@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries , although not an official release, there is now a very impressive port of the NES/FDS version of Castlevania that is called Intellivania that is, as you guessed, a port of the game for, of all systems, the Mattel Intellivison. You might want to check that game out, as well as update this video, to reflect that information.
Dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me atm then you can watch all the new series on InstaFlixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend for the last couple of days =)
I remember playing castlevania on a tabletop arcade in pizza hut, back when pizza hut was cool and gave out land before time puppets and Alf puppets! I was horrible at castlevania but it's spooky atmosphere kept me coming back to shell out more of my parents quarters lol. There's always been a mystery to that game in my mind mostly because I couldn't even beat the first stage when I was a kid. I recently bought the castlevania collection on ps4 and beat the first stage but then I just saved the game and quit playing for some reason like I didn't wanna progress any further because it felt like I had already beaten more than I'd ever seen as a kid lol. Anyway, I gotta get back to playing it one of these days! I'll stop rambling now and watch the video, this should be good! 👍
I remember those puppets.... thanks for bringing back those memories...... I now remember going to Pizza Hut and when dining in, the waiter would ask “smoking or no smoking”.... good times
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I always enjoy your videos, great trip down memory lane. Good memories from skipping class in High school to go to the arcade haha
There was a stand-alone Castlevania cocktail table at Putt Putt back in 1989-90. I thought the NES = arcade, but the arcade version timer counts down to 0 at a much faster rate.
Thanks man, I will not say too much but thanks man your channel is my favorite of my subscriptions, your voice and story telling plus your visuals and research are the best I have seen in youtube, that is my opinion.
Definitely the Castlevania video game series were amazing and it's part of my childhood I love all those games especially Castlevania Symphony of the Night that game was just amazing and phenomenal to play.
I stumbled upon this video on my youtube feed doing a random search on Castlevania. This is a pretty good video. My main gripe about Castlevania is that when I prepare to jump over a pit or water, a Medusa head, small bat, the crow, or the big bat just happens to be in my jump path...every. single. time.
Seriously though, this game is the apex of the platforming genre. You put together a great story, nice graphics, recognizable icons from the horror movie franchises, one incredible score, and then keep it arcade style where it's a straight line from start to finish and you have the perfect storm that is Castlevania.
Thanks for this wonderful amazing video, i enjoyed every second of it!! The first 3 nes games were so fantastic to me but super castelvania 4 is my all time favorite, i had goosebumps when i saw it, i remember there was an invisible ladder just before the battle against dracula, i broke my head for an hour trying to find it 😂 oh the good old days...... Thanks again, glad to know you are safe and sound, cheers from Guatemala 🇬🇹 💯 points to this video 💯 👏👏👏👏
That is exactly how I felt when I saw super Castlevania 4 for the first time. The graphics and special effects were amazing not to mention the soundtrack. Thank you for watching, cheers from the USA stay safe
@@ivanscissorhands2008 To be more accurate it's not even part 4, much like the 3rd NES game is not part 3. A more appropriate title for Castlevania 3 is sorta what they called the 3rd Gameboy game, Castlevania Legend, since the original Japanese name is Akumajou Densetsu, or Demon Castle Legend. The first NES game, the MSX2 game, the arcade game, Super IV on SNES, and the X68000 game are all called Akumajou Dracula in Japan. They are all different versions of Simon's first quest. I guess you couldn't canonically put all 5 of these games in the chronology. While Castlevania II is meant to be a sequel to both the first NES game and the MSX2 game, it's also technically a sequel to the other 3 versions too. Castlevania II is the sequel to Castlevania IV.
I remember seeying castlevania for the msx 2, playing in the window of a gameshop in Rotterdam. I only had the msx 1 so i couldnt play it. Later i played lots of castlevania's. Super Castkevania IV on the snes being my favorite. Great history lessons about Castlevania, 🙏thank you. I will watch all parts😁
Intense rivalry in similar output between Konami & Capcom, upping the ante in sheer quality: Ghouls 'n' Ghosts vs Castlevania, Gryzor vs Bionic Commando, Final Fight vs Crime Fighters (being able to plug people with a pistol in essentially a hand to hand beat 'em up was sick fun in the latter) absolute giants!! What a time to be alive...😌
This channel is absolutely perfect, thanks for making the great, detailed content that you do. Btw, that hallway just before the battle with the grim reaper/death in castlevania one... holy shitballs.
I love your videos so much. Keep up the great work!!! You're getting me in the mood for Halloween. Maybe talk about The Haunting on the Genesis? IT's a classic game where you play as a ghost and you have to scare people out of the house. It has amazing graphics, some lovable flaws, and a unique gameplay we have never seen since.
Excellent video about one of the greatest video game franchises of all time. The emulated version of Haunted Castle was also previously available on disc for the PS2 only in Japan, named Oretachi Gese Zoku: Akumajo Dracula.
Amazing video as always, I got the arcade version of Castlevania recently on an arcade collection on PC and most of the others on another Castlevania collection, all still good games. Great stuff Patman.
1:35 "Konami producers were forbidden to include their names in the credits, for fear of other companies stealing them away" Heaven forbid Konami actually provide a competitive wage to keep their good employees around.
