The History of Disney Sequels: A Direct-To-Video Story 

The fact that DIsney is able to produce sequels to centuries old fairy tales never ceases to amaze me.

If Walt disliked sequels he would HATE the modern world of reboots.

To me, “The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride” (1998) is the BEST Disney sequel I saw!

I'm actually starting to miss the days of the direct-to-video cheapquels. At least the 2D animators had SOMETHING to do. And at least the main Disney and Pixar studios were still churning out original content.

I’m gonna miss those Tinker Bell sequels. They were actually really interesting and they kept adding lore to the Neverland universe I never expected.

I was a kid while these films were produced. I remember being shocked and offended by how lame most were. I loved plenty of kids shows that doesn’t hold up (Barney the dinosaur), so it’s not like I was a child snob. I think it’s the stark contrast of story/character quality that turned me off.

I’ve noticed that both studio ghibli and LAIKA never make sequels.

I genuinely believe that Little Mermaid 2 (since u showed it) had the potential and a decent concept it was just made with the mindset of "we want more mon-ah"

Some are good, some are bad, and some are The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.

Mulan 2 is my least favorite of them. That movie legitimately pissed me off.

2:34 Actually, there was a planned sequel Walt DID want to make during his life time and that was a sequel to Fantasia. Unfortunately, it was scrapped because the first movie didn't make the money he hoped the movie would, back then, Fantasia's reception was split and it was during World War 2 when running the studio at the time was getting really complicated. Instead, he used some bits from the planned Fantasia sequel into Make Mine Music. It wouldn't be until 1999 when we did get an actual follow up to Fantasia with Fantasia 2000.

There was also talks of a Jungle Book 3, where Baloo and Shere Khan get kidnapped by a Russian Circus and Shere Khan redeems himself, which sounds like a lackluster idea. Plus there was also set to be a Hercules 2, which takes place during the Trojan War. Not much is known about the two, apart from the what the premises were going to be and that Hercules and Meg would have a daughter named Hebe.

But now Disney is shitting out "live action" remakes. Which in their own way is lazier and MORE money grabbing than the sequels. At least the sequels had to think of a different story.

Lion King 2 was the best Disney sequel we got. Great story, great animation, great music, great characters, and great acting.

I can't help but feel the DTV marketing might have worked better if: 1. They valued quality over quantity and invested in a smaller amount of projects they could put more time and effort (and likely budget) into. 2. They marketed them for what they were, more humble companion pieces, and didn't slap a big '2' or '3' on most of them like you were expected to treat them with the same reverence as Disney's often revolutionary original films. Bambi 2 REALLY should have kept its working title 'Bambi and the Great Prince' for example.

Cinderella 3 was pretty fire man. Just seeing Cinderella grow and become interesting was cool, more so when the original was so boring as a kid.

Lol I’m so glad the dumbo sequel never saw the light of day. He was already separated from his mother, why would you make a direct sequel that way? That’s just cruel.

I actually like the Aladdin, Lion King, and the little mermaid sequels. Also Cinderella 3 A Twist in Time was really good.

I grew up with the tinkerbell movies, so of course I love them since they remind me of being a child :)

You know, out of all the movies that had to get the sequel treatment from Disney, the one that BENEFITED from it... was Lilo and Stitch, probably because it was an original story and people wanted to see more of Stitch's adventures.

Ironically "Aquaman"(2018) has a similar plot to "The Little Mermaid II" XD

Walt Disney was against movie sequels except for The Three Caballeros (1944 Mexico and 1945 USA) and Son of Flubber (1963 USA). As far as short cartoons go, Disney did do a sequel to Three Orphan Kittens (1935), called More Orphan Kittens (1936), and also did sequels to The Three Little Pigs (1933).

Not all of them are bad, I like all three of the Lilo & Stitch sequels, although I find it funny that Lilo & Stitch is the Walt Disney Animation Studios film that has the most sequel & spinoff material with three sequels, a short film, an anime series called Stitch!, a chinese animated series called Stitch & Ai and coming soon a live-action remake.

The fact that John Lassiter is already in charge of another studio worries me.

I remember having some of the platinum editions and the sequels. I even brought The Little Mermaid 3: Ariel’s Beginning to 4th grade.

With Ralph Breaks The Internet, were at least getting a major Improvement of the Disney Sequels and hopefully Disney learned their previous mistake and will climb up the ladder of better sequels sooner or later.

Actually, Walt did produce one other sequel besides Son of Flubber. He produced Savage Sam, sequel to Old Yeller.

Lady and the Tramp 2 was a descent film and stayed loyal to the original animation.

2020 might be the decade Disney and Pixar will go back to make nothing but original animated movies. Although, I would love to see a third Fantasia movie.

