By the middle of 1955, Walt Disney had achieved his dream. Almost. He'd dreamed about his park for decades, experimented with building model towns and displays, he'd assembled an unparalleled team of creative minds to work on it, spent years negotiating television contracts to get funding, and started construction a year ago.
And with a week left until the Opening Day celebration televised live on ABC, the park was still unfinished. As the crews, and even Walt himself, rushed to finish building, painting, decorating, planting, and polishing the park, Walt celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary. He threw a party, which acted as a sort of soft opening for his new park, but no one showed up at the appointed time. So he stood at the front gate, nervously pacing and chain-smoking, thinking about the last year.
In this seven part series, we explore the experiences that shaped Walt Disney's desire to build his own magical world, and how he eventually came to realize that dream.
