Though brickfilming activity was increasing in the 1990s, there do not seem to be brickfilms from the decade with the same wide recognition as the most well known ones from the previous decades. With this video, in addition to covering the general history of LEGO filmmaking in the decade, I aim to shed light on the best 1990s brickfilms in the hope that they will receive more attention.

Thanks for including a tiny snippet of my work here! Finally watched this and found it all really fascinating. I really liked how you kept emphasizing that most brickfilms made in this era would have been low frame rate experiments by kids. That definitely describes my work during the decade. I need to comb my parent's basement for a VHS tape with my earliest works on it...
@sillypenta

Thank you! I'm glad that emphasis came across, because I was concerned that focusing mostly on the best stuff could give a bit of an inaccurate impression. I do hope you can eventually find the earliest work you have!

My friend and I watched that Corporal Dan video a good 15 times a day back in 2000-2002iish and years later around 2012 we really wanted to see it again since we'd both quote it, but it was an inside joke for us since nobody else we ever talked to knew what the hell it was and assumed we made it up. Nether could remember where he found the video, had no idea who made it, when it was made and couldn't really find info on it since over time I thought it was "chopper dan" since he was in a helicopter. Thank you for giving me the means to recover a part of my childhood.

I love the movies like "The Parasite" with all those big sets and all made of LEGO! Even The Magic Portal is awesome. But i also love the pirate commercials, so damn good! A true inspiration! The other 90's VHS camcorder animations remind me of my first lego brickfilms, made with Movie Maker in the 2000's, where i would shoot a picture and shrink the length of the frame the shortes possible, so that they would move 1 FPS ahaha

It's important to look back, learn & to see how much/far we've achieved with brickfilming as a whole. I really do hope that this will teach & inspire future community members.

I am amazed you even have a screencap of True Peril 19:58. I remember when one of the animators joined the Brickfilms forums showing Peril In the Dark Ages and Peril in Space. I loved them! both were ludicrous. They were on Google Video at the time, which is now no more. I was a fool not to download them.
@sillypenta
@sillypenta 5 лет назад
Thanks for sharing the story. I didn't expect anyone watching this to be familiar with that, and I'm not sure I even remember how I came across it. Maybe one day I can track down one of the creators and see if they still have the films
@ewanfleck
@ewanfleck 5 лет назад
One of them claimed the other films they made before Dark Ages were poor but I would still love to see them. Dark Ages and Space are both pretty nuts. There is a part in Peril in Space where an alien race needs to prove their worth in the format of a quiz show run by the insane human space commander. They fail by showing off that they have transparent sewage pipes on their planet.
@sillypenta
@sillypenta 5 лет назад
It sounds like they were substantial films for the time. I would have assumed they were just shorts/tests. I will definitely try to track them down
@ewanfleck

Please do! They were beefy films. I think both of those were around 15 - 20 minutes. I would try track them myself but I haven't got any brickfilms to my name.

Oh no just when I thought the world has surely been spared the knowledge that I once created the weird mash-up of Star Wars, Salt Lake City, and Eyes Wide Shut, i found it referenced in a video of the dark ages of brick films :D. This was a fantastic watch and yeah I had to actually drop the first 2 films off my website in order to make room for Salt Lake Spaceport. Good job putting this together, I wasn't aware of anything prior to my stuff except Starlego because (like you said) sharing was not easy online and then after I did Lego Menace I finally started connecting to a couple other brick filmmakers. So it is nice to watch what was happening on tape prior to online. I did actually make a trailer of SL Spaceport to try to hype it up as it was taking so long to make. I still have it. I think it's better than the actual film :)
@sillypenta
@sillypenta 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment; it's great to hear from you. I would be interested in seeing that trailer, if you want to upload it. I am curious if you remember what the 6 films listed on LEGO Compulsion were, or if you remember how you got in contact with Russ Jensen, who is also listed as being involved with that site.
@kellyjeffery2897
@kellyjeffery2897 2 года назад
@@sillypenta So... here's the thing :D I don't remember anything about Lego Compulsion. A friend sent me to a wiki last year and was like "hey your old lego movies are mentioned here and there is a page about you" and when I read about Lego Compulsion I told him it must be a mistake of the author. Looking again at web archive which your footage also shows, it's very clear that I must have done it as my name is all over and there is mentions of it from my xmission page. So I guess it's true! :D I was like 21 and always loved Lego and me and my friend Russ (Gatrell) really liked film and I thought I wanted to maybe try to get into film programs and after finding Starlego I was like yeah let's try this out. I didn't know anyone else. People (I assume Russ Jensen too) were contacting me like "hey I made one too check it out" and I enjoyed building sites at the time so I must have thought it would be a good idea to have some sort of directory for these :) but luckily better people came along like Brickfilms lol. I had a lot of fun doing them and wanted to do more but my personal life got away from me a bit and what would end up being my real career took off. Over time I think the weirdness of Salt Lake Spaceport plus a lot of ambitious things that didn't work out ended up being a huge source of embarrassment for me (but my friends were loving it and sharing it and thankfully kept copies of it cuz i lost mine including the uncompressed version.) It's funny that in the context of everything it has a small place in the history of sharing these online.
@sillypenta
@sillypenta 2 года назад
@@kellyjeffery2897 Thanks for all the info. I hope you are proud of Salt Lake Spaceport now; it is considered to be one of the best brickfilms of the 90s. Before I had tracked down a copy of it, it was one the most desirable "missing" brickfilms, as people who have been in the community for a long time would still sometimes mention it. I did search for you online and tried any old email addresses I could find, but I never managed to get in contact, so it took me by surprise to see you commenting here haha. I eventually managed to find that somebody had uploaded all three of your brickfilms to Dailymotion in 2006, which is how I finally acquired them.
@kellyjeffery2897
@kellyjeffery2897 2 года назад
@@sillypenta Thank you for the kind words. I was debating on outing myself or not when I saw this ;) . I am definitely "over myself" about it now and I think I struggle to appreciate anything i've done artistically. The films were so fun and now I have two LEGO obsessed girls that who knows, maybe I will help them make some stop motion at some point. :D

I can already think of 2000's brickfilms to discuss for next episode: Nathan Wells: Beast, History of the Minifig Zach Macias: Mirrored Perspective Doug Vandegrift: America - Outlawed, Pirates The Day Brickfilms.com Crashed Spite Your Face Productions: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Han Solo Affair Maxime Marion: Henri & Edmond Most of the films by the Brothers Boyle (Captain Bulldog, Philosopher Shale, TwoBit WiseGuy)
