Monique doesn't look horrible. Look at her facial features. She's actually pretty. If you don't like big women, that's your preference but you seem to have something against them.

There are much prettier black actresses than Monique. I find Queen Latifah pretty and she is a big woman.

I think what he is getting at is when white people promote their image in the media, they mostly present the best versions of themselves but when we get the chance; we uplift lighter women and downgrade darker women by casting fat women, which be honest is NOT cute and not the best to offer. I have been saying for years that we as blacks can be our worst enemies. My entire, life only black people made me feel ugly. Not all, but enough to leave a scare that I had to heal. The majority of the white people, however, are always complimenting me on how beautiful my skin is and its radiance. It's so sad because at this point it seems like we are the ones pushing this standard and destroying ourselves. Don't get me wrong, I was always able to find men of ALL races to date me and my husband is white but BM always had this underlying issue deep down it seemed. One dude actually told me that I would look better or in his words "bad" if I was a "redbone". Another dude, just couldn't understand why my legs were lighter than my face. Way to many issues with our people and it's exhausting if you are a dark skinned black woman.
I remember being a young girl and Prince came out all of his girlfriends were mixed. And, he was very popular in Detroit, the guys didn't look your way if you were dark skinned, and even light skinned was playing out to being biracial. Sad, nothing has changed.

But its the exact opposite for them. Dark skin men are considered the standard and lightermen are considered weak. Dark skin men actually have representation in the media and they always have. Dark skin women, however, keeps changing with the season. We go out of style in black media but as you can see dark skin men and light skinned women stay at the top being they are the main ones pushing this standard and acting like colorism doesn't exist because they keep winning and we keep buying.
So... I watched your video to get some insight on the history of colorism so that I can pass some valuable information on to my niece and my God children. I like how you pieced together examples of tv and movies during several decades👍🏽. My problem is when you being to use the words ugly or fat to describe the women who you do not think fit any standard of beauty👎🏽. Being a plus size woman, I found it extrreeeemely offensive that you are objectifying women for there size, the same way the entertainment industry has done to dark skin women.

Good evening, I appreciate the historical context that was placed in this video and shows we still have a fight ahead of us to eliminate colorism in the black community, as well as, worldwide. However, although I enjoyed some of the content presented in this video, others are problematic. For instance you're deeming some black women "unnattractive" because of their body type, as well as, calling some darker skinned women "unattractive", because they're not your cup of tea. I don't get how you do a video on colorism, but in the same video call some darker black women ugly or fat. That is contradiction and hypocrisy. Not to mention the last part of your video was pure ignorance.

Jennifer yes I was enjoying the documentary until the ending...was planning on sharing and giving it a thumbs up! Then the ending came and then I was questioning the motive of the "creator" of this documentary. Such a disappointment🖓
I was okay with it to be honest because watching it back then I had the exact same thoughts. Every episode Monique would literally throw herself on that dude who despised her. It made no sense to me why any women would accept such treatment from anyone. Plus he would ALWAYS want a light skin girl, never a slimmed down dark or brown-skinned girl to at least show us that there wasn't a colorist agenda. Plus her daughter was also fat and unattractive to me and completely unwanted. I hated that show with a passion because unlike Moesha it presented us in a less desirable light which I didn't appreciate. You might think Monique is pretty, but for me and most people being fat alone is unattractive and disqualifies you. You can have the prettiest face, but that means nothing if I hate 95% of the rest of you. I would NEVER date a fat guy and most men prefer their women in shape/ thick so why would we have a show with two main characters being loud, fat and unattractive. I also thought they looked horrible. I hated that show.

