You continue to blow my mind with these videos. The amount of research, time, and heart you put into this is so awesome. Quality is top notch too 👌. I’ve only played the first Actraiser game and have great memories. As always I’ve learned a lot from your video. Thanks dude!
Woooohooooo!!!! 🥳🥳 I was so excited to see a video uploaded from you. And then even more when I saw it was ActRaiser. I love this series. I have been playing ActRaiser Renaissance on Switch a lot. It’s a great series. Well done sir!
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed Renaissance and might double dip and go through it again on Switch soon, haha. I’m a huge Ys fan too so it was a fun surprise to find that Quintet was formed from the people who created it.
I'm completely addicted to these videos since finding your page a few days ago (your awesome Gradius video brought me in and I immediately subscribed). I was a SEGA kid, but my cousin was the Nintendo kid. One summer we switched systems and I rented Actraiser. I played it to completion within the 2 days it was rented for. Such a fun memory. Great video!
That's awesome, thank you, glad you enjoyed this one! That's awesome that you beat Actraiser in 2 days as a kid since that game gets pretty tough towards the end. It's really awesome hearing people's stories about how they first got to play a game. I kind of went back and forth between Nintendo and Sega in the 90s so I got into both game libraries quite a bit. Funnily enough, I didn't play Actraiser until I was much older, but still loved it. Thanks again for watching!
Yes, they're great! The original intent was for this to be a full "History of Quintet" documentary, but the scope was a bit too large and I struggled a bit with the script so I ended up doing just doing ActRaiser for now. I will probably cover their other games and string them all together into one big video if people end up enjoying this one.
Great video, Chris! I could never get into ActRaiser but this video was really interesting, I didn't know about the religious aspects of the story line.
Thanks man! I definitely understand why some people weren't into the game. I didn't play it until only recently and it took some time for me to get the mechanics and controls down, but it finally ended up clicking for me. Crazy how many changes they made for the Western version!
I beat the game in 2019 only. On the WiiU, but in the Wii virtual console mode and utilizing a SNES mini controller attached to the nunchuck!😊 Marvelous game!
i absolutly loved reinasance, i just literally finished the game a few minutes ago, and im trully hoping for a remake on the same veing with AR 2. THIS is how a remake of this old games should be, its to much of hopefull tinking...but wish capcom would do the exact same thing with gargoyls quest/demon crest
Yeah, I was surprised Renaissance got so much hate in the comments. It’s far from perfect but I really enjoyed it. I’d love to see Capcom revisit the Gargoyle’s Quest series though I highly doubt that will happen anytime soon.
I hate Renaissance and that is coming from someone who's favorite game on the SNES was ActRaiser. I cannot stand the art style, they shoulda went with pixel graphics. The tower defense gets tedious because it's so often and the amount of dialogue/story they added was overkill. I just skipped thru it all. Very disappointed with that game, great video thou. I wish that sega saturn version was created back then. That coulda been good.
Fun fact- The composer made a Fillmore styled theme for the Hololive VTuber Inugami Korone called Inumore Koroneraiser due to her love of the game and it's music.
Agreed. I consider Actraiser 2 to be one of the top 5 greatest SNES games ever made. No matter how many times I play it I can always get better as their is just so much depth to the combat.
They’re such a great developer! I sadly haven’t played Terranigma yet, but I plan to remedy that very soon. I’m very interested to see the connections between it, Illusion of Gaia/Time, and Soul Blazer.
such a great job covering this masterpiece! The SNES game will always have a special place in my heart, one of the first games I played for the system and I never get tired of it. The music is incredible
Thanks dez!! I’m pretty new to the game, but I really enjoyed finally going through it. Renaissance was actually pretty good and worth checking out if you loved the original. 👍
I've only heard the soundtrack from this game, specifically Fillmore. I just wanna say that this game has some really disturbing, unsettling imagery in it, like Satan, for example. I'm glad I didn't play this when I was younger because I'm sure that Satan's design would've given me nightmares.
Having grown up playing these games, it was a real treat and delight to find this wonderfully assembled retrospective on ActRaiser. Thank you!!! You deserve way more subs for your hard work! I sometimes nickname myself "ActRaiser" in other online games, and you'd be surprised how many people love shooting the breeze about the series and Quintet's glory days. I'd like to add that for fans of this series, I recently discovered an indie game directly inspired by ActRaiser called Smelter. It has lots of snarky tongue-in-cheek humour, an in-depth simulation mode similar to Renaissance, but its action mode plays very much like Mega Man X if you can believe that. On top of that, it's also based on Judeo-Christianity and the main hero is Eve from the Book of Genesis of all people, haha. Anyway, this old gamer thanks you again for this video. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words and am happy you enjoyed the video! I actually had a friend recommend me Smelter as well a few months ago after had been talking about ActRaiser. This just reminded me that I still need to check it out, haha. Thanks again for watching!
