@@Hakku1403 idk, I kinda agree with him, I love the game but I can't call it incredible by any stretch of the imagination. Played the game on a PS3 and that shit ran at like 15FPS or something close to that, graphics were ok and the gameplay was less than great, I especially noticed the flaws when I tried 100%ing it, they had a good ideia, I'd even say many good ideas, but the combat, the movement and level design left me kinda bummed out because I really like the art direction, world, story and characters. I still own it and one day I'll come back to try to get that platinum trophy.
When we gamers lament and complain about games having no heart or creativity, just being sequels over and over and designed for cynical monetisation and we ask "why are we left with this? where did all the good games go?" the answer is, we didn't buy them.
it's not underrated. From what I saw it had good critical ratings and the people that did play it really enjoyed it. Myself included. Maybe it didn't have the marketing needed to gain popularity or too many other games released around it by big-name studios and publishers.
I've been playing videogames since 1985. I own about 500 games on steam. And yet, only handful of games I completed. Even more rare that I would be replaying it. Enslaved is that rare game that I completed and played over and over. What a fantastic game this was. Just watching this made me reinstall the game. Now that I have new hardware and widescreen monitors, I can enjoy it again in new immersive ways.
man, this game brings back really good memories, my wife that is not a gamer just sat there with me while i was explaining the story to her while i played the game until the end, it was really captivating, thank you game devs for this gem, it's games like this that truly proves that games are a form of art same as a painting or music.
And then I imagine she was like "wait, games have in-depth stories now?". On a serious note, I love it when a game's story and gameplay can be so captivating that even non-gamers can enjoy them :-)
@Steyr Acrx Did YOU finish the game? As stated in this video that ending raised more questions than it answered. How did that not leave room for a sequel?
I think it was the year 2010, too competitive. I was very busy with these: Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, God of war 2, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Civilization V, BioShock 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Assassin's Creed II, Amnesia, Fallout: New Vegas, Dark siders and few more...
It's deeply ironic to hear that Ninja Theory worries about Enslaved competing with Horizon, when Horizon itself was initially shelved because the devs felt it was too similar to Enslaved.
Gamers : "Where are all the good games with heart and soul?!" Also Gamers : "Never heard of this experimental game, Imma skip it and buy the latest AC and CoD game."
One of my all time favorites. I am a sucker for that kind of green post apocalyptic setting and plenty of my all time favorite games (Bulletstorm, Nier, BGE, Dying Light, Borderlands 2) are in that setting. I really hope that Ninja Theory makes a sequel one day.
I enjoyed playing this game a lot years ago. The Story and Characters were very engaging. Gameplay seemed rough at times though, and I wasn't too fond of the autosave-only checkpoints. Still.... Fantastic and underrated game.
I recently beat this game twice and it became one of my favorite games from the PS3 and 360 era and the game still holds up visually. Thanks GVMERS for this video.
As soon as I see a GVMERS doc on my feed i know that i'm gonna get some snackables and have a good time while learning something bout the video games industry as well.. Keep up the great work guys. Much love!
Literally one of my fave games ever made, I had such an amazing gaming experience, the ost, the story, the visuals, the characters (esp trip, her va did an amazing job) just came together for such a special game. I’ll never forget the memories I have of Enslaved ❤️
@@feerocomics5082 he is, he thinks animators don't deserve shared credit for his mocap. It's a team effort. It's like some actor saying the makeup artist doesn't deserve credit.
Enslaved remains one of my favorite games. I still remember seeing it for the first time and the anticipation. My roommate and I got it day 1. Always wished there was a sequel but it made Ninja Theory a house hold name for us.
I remember trying this game because i saw an ad relating it to Dragon Ball. I was a huge anime fan and loved DB, so that drew me in. What they actually meant was 'Journey to the West', which original Dragon Ball was very loosely based on. Still i'm glad i got tricked into trying it because Enslaved was pretty fun, though unpolished in places.
This game is so amazing and beautiful. A true underrated gem that deserved so much better un terms of sales. Kudos to ninja theory, this game Will live forever in my heart.
As far as I know, Trip's full name in fact is Tripitaka in the game as well. :) Very nice video though! Love Enslaved and coming back to it every now and then.
