinny monster mascot, looked very similar to Animal from the muppets), and Apple Mummy (the mascot and artwork looked very similar to Yummy Mummy, which was released years later in 1987 and borrowed Fruit Brute's formula).

9:24 According to the wikipedia entry for Peter Lorre Jr. (an impersonator of Peter Lorre of Maltese Falcon fame), he voiced Boo Berry for a time.

My father, Len Maxwell did some of these commercials. Still looking for which ones, but you can hear his old monster voices in his album Merry Monster Christmas.

I think about this issue all the time, how cereal tasted back in the 70s compared to now! It has a string blue Berry taste and not shiny and more matte in color and they were amazing!

It tasted different because the Cereal wasn't that airy puffy corn puff. It was more of a corn, oat grain texture.

Fruit Brute was lime back in the day. It didn't go cherry until it returned in 2013.

Nice piece - you really should have added a little history on Fruit Brute (Frute Brute today) and Fruity Yummy Mummy and you'd have created a really solid retrospective not just on Boo, but on the Monster Cereals in general. In answer to the taste differences in having switched from oats to corn for the cereal's taste - the answer can actually be found in two General Mills cereals that yet exist. They used to taste very much like flavored Lucky Charms (if you ever had the chocolate Lucky Charms, that was what Count Chocula used to be) whereas now the entire line much more closely resemble Trix with marbits.

Here I am in 2022 to say the box design and gimmick this year is Kaws so yeah (at least I'm pretty sure considering it's July so yeah idk why they have them already so at least for the summer season the gimmick is Kaws)

I didn’t know that Paul Frees (the voice of Boo Berry) also voiced the Ghost Host on Haunted Mansion. Coincidentally, Thurl Ravenscroft - who’s vocal fronts “Grimm Grinning Ghosts” - was also also the voice of Tony “They’re Grrrrrear” the Tiger.

From 1991-2002 I had a 1985 Z-28 Camaro. I had it painted Blueberry Pearl and it looked like a big blueberry. Personalized license plates "Boo-Bry".

I remember one of the HUGE prizes I adored as a young kid was the stickers you put on your face. Mom refused to do the iron on (Boo mom) but those stickers ended up in the weirdest places and I found them years later on things!

I grew up with Pac-Man cereal. OJ cereal and donuts cereal. All from the 80s. Thank you 1980s you are a good decade for childhood when it came to cartoons and cereal and arcade games.

Boo Berry and Count Chocula... the only monster cereals I love to eat. Boo Berry being my favorite! the "corn" version is still doable, still tastes good, given that robust blueberry taste... but, I grew up eating the original oat version, a more fuller, richer taste. I always hate it when cereal companies decide they want to fix what's not even broken... oat cereal ALWAYS tastes better than corn cereal... any given day! regardless though, Boo Berry is still my absolute, most favorite!👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐

@@mikemike4276 No, it's crap. I had the originals in the 70's and 80's...you would not believe how good they were. When you opened the box the whole kitchen smelled like blueberry. The new version doesn't even have any smell when you open it.

got a big ol family size box of franken berry from the dollar store for a buck flat. And you were right the cereal itself doesn't have much strawberry flavor. The marshmallows carry it hard to make it pretty decent. The store only had franken berry though. maybe because he is the least popular they had a bunch of extra to sell to dollar tree. Hopefully next time I go I can find some boo berry.

I recently developed a hyperfixation on fast food mascots (Thanks a lot, Jack in The Box), and it's been expanding into an overall interest in food mascots in general. Needles to say, this video gave me a new character to obsess over! I love this funny fella