Thanks Vito, really appreciate that! I’ve been doing YT long enough to know that not every video will be a winner, but with most of my documentaries taking between 350-500 hours to produce, it makes things extra frustrating and defeating. Thanks a ton for the support though!
@@RewindArcade If you ever want to chat RU-vid strategy, let me know. I think one problem you may have run into is that the Actraiser logo is illegible at smaller sizes, making your thumbnail less than ideal. Always consider that many people are watching on mobile devices and your thumbnail will be very small in certain locations like search and recommended.
Man, I wish it was on there. I imagine either Square Enix doesn't want to license it to Nintendo or Nintendo has no desire to license it from SE. Fingers cross it gets added one of these days!
Right?? Would love to know more about it. The crazy thing is Miyazaki said the game was about 70% finished when they scrapped it. It’s not really clear how much of its assets were reused for ActRaiser, but I imagine it must’ve been a substantial amount.
I think renaissance completely ruined the game. No fucking reason to turn the angel into a anime child for nonces, and the characters they added were complete weeb trash, absolutely incompatible with the game the remake is based on. Not sure it the remake sold well but it sparks bad news for any of the other quintet games that could be remade
ActRaiser is easily one of my favorite game franchises for its inventiveness and willingness to take a risk as you said. You expertly covered the history of this unique series and went into painstaking depth with details I've never seen elsewhere, well done.
Thanks so much, appreciate you watching! It really was such a unique experience and unlike anything else out there. It still breaks my heart to this day that Quintet stopped doing original projects and became more of a 3rd party support studio before eventually shutting down.
Man, actraiser was a real WTF game for me back when I was a kid. I remember me and a cousin playing it over a summer break and just having no idea what the hell was going on. All we had was the cart and it was the 90s. We were just two dorks without internet.
Man, I could only imagine, haha! I never played the game as a kid so looking at the city building segments in magazines was really strange and confusing since I'd never seen that in a platformer.
@@RewindArcade To be fair to us, we understood the platforming but the "simulation" part was over our nine and ten year old heads. We only ever made it to Bloodpool before giving up. I think FF and DQ were more our speed. Anyway, cool channel, man. I really like your content. The Ghosts and Goblins video is AMAZING. Thanks for making stuff like this!!!
Great video! I've always loved actraiser 1 and 2 since i was a young child. I absolutely loved Renaissance and shed tears when i first booted it up. Unfortunately since its release i havent put the time into a second playthrough of it and thats because my first playthrough of it being about 20 hours long. Thats a pretty massive difference compared to the first games 1-3 hour playthrough.
Thank you! They definitely added quite a bit of extra content in Renaissance which makes it tough to do a quick run through like you could in the original.
I would love to see a video on Quintet's Action RPGs: Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia/Time, and Terranigma. I've also heard that The Granstream Saga on PS1 night be related, either made by some of the same people, or a spiritual successor.
So funny story, this video originally started out as "The History of Quintet" before I decided to tone down the scope quite a bit and only cover the Actraiser games. The plan was to continue on with the rest of the games, but unfortunately this video flopped pretty hard so I put everything on the back burner for now. May come back to it sometday though. The Granstream Saga is made by Shade which was a side studio created by Quintet to allow them to work with other publishers without damaging their relationship with others (presumably Nintendo). I believe Kouji Yokota was put in charge of Shade. He had also worked on Actraiser and Illusion of Gaia/Time too. It's a really interesting history with a somewhat unfortunate ending. Anyways, thanks so much watching!
Really Great Video as usual Sir Crisps! For whatever reason I didn't get notified on it when it dropped. With that, I didn't know they made Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma! They made really good games back to back in the 90s. Shame what ended up happening to the company.