Serkis and his mocap was the saving grace of both Enslaved and Heavenly Sword. I doubt anyone even remembers what gameplay was like in both, but everyone remembers the characters and their performances.
I remember them well, the Sixaxis with Heavenly Sword and the stories of both were great. Not forgettable games at all from those I've been collecting for the PS3/360 over time from any genres I'm familiar with or have never played before.
I love how they went over the inspiration for the game. I had always wondered if the source material was based off of the original journey to the West. I'm glad to know it actually was actually inspired from the Chinese epic of the same name. Because I loved reading it as a child. Once again this channel never disappoints.
So awesome that you paid homage to this game. It was recommended to me by a friend and I absolutely loved it. If this game was able to launch in the 2004-2008 market, I think it would have done super well and found a hit fanbase with any Jak, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper type fan. I always thought it was so cool that Lindsay Shaw from Ned's Declassified who most people at the time knew for playing Jennifer Mosley was able to switch over and give such a moving, mature performance for this game. Also, props to this game's beautiful level design. Multiple times I would just stop and look at the environment, completely gripped by it's beauty.
I can't believe someone just randomly made a video on this game! I played it a few months ago for the first time in like, 8 or 9 years. Always incredibly enjoyable.
This video came out in my birthday, and Enslaved is one of my favorite games for PC, I love all Ninja Theory games, including DMC, so I hope they keep doing such amazing experiences... thanks for the video!
I found out about this game on a random comments I don't even remember where, and when I watch it's gameplay i was so shocked, and the same day I get my hands on this excellent game and boy I love it, journey to the west is a game with simple combat but very well writing storyline and graphics at the time it was released, it's such a shame so many people don't know about this game, and it is the reason why it's sell was not good, I'm glad to see how team ninja still making awesome games though. And thank you guys to making this video 👍
OMG, thanks for that video! Enslaved is one of my all time favourites, I beat several times on both ps3 and pc, and it made me forever excited for anything made by Ninja Theory.
This game is so nostalgic I remember playing on the 360 back when it came out. I recently got it on a higher tier console and damn man it’s still so good. Enslaved forever has a special place in my heart ❤
What a fine little gem. I fondly remember it for it's fantastic world-building, artwork and characters. I always think of it as closely related to Beyond Good and Evil.
When I first played the downloadable demo for Enslaved (remember demos, anyone?) the Prince of Persia Sands of Time style of platforming with the level design was the immediate incentivizing influence that swayed my attention to buy this game on its release. However, this History video has been a nice revelation with the games inspiration coming from the Chinese novel Journey to the West and that books obvious contribution to the games title Odyssey to the West and its ensemble cast with Monkey, Trip and Pigsy. Now I can look upon Enslaved with a more enlightened perception in that the games characters and story have a more profound and significant underlying theme woven into the games narrative structure. While I too would love see an Enslaved sequel spawn in the near future, I'm honestly more grateful that Ninja Theory continues to evolve their games and themselves with unique, independent titles like Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice.
Everytime I watch one of your documentaries I wanna check out these games you display. I really feel I missed out on some good gaming gems with these. Keep up the great work here love the content.
I've got the utmost respect for Ninja Theory. They've put out some of the most diverse and well thought out games of any generation. They don't get the credit they deserve but I hope to see that change one day.
I bloody love this game. I pre-ordered it back in the day and played it through multiple times. It was great to see a competent platformer in a console generation that lacked them. Gutted we never got a sequel.
I wish Alex Garland was still into collaborating with game devs. He is one of my favorite directors of this generation and you can really see his contributions to Enslaved and even DMC.
I've been gaming for 25 years and to this date, Enslaved is the best game I've ever bought on a whim. Such style and atmosphere. The art direction is incredible and characters are great. This is one of, if not the most underrated games in the history of the industry, only selling 730,000 copies. This game did not deserve to be overlooked. We need more quality original IP's like this.
Picked this up for £2 and thought "I'll just test it out for 20 mins" but was still playing hours later. I felt the similarity with Horizon ZD and the Last of Us. Interesting documentary. Thanks.