Even though I never played this game (and don't even recall ever having seen it played other than here and maybe some other review) it still brings back some cool memories. Other teens were always talking about it and the game package & comicbook ad art (along with the name and concept) really caught my imagination. The icing on the cake was having the (annoyingly unheroic) hero be a regular every Saturday morning in Captain N, Game Master. Even the castle and "Dracula" (a yellow tuxedoed one?) appeared once. If they'd only done a serious take on this. An Indiana Jones type vs the Universal Monsters on TV or movies (live or cartoon) would've had me glued to it.
Sweet I was just wondering today at work , when are we gonna see another PAT Vid!! Heck yeah watching now! Liking and sharing , to help the little channel grow!🖖
What an amazing! I love castlevania and its definitely a great time to bring it back into the light for October. The vids from Japan are awesome and I haven't seen a lot of them before. Great job with the vid and I can't wait until part 2! Happy Halloween 🎃
My experience with the Castlevania games was a bit different; I was living in a small, isolated town with not much to do for entertainment when I discovered Simon's Quest. I played through the whole game by trial and error since I rented the game from the local video shop, and there were no instructions to be had. In fact, I rented the NES and CVSQ so much that I could have easily bought my own console and game LOL. Nevertheless, thank you Patman for this interesting and educational look back on these classic games, and I'm looking forward to the next instalment.
LOL, that's hilarious. We didn't have a whole lot of money growing up either and I was lucky to have a NES So I would just rent games and try to beat them in one night before had to take them back :-) a lot of times I did
The greatest franchise of all time. (just avoid netflix, though). Simon's Quest was an eye opener for me as a kid since every other game I had played before that one you had to start all over without passwords, and if you walked too far the screen would not let you back. I found it really immersive to walk wherever I wanted to and discover secrets. I had the Tiger Electronic wristwatch game of Simon's Quest, and wore it everywhere. It's still on my shelf today.
Castlevania is one of the best franchises. I had the original two games and played the Snes version way back when. Great Nes/Snes games. The best versions being the heavy gothic early versions.
You can always count on a great zinger or two in these videos. Dude is always peppering his videos with funny as hell lines. It's the best part of this channel in my opinion
Funny thing. Castlevania almost had a Saturday Morning Cartoon series. Of course, it had barely anything to do with the games other than having Dracula and other monsters in it. Instead of Simon or any of the Belmonts, it was modern day (80's) teenagers exploring haunted castles. I forget where the concept art can be found, but certainly something I'm glad didn't happen.
Castlevania always had stellar music since day one. That was super important back in the 8-bit days though. I think it really helped these games stand out among the top tier games of the time, and I don't think that most people in 2020 really give the importance to an excellent soundtrack that it deserves.
I love these games so much, I always thought simons quest was the coolest because of the way it would go from daylight to darkness just like that. I honestly think if not for the Castlevania series there would have been no Resident Evil or Silent Hill franchises.
It was “Super Castlevania 4” probably the best game for the SNES where it moved to 16-bit. Good music, better gameplay. I used to played that game and it was terrific! I beat the entire game and that was it.
I always loved the world design & monsters in the Castlevania games. It was only up until Lords of Shadow i deviated from that feeling but still liked them all. Super Castlevania 1V is gotta be my favorite though
If you want to play an arcade port of Castlevania, then I suggest playing Vs Castlevania. Its an arcade port of the OG NES classic with slightly brighter graphics and a higher difficulty of an already hard game. Its on the Nintendo E Shop under Arcade Archives and its worth the buy. Its much better than Haunted Castle.
Omg! When I woke up and opened RU-vid and saw "The history of Castlevania" and realized it was a Patman video I about lost my mind! My favorite IP covered by my favorite RU-vidr? Hell yeahhhhh!!! I'm so excited! Yay!!!
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries loved it!! Can't wait to hear what ya have to say about the 2 last gen games!! Waiting, just not patiently 😂
The MSX game was released in Europe under the Vampire Killer name, in Japan it's Akumajou Dracula like the nes title. It's easier than the Nes title but you only have 3 guys to beat it.
x68000 is not "cd-based hardware", and the game shipped on a duo of floppies like most games on the platform. Also I feel its a big omission in this video to not discuss the superior japanese soundtrack for Castlevania III on NES. It's some of the best music in the series.
Haunted Castle was not the only arcade spin-off of the Castlevania series. The original Castlevania was also released in the arcades under Vs. Castlevania as apart of arcade ports of NES classics (this also includes Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros). The gameplay has slightly updated graphics but still faithful to the NES but is noticeably on a higher difficulty than the already difficult NES game. Other than that, the gameplay is exactly the same. Its available on the Nintendo E shop under Arcade Archives and its worth the purchase. Even if your spending a lot of virtual quarters to beat the game (in which I have not because of how hard it is).
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I actually played Haunted Castle as apart of the Konami Arcade Classics and I thought it was okay. I like it for its soundtrack, bright 8 arcade graphics for it's time, and it plays like an old school Castlevania game. The controls are a bit stiff but I got use to it. The only things I did not like are some of the enemies cheap shots, some hazards cause unexpected cheap deaths, the fact you only get a single health bar and a limited amount of continues, a bit anti-climatic boss fights, and the damn annoying stupid bats that too small to hit and cause multiple cheap shots. As flawed as it is, I do have a soft spot for it and it's the first Castlevania game I have actually beaten, of course with a shit ton of virtual quarters input it in. I like the game but I wouldn't say I love it.
