There is no evidence of Whitehead ever flying in 1901. He claimed to have flown 5 miles, but could not provide witnesses. Interviewed years later, his story had a lot of discrepancies and contradictions. When asked to show his designs, he produced drawings that he admitted were not of the craft that he claimed to have flown, and were technologically outdated already in 1901.

When New Zealand produces the slightest shred of evidence beyond old stories repeated as bar talk, then aviation historians will start to take that claim seriously.

No mention of Clement Ader who made the first take off of a manned engined machine either. Also no mention of Louis Bleriot crossing the channel in 1909 with the first thing really looking like an actual plane (Bleriot XI). Aviation was invented progressively by many pioneers.

No mention of Sir George Cayley either, who, apart from being responsible for the foundations for the science of aeronautics and the first manned fixed wing flight, he also invented the tensioned wire spoked wheel, better known as the bicycle wheel. Something that allowed the Wright brothers to undertake their experiments.

No Leonardo DaVinci drew some designs but never built. There was an Inventor and builder in Bridgeport Connecticut who beat the Wright Bros. by 2 years and flew as early as 1899. His name was Gustave Whitehead. I met his family in Connecticut and there’s a Museum to his honor in Germany.

From what I understand his designs wouldn't have actually worked. Still innovative and should be remembered like all the other failed flying machines of the late 1800s - early 1900s

Going down a track and crashing is not defined as flying.

Thats beyond really bad, The aircraft was launched with the aid of a catapult into strong winds maybe 20 MPH. Longest flight was like 800 feet in 59 seconds, thats not sustained flight. Subsequent flights of replicas could not sustain flight either. Believe what you want i dont care.

"_ Neither Wright weighed near to 200 pounds, and you’re omitting many essential factors. For example, what was the engine’s torque and gearing? What was the propeller efficiency, and the aircraft’s coefficients of lift and drag? What is the computed effect of ground effect? If you can’t reckon these and all essential factors, then you’re just guessing. _”Thats beyond really bad.”_ By what standard is it “bad”? And winds only affect takeoff distance, but they are not the hinge point for taking off at all. (Low density altitude) Attempts with replicas have been made in less favorable atmospheric conditions (higher density altitude), by pilots who greatly out-weighed the Wrights and who had none of the brother’s extensive practice and experience with the unwieldy aircraft. That no modern flights have matched the originals in length/duration is not only unsurprising, but it says nothing conclusive about the abilities of the original aircraft. _”Believe what you want i dont care”_ That’s an odd thing to say for someone who makes claims about “later tests”, but is unwilling or unable to provide evidence when requested. You should ponder your urge to make technical conclusions based on hunches instead of technical analysis. Your weight-to-horsepower figure is meaningless while devoid of context. Consider this real-world comparison: the gate locks of the Panama canal weight 745 tons each, but before modernization they were swung with ease by a 40-horsepower motor each. That’s 37,250 pounds/HP…but gee, that seems impossible, so it must *_be_* impossible, right? Friend, I hope you get the point, that the answer always lies in real analysis, not guesswork.

@@cardinalRG I was just using round numbers so OK< say 500 pounds for aircraft, 150 pounds for pilot and gas, 650 divided by 12 gives power loading of 54 pounds/HP, Do you feel more special now? Cessna 152 is about 15 pounds /HP. Come on man you must be an exceptional pilot to be able to fly something that under powered. joking. So what pre-tell makes you an aviation authority, besides having a big mouth. LOL. When i was 15 , 50 years ago, i soloed in a J-3 piper cub. A very low powered airplane. 1200 pounds /65 HP = 18 pounds /HP. so when i say 54 pounds is beyond bad thats not guessing, thats knowing more then i want to mouth off about like you.

I encourage you to do some better research, friend. The 1903 Wright Flyer was not a glider, nor were the 1904 and 1905 Flyers, all of which flew before the 14-bis left the ground.

Santos Dumont created the Airplane, Wright Brothers created the Argry Birds

​@@VitorCG1 Brazil has created nothing more than a very poor educational system that brainwashes its citizens with government propaganda. The Wrights flew a controlled powered flight in 1903, it was witnessed, documented, photographed, and published in the media all at that time. That Brazilians refusal to accept that just demonstrates their national ignorance, because they cannot refute the proof so they just pretend it doesn't exist.