You always take on the best subjects :D. I remember seeing footage of Actraiser for the first time in a promotional video a Spanish magazine gave out to promote the launch of the snes. You could see the beginning of Bloodpool, the statue reviving, and the soundtrack... it all blew my mind. I was lucky to play the import early, since it was released so late in Europe as you mentioned, and I also played Soul Blazer around that launch time, all weekend rentals. I definitely could see the connection and loved how different those games felt to other games back then. And I recorded Fillmore with a tape put in front of the tv lol... I am crazy about this theme to this day, and just being able to listen to its remake made getting A. Renaissance worth it. I loved knowing more about Quintet, so they came from Falcom...also loved knowing about how Yuzo Koshiro ended up working in this game. I always thought the Y's main field theme has a strong Fillmore vibe to it, and I guess the vibe was the same in Yuzo's mind since he was working with the same people basically. Thank you for making these, they're a joy to watch.
Thanks so much, really happy you enjoyed it!It’s awesome that you’re such a big fan and got to play the import early. I love hearing about people holding tape recorders up to their TV since I did the same thing, haha. I also was completely surprised that Quintet originated from Falcom. I’m a huge Ys fan so it was really interesting to learn that’s where everything originated. Thanks for watching!!
Really enjoy a lot of Quintet's games. ActRaiser being one of em. I really loved the remake. I understand the dislike of the siege mode but it clicked with me. The update last month was pretty good with making it play like the original during the platforming stages. Really hope we get more remakes of Quintet's stuff.
I agree, I thought Renaissance was a lot better than many reviewers made it out to be and the Siege mode was really fun. The update released after I had already finished the script and had begun editing so it sadly didn't get mentioned. Hopefully Soul Blazer sees a remake next!
The remake looks cool. One thing that is never mentioned about the action segments of the original is that they are _extremely_ stiff-feeling. If the remake manages to fix that then it's almost certainly worth giving a play. This was recommended to me on Twitter! Great vid, you earned a sub.
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!! Yeah, the original’s platforming sections can sometimes be a bit clunky to control. Renaissance’s action stages definitely play much more smoothly, especially with the added attacks and dodge movement.
Another great video, thanks! While I've never been a big Actraiser fan, I do enjoy the soundtrack very much. Gotta check out the soundtrack of the Renaissance remake!
Dope stuff. I remember when I first played ActRaiser. I had let my friend borrow Donkey Kong Country 3 and he let me borrow this game because I hadn't heard of it before. I ended up loving it. The mix of styles was definitely unique. I don't think I had played a city building game before that point.
Thanks!! I think a lot people were first introduced to city building gameplay with ActRaiser (and SimCity on SNES too) since those type of games were mainly on PC and not home consoles. Was DKC3 any good? I never actually played that one. 😅
@@RewindArcade DKC3 is a great little platformer honestly. On par with DKC1, maybe a little better in terms of content (more secrets), but DKC2 is still the best.
@@RewindArcade If I may, I would like to suggest you to make a video on Master of Monsters, from Sega. It also has a great soundtrack and have influenced a lot of titles. Herzog Zwei is also a great game to check on. Congratulations for the channel!
Definitely, I was actually going to make a post asking people what series or games they wanted to see covered on the channel. Thanks for the recommendations!
There are technically only two official ActRaiser games. Renaissance is the 3rd entry in the series, but it’s just a remake of the first game. Solo Crisis on the Sega Saturn is more of a spiritual successor and not exactly part of the ActRaiser franchise.
Thank you! I got a lot of flack from people for liking the remake. It’s certainly not perfect, but I feel it’s far from the train wreck many make it out to be.
I agree with you. I think the remake is marvelous, I just got pulled away with other things but I have not forgotten about it. It's been on my mind recently and awhile ago. Your video popped up and I was like "Man, I gotta finish that remake." It was fun to hear about the development and I like how you showed off the remake. I was born in 86 and I remember playing the original when I was real little. I still have that cartridge. It was a fine remake, Just like FFVIIR is. People are going to hate no matter what. After I finish Tales of Arise then I am going to play through - Crisis Core Remake, FFVIIR and FFIV Ultima then FFVI T-Edition. Before I play ToA though, I am gonna go check on my town in the new Actraiser. 🍻
Great video again😃 Yuzo Koshiro was really a fantastic composer🥰 now that such composer as him and Nobuo Uematsu are less involved in the industry, I am looking forward to young composer like Yasunori Nishiki
Man I really need to play this. It's rare in this time to see two big elements fused together like this. not only that, seriously blending a great artstyle and wonderful music. This game deserves to be played. Thanks for filling me in on the rich history!
@@tonymarsala6939 Appreciate it man! There are plenty of other video game documentaries already on the channel too if you feel like giving any of those a watch. 👍