My favorite Disney sequels are Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure, Lion King 2, Lion King 1 1/2, and Return to Neverland. Also, I personally didn't like Rescuers Down Under, but I didn't like the first Rescuers either, so maybe I should have expected that.

Bambi 2 is the best straight-to-DVD Sequel, change my mind.

Wreck It Ralph 2 was luckily really great, it had us back to the old characters as brilliant as they are, a brand new story that is paced greatly for the most part and some of the best CGI animation I have seen. A well made sequel that deserves to be a classic as much as the original.

I never knew about the first version of Toy Story 3, and that's my second favorite film of all time! What a phenomenal masterpiece we got...

The best Disney sequel is objectively Cinderella 3. Sorry, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them.

Pixar and Dreamworks are probably the only two studios to make the best animated sequels but it’s a hit and miss.

As a genuine Winnie the Pooh fan, I can confirm that Pooh's Grand Adventure and Pooh's Heffalump Movie should have swapped formats. What I mean is that the former should have been in theaters, while the latter should have stuck to home media. Of course, it doesn't hurt or help that I personally place them as the boundaries on how childish or mature the franchise can get as of now.

The Three Caballeros: Weird, but has its moments. The Rescuers Down Under: AWESOME! Aladdin II: The Return of Jafar: Nothing wrong with it other than the fact that Robin Williams didn't come back. Aladdin III: The King of Thieves: Now that Robin Williams is back, it's just inches away from being as good as the first one. Beauty and the Beast midquels: Haven't seen them and don't plan on it. Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin: Decent, but nowhere near as good as many people think it to be. Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World: Personally, I think it easily could have been attached to the first film if Disney was comfortable making longer films. The Lion King II: Simba's Pride: EPIC! Toy Story 2: My all-time favorite film! Fantasia 2000: Haven't seen it, but would be open to it. An Extremely Goofy Movie: Two words: BERET GIRL! The Fox and the Hound 2: HOW DARE YOU RUIN ONE OF MY FAVORITE DISNEY MOVIES! Cinderella III: A Twist in Time: The last good direct-to-video Disney sequel. The Little Mermaid III: Ariel's Beginning: Avoiding it like the plague. Toy Story 3: Eh, it was ok. Cars 2: Eh, it was ok. Monsters University: The only prequel to ever be awesome! Finding Dory: Just a little bit better than the original. Incredibles 2: Definitely lives up to its title. Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet: Definitely worth watching and definitely worth buying on Blu-Ray.

I'm glad that not EVERYTHING in that pile of DTV shlock was terrible. And honestly, for all the sequels that did NOT get made, I think one that could very have easily lent itself to a sequel was 'The Great Mouse Detective' (think of it as being called 'The Hound of the Mousekervilles'); not as a cheap DTV rehash or half-assed story, but one that has a similar feeling and as much of a right to be on the big screen as 'The Rescuers Down Under' and 'Fantasia 2000'. I think that could have been phenomenal! But nooooooooooooo! We had to get garbage like 'The Fox and the Hound 2', which, given the original was something from Disney's dark age, was the biggest indicator to me, as a kid, that they were desperately grasping at straws. And personally, I wish I could just fast-forward right now past these pointless live-action remakes of 'The Lion King' and the like. (Unless the results of other, lesser-known-but-more-deserving-of-a-remake properties turned out to be good, but otherwise, bleh!)

The Lilo and Stitch sequels are my guilty pleasure. All the criticisms are fair, but the stuff was my childhood and they still bring a smile to my face lol. Also they're miles better than that sorry excuse for a movie 'Bell's Magical Winter Christmas Thingy Adventure' or whatever.

Pete Doctor now controls Pixar so the Monsters Inc. TV series could open the door for a potential direct sequel to Monsters Inc.

Dumbo 2 was proposed and cancelled LONG before the DTV sequel run ended. The fact Dumbo 2 never got off the ground despite the heavy promotion and supposed care put into it (even having one of the original film's creative members) leaves me thinking there were maybe creative differences, and Disney executives tried to turn it into a generic contemporary cash cow while the people in charge insisted on something that didn't tarnish the original. According to sources, if so, it wouldn't be the only time the people at Disneytoons legitimately tried to make a good sequel but the top dogs forced their hands.

It was a weird time with these Direct-To-Video films. And speaking of weird. 4:50 I think Animat have wings now.

The best Disney sequel on home video is 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure (2003) and the best theatrical Disney sequel is The Rescuers Down Under (1990).

11:41 Yeah, I remember seeing that trailer several times on my Dumbo 60th anniversary DVD as a kid and for many years I was so confused as to why I couldn't find anything else from that film outside of that trailer until I found out about it's cancellation one day while browsing online to find any other information about the project. None the less I am now relived that they cancelled the sequel because it and the upcoming remake would never top the original :)