Literally just finished playing this in one sitting after starting it randomly yesterday after looking at games in my Steam library I hadn't played, and I was very much surprised by it. The camera controls sometime _suck,_ but otherwise it was _much_ better than I was expecting! Great story and a really well-crafted world. ^^
played Hellblade just last year and LOVED every second of it I, literally, never ever heard of this game, it's a shame, I'll give it a try later tonight
Personally I loved hellblade too and hated Enslaved. The story didn't grab me and the mechanics were too simple to be interesting. In short I found it to be a 'beige' game. I loathe 'climbing' segments and quicktime events which the game has in spades. Both aren't actually gameplay (no decisions) and would be genuinely more enjoyable in cutscene format. Monkey isn't a mischievous simian, but instead a brutish and idiotic musclebound dude, trip isn't a wise monk but instead a plot device/permanent escort quest. In short, if you didn't buy it maybe think twice. If you did I'm curious what you thought. If I went from hellblade to enslaved I would have done a big disappoint. I'm curious regarding your experience Erzei
@@doge2629 A) I said nothing about permadeath. Hellblade is a deep psychological exploration of mental illness. It excells in story, gameplay, animations, music, and atmosphere. I would under no circumstance call it a 'souls like' B) I can't complain about the characters compared to the book its based off of?.... OK: The characters are bad on their own. C) Mocap is pretty common these days. Hellblade for an easy example uses it. Though I'd argue it has nothing to do with gameplay. D) If you want fluid, well animated combat play DMC (whole series) E) You seem to have taken a very simplistic interpretation of what I mean by decisions. I mean gameplay decisions. You clearly played AC, AC has a handful of weapons/tools/approaches to combat/assasination. Those provide gameplay decisions. Combat in Enslaved was competent, but not nearly as deep as something combat focused (you mostly mash basic attack) and the combat is broken up by hours and hours of climbing and jumping through linear paths. There is literally one way to play through the game, it's like watching a gameplay video with quicktime events. F) Platforming games develop platforming as a core mechanic. They have some kind of difficulty or mechanical complexity in the jumping. (Mario jumps on enemies, super meat boy sticks to walls etc.) Enslaved's climbing nonsense is always a long series of contextual 'climbing' locations that are jumped between in sequence without a chance of failure. They're long weird looking corridors. G) The thing is a movie trying to be a game and doing poorly at both. If you take one thing away from this: Hellblade is genuine art and keep its name out your filthy mouth.
I absolutely LOVED Enslaved! Seeing the inside of Ninja Theory's studio just makes me sad knowing how close I've actually been to it, having delivered to a company who share the same building while I was in my previous job.
I remember playing this with my dad (taking it in turns on each death) I remember being so amazed by the environment and the enemies, I was 5 when the game was first re leased so the experience was 1000x better, I miss those days so much
Rad game. So cool that a filmmaker who loves video games got involved too. Hope you do a video about Ninja Theory's DMC which Garland helped on but just a bit.
I had this game in my steam since 5 or 6 years ago. Love the game. Found the graphic very good, and the art really stays pretty even after all the years. I really hoped they made a sequel for it. Feels like the story is not yet finished
One of the most commercially underrated and under the radar masterpieces of that generation in gaming. I played it on launch and loved it but was much too young to really grasp that nuances of it storytelling. Definitely worth revisiting if you have to means too. If fact I’m quite surprised Ninja Theory hasn’t made any plans to port to this generation of consoles. They could definitely make some massive sales if they did.
Played the demo an uncountable ammount of times as a child. Took me almost 4 years after release to find a copy in a bargain bin. This game is up in a special shelf of games I'm going to keep with me forever.
I remember being excited for this game, pre ordering, playing the game and enjoying it..my only issue was the highlighted platforms you had to jump to.
Always adored this game - easily in my top 3 all-time favourites (I think I actually have 3 copies of it). Would love a remaster! Watching this reminded me I must pick up Hellblade.
I played this game, and never felt so connected to a game like thia before, Enslaved is a unicorn in the gaming world and its best to stay like this without a sequel.
Ninja Theory is one of the most underrated game dev studios, i'm happy that Microsoft recognized these talented people and i'm positive that in the future we will see AAA games that rival the likes HZD, Uncharted and GOW
I can only imagine how excited the team would have been seeing Black Myth: Wukong's gameplay reveal. If they were that into the story, they must be looking forward to trying that game out whenever it releases.
One of my favorite games hands down. Came to Xbox backwards compatibility at the tail end and I was so happy. If you haven't played this game I'm sorry.
