The wind passed through the lands, blowing across the sands and reaching the depths of the canyons. The sound of an eagle cry, the swirl of dust across the air. She stood there as the breeze blew across her red scarf, a blazing streak of red across the red brown land. She was but a mere traveler, crossing mountains and rivers as she took in the wonders of nature with her own eyes. The desert stretched beyond her eyes could ever see, the desolate sand having bear witness to the harsh cold at night and the scorching sun in the morning. The land welcomed her arrival with open arms, a vast expense that shone with gold in the light. A new journey had begun, encompassing her trails into a new path as she traverse among the stars. ... *This was one of the tunes I would listen to countless times at night. thirteen years. thirteen years, and he could still picture the shape of the land, the smell of the wind on those burnt summer evenings. layered in both sun and long shadow, it was a memory he could never shake, a world so familiar yet so far away that he'd begun to wonder whether it was ever real at all, or just a figment of his scattered past, torn away by violent, grasping hands and a tongue full of treacherous lies. for so long, it existed in hindsight, bitter as it was kind. a memory of nights spent with a fulll belly, in a warm home. he never thought he'd get to return to that place, but for tangents of dream or memory. if he blinked, he thought, he surely would lose them, particles of a dream ripped away and scattered with the sand, shifting seeds of a dandelion dancing on a lively breeze. but then, how could it be mistaken, the trill of a bird, calling out over the land in a tone edged in melancholy. standing at the foot of a sand dune, the sound instantly pierced him through, sharp as the blade of an arrow, and no less precise. reflexively, his head whipped to the side, sharp eyes widening to reflect an image of the sky, cloudless blue, in their inkstone depths. the first step he took was staggering, wrenched out of him by a force like fate. gravity tugged him forward, but it was the memories that made him follow, playing behind his eyes and leaving him almost sightless as he made his way up the dune. the sand pulled at him, pushing him back, turning each and every step into a trial. yet, there was nothing, not fear, not temptation, that could have pulled him back. when he reached a certain point, half-way, he abandoned all outward conventions of wisdom and calm which he had entertained previously, jerking forward as he lurched up the hill like a drowning man seeking land. behind him as he ran, showers of golden sand were stirred up, thrown behind him as if by a careless child playing in the sun. closer, closer, and his pulse refused to slow. he had to know, had to see if it was what he remembered, if this was what he thought it was. he crested the top of the dune, panting breaths dragged out of him, and forgot how to think. there, nestled amidst piles of shimmering, glowing sand, finer than the finest gold, lay a city straight from the threads of a gilded tapestry. tall, imposing walls curved around it, sheltering it from the vicious sting of the sandstorms, weathered by the sand and sun set still standing tall. it was tiered, with groups of houses pressed close together, streets taken up by a colorful flurry of activity, all pointing toward the same, central location: the golden palace, standing tall above the rest. even from this distance, he could make out the familiar architecture, eyes darting over the sight, drinking it in. he couldn't decide whether he wanted to stand there and savor it, or if he should put himself to work re-memorizing everything, every little detail stripped from him by the weight of time and pain. for the first time in what seemed like centuries, his heart felt light as air, like it could grow wings and fly him there. a gale whipped sand into his eyes, a near constant assault, but now, the stinging in his eyes came less from the burn of sand and sun, and rather, a face of fresh tears. another trill sounded from above, and he didn't have to look up to see the falcon passing overhead, watching it's shadow whip by as it raced the windfall, headed back to the place they both called home. -- i didn't mean for this to go so long (oops), but this tune deserves to be written to, so honestly, i'm only fulfilling my simple duty as a youtube commenter. thanks for the upload, this is absolutely _gorgeous._
