As a side note to the Beauty Pair, they also influenced the "Dirty Pair" franchise. In fact, the organization they worked for, the 3WA (World Welfare Works Association), took its name from the World Women's Wrestling Association. You want proof of Akira Hokuto's toughness? Check out her tag match with Yumiko Hotta against the Red Typhoons (Kazue Nagahori & Yumi Ogura) for the WWWA World Tag Team Championship. During the finish of the first fall (this was a two-out-of-three falls match), Hokuto (then wrestling under her real name of Hisako Uno) took a Tombstone Piledriver off the middle rope and broke her neck...and she still finished the match, sometimes holding her head in place with her hands. And here's to another 250 episodes!
Congratulations on 250 episodes James. I've been following since 2013 and have seen every episode since the beginning. Keep it up brother. As far as favorite episodes of the series, the ones I recall loving include: Vader in WCW 1993, The Hogan/Sting Starrcade '97 Rivalry, Heroes of Wrestling, The WCW Disney TV Tapings, TNA: The Asylum Years, Kurt Angle Career Recap, The Rise & Fall of the NWA, History of Lucha Underground, Undertaker Career Recap, The Four Horsemen, History of 6:05, Prime Time Wrestling and History of the WWE Championship.
If I had to pick my faveoire AJW matches, I would go with: * Akira Hokuto Vs Shinobu Kandori- Dream Slam * The Manami Toyota & Yoshiyo Yamada Vs Dynamite Kansai & Mayumi Ozaki trilogy (Dream Rush, Dream Slam II & St Battle Final 1993) * Bull Nakano Vs Aja Kong (Steel Cage - Wrestlemarinepiad '90 & Dream Rush) * Manami Toyota Vs Kyoko Inoue (Wrestle Marinepiad '92 & The 60 minute draw from '95) * Manami Toyota Vs Akira Hokuto - Destiny '95 * Bull Nakano Vs Akira Hokuto - January 4, 1991 Really wanna watch more of the 80s stuff. One thats most hailed is Chigusa Nagayo Vs Devil Masami from August 22, 1985 from the Budokan
Happy 250th episode, James. This topic is very interesting. Aja Kong, Bull Nakano and The Jumping Bomb Angels are the only ones I have heard of. And it sucks how in All Japan Women's Wrestling, once you reach 25, you're done which is absolutely stupid in my opinion because number 1, there's always a certain age that wrestler, male or female, can reach, and then if they want, they can retire on their own terms, number 2, injuries are one of the main reasons wrestlers retire. As I said this topic was very interesting and to be honest I didn't know anything about Japanese women's wrestling until today. I must say, your knowledge on wrestling regarding the history of a promotion, belts, wrestling events and all that is really outstanding. This might be very obvious, but it seems you do a ton of research regarding everything I mentioned. Keep up the good work.
I always try and do as much research as possible when it comes to whatever topic I talk about And in the case of this topic, I also had help on how to pronounce the names of the wrestlers Thanks for the support
Even though the age restriction was implemented, most wrestlers either got injured or simply got cut. But ultimately from my research its true goal by the Matsunagas was they found it better to cut their stars cause they found it easier to make a new star and pay them at the much lower rate. Most would usually quit before 25 anyways. No competition in their marketplace also contributed. Once jwp and others started they immediately got rid of the "so called cultural rule." *Ajw destiny podcast*
A lot of the major stars came out of retirement for other promotions and for those that didn't, many would have retired anyway. Even in todays joshi scene it's common for girls to quit suddenly for any number of reasons (see Himeka from Stardom!)
WHAT ABOUT MY FRIEND...MIMI HAGIWARA!! LOL (yes, i know her...) she was a top star as well...but you know that already i'm sure...soo many stars in AJW those years. there were quite a few you "left out" ...no worries, you got the bulk of the popular ones. LOL thanks!!
I knew she was a top star; another of the cross over stars during the era of The Beauty Pair & Mach Fumiake(who was another one I didn't talk about) Some of the other notable stars I didn't talk about; The Dynamite Girls(Jumbo Hori & Yukari Omori), Dump Matsumoto, Double Inoue(Kyoko & Takako Inoue...no relation), Mima Shimoda, Tomoko Watanabe, Mayumi Ozaki, Cutie Suzuki, Chaparita Asari, and so many others Also some of the notable foreign wrestlers: Monster Ripper, Madusa, Amazing Kong
Happy about you doing from the vault and thank you james and also my friend too and oh yeah tomorrow is scott and another person too my birthday is tomorrow too.
WWE, and more than that Stephanie and HHH, deserves a lot of credit for giving women's wrestling a real spotlight in America. Tiffany Stratton just came up and it looks like Giulia will sign with them too. They continue to stay committed to adding top talent to the roster and, unlike AJW, they actually have competition. It's easy to build a stacked stable when you're not only the only game in town, you're pretty much the only game on the planet. I love classic AJW but I'm also excited about the future in WWE.
What if a future episode of From the Vault would cover the career of a particular Japanese wrestler and these guys would be perfect to take center stage Mitsuharu Misawa- The Emerald God Keiji Mutoh- The Enigmatic Artist Jushin Thunder Liger- The Super Junior Icon Kenta Kobashi- Heart and Determination Hiroshi Tanahashi- New Japan's Savior Kazuchika Okada- Golden Rainmaker
As much as I would love to do episodes like this more often, it's really hard given how Japanese copyright goes You show anything New Japan(past or present), you risk getting it taken down; don't know if it's the same for All Japan(past or present) Until things change & it's less strict when it comes to what can be used, episodes on Japanese topics are gonna be really rare
All Japan Women's Pro Wrestling easily produced the greatest women's matches ever. Next to the WWE Ruthless Aggression Era women's wrestling and TNA Knockouts Era, All Japan Women's Pro Wrestling did the Women's Revolution right with great feuds and in ring quality. As much I love the WWF Attitude Era women's wrestling for the entertainment and star/drawing power, All Japan Women's Pro Wrestling was a great alternative during the late 90's and early 00's.
Ah Manami, truly the most overrated wrestler of all time, nothing makes me cringe more than people saying she was even in same stratosphere as Hokuto in the ring, let alone better. Wish you mentioned Kyoko Inoue as wrestlers of note, I think she is the most palatable for those who are unfamiliar with Japanese wrestling in general and of course super fun to watch. Good video
I have four questions for you. 1. Do you think during the edge and Rey Mysterio fued in 2008- they should have mentioned their time as WWE tag team champions ? 2. If you could have A threesome with either Stephanie McMahon and miss tessmacher or Stephanie McMahon and Bailey-which one ? 3. What is your favorite Iron Shiek moment ? 4. And what did you think about the Raw intro from 2002-2006 ?