Nell Carter, Countess Vaughn, & Monique was & isn't ugly nor unattractive wmn. just because u r large doesn't mean u r less appealing. and Erika Alexander's character Max was so magnetic bcuz she was confident, intelligent, spontaneous, not afraid to show or tell how she wanted her sensuality/sexuality expressed. freaky & fun.. empowered & powerful yet somewhat in certain circumstances vulnerable but ALWAYS real. these traits made her even more attractive besides her natural beauty.. hardly ever any make-up & Queen Latifah was somewhat the same too.
This era as a kid and teen made me feel beautiful as a dark brown woman, esp Whitney!! She looked like my skin, well I am darker. But man wow the brown women in this era were beautiful!!
While it is disheartening to see the images change throughout, I am optimistic that a more positive change can occur. Being born in the 70's I only have to stir up a memory of these wonderful shows. While I did enjoy them, noticing the foolery of light/dark disagreements didn't sit well with me. What is most troublesome is finding the same foolishness creeping up where we now only have the 'Ratchet/ hood chick", the black woman who happens to be Hypersexualized, the 'aggressive female' or the woman who loves emasculating her man. Black women can be gentle, sweet and kind but we are rarely shown that way. Speaking out against the stereotypes that are being pushed in the media can get recognition fairly quickly, but that should be followed up with action. Money should NOT flow toward movies or TV shows that do not listen to our plight.
Excellent video very well done. I always wondered how we go from black is beautiful with natural hairstyles to go backwards in the 80's glorifying light skin and Jerry Curls. But let's not forget, the light skin men were glorified in the 80's as well.
I tell you, I'm 48, and when I was growing up black young women were active, jumping double dutch, hop scotch all day long, doing their line dancing, 'crooked letter I" dance. We had hip hip parties EVERY weekend dancing everywhere (I grew up in Philly). The boys played basketball (real basketball, not Xbox), street football, stick ball, half ball, wall ball, flee fly, tag, flipping up and down the street, skateboarding relay racing slap boxing, body boxing etc......Always something physically active. Now these kids just want to be sexy and play with their phones ALL DAY!! The girls took turns doing each others hair on the front step, with the big green jar of Afro Sheen back in the day, and kept their hair nice and their bodies were incredible. I really don't believe today's generation of girls don't know how to do their hair unless it's a weave, way over weight at 14, walking around with a $600 iPhone (with a cracked screen) and no job, tight cheap ass clothes. I saw this young boy bend over in front of the gumball machine at a pizza shop and his pants were literally down by his knees, looking stupid as shit, with holes in his draws. Maybe I'm a old and out of touch but you kids today......I don't get it?!!! Also, and my parents generation where more sophisticated than we were, they wore suits, spit shine wing tip shoes, pleted pants, women wore dresses and hair just so. Now what has happened to us?!

When I was growing up, we had long hair, short hair, and in between and it was always real. Weave would have gotten you laughed out of school. inquizative44 I think every generation has something to say about the next. That's not every person in this generation. We do have the natural hair movement. More young women are wearing there natural hair and not perm relaxed. There are more acceptance in interarial dating which wasn't there before. Yeah there a down side but I like literature I can do hair I'm in cosmetology. Lots of people in my community are apart of it helping in food drives and doing small projects.
I do see more black women venturing into natural styles. I look in admiration, but I know many black women are thinking he's looking in distaste, so I'm always sure to pay them a compliment to let them know it looks good and it feels good to see our uniquely beautiful women being who they are. It gives me hope that maybe there is a chance of community again. The health of a community is measured by the health of it's woman because you are the bearer of our children. So thank you for your response. Let's all keep talking so we can sort this thing out. I don't write these things merely to be critical, I do it to make us aware that we need to be closer. Also, the more you wear your natural hair, the better you'll be in achieving desirable styles and better hair care products and techniques for maintaining our unique hair.
I am 48 years old as well and I agree with you. Today I seen this young man wearing his slacks down and showing his underwear. I couldn't believe that this foolishness is still going on today. I was a Teenager girl growing up in the 80s and to be honest I have never liked that Era either. In face the 80s all the way until now,were dreadful years for me. I admired the 70s and I've always wanted to be a Teenager or in my Twenties during that time. Because of the self love black pride movement,the respect,the mannerism,the music,the Television shows,the styles of fashion,Soul Train and the Afros. Haha,I wear my Natural hair in a Afro and I wear it proudly. Also the women were slim,sexy,elegant and feminine to me. My mother and her friends,were in dresses the majority of the time. I disagree on the video portrayed Nell Carter from the show Gimme A Break,to me she was sexy and beautiful. Sadly in the 21st. Well, in regard to Josephine Baker (before Television), she had to leave the US because she was regarded too dark to be onstage; she blew up when she was in Paris, France. So,...that was a misnomer about her being the Eurocentric standard here in America...maybe later, but being redundant, she had to leave America because she was regarded too dark to perform onstage in vaudeville (on black vaudeville stages).

From what I can see, colorism with black men is the opposite. It represents dark-skinned black men as strong and sexy. It also represents light skinned men as sexy and rarely do you all have to compete with each other the same way women do. I personally don't see the similarities because I think colorism mainly affect women. I have never seen a movie where a woman picked lighter men over a dark one or vice versa. Every movie I see where they are both dark and light men they are both attractive.
This was a very intresting piece. I learned a lot. But one thing towards the end of this movie you sound so ignorant. You did not even need to comment this piece was good all by itself. Anyways regarding Brazil a lot of women get plastic surgery done in that area. That's what they are known for. So if you need to go all the way down there that's pretty sad. Enjoy the plastic. With black women they look nice in all colors and sizes. That's what black women are known for is curves no fake stuff.
You know what's interesting?.. my wife HATED being light-skinned because they use to call her "White girl".. she liked dark-skinned men so she can have a darker baby. Our daughter makes her excited. And another thing.. because I was use to being with women who weren't black, (only one of them was white also the black women I liked were taken unfortunately) when I got with her.. one of my aquantainces said "You finally got a black woman, but she don't count, she's light-skinned." I pinched my nose having a slight headache.

My thing is I identify as a black woman and it feels as if folks make lightskin black women feel like they don’t have a right to black men bcus our skin is not black. Thats the most absurd thing.
