Yi Seong-ge didn’t change his name... Taejo was his title after he died, it was a Chinese title used for the first emperor of a dynasty. In this case korean used it as well for their first king of Joseon dynasty.

Actually, Yi Seong-gye changed his name to Yi Dan after he ascended to the throne. But most people kept with Yi Seong-gye as it is pretty much a better name i guess. And yes you are sorta correct if i'm right. All Joseon kings are given temple names after their deaths decided by their successor with the exception of Yeonsangun and Gwanghaegun.

No, you're right. King Taejo founded the new dynasty and changed his real name to Yi Dahn after he ascended the throne. His son, King Jeongjong Yi Bang-gwa, also changed his name to Yi Gyeong. I've watched a lot of historical Korean dramas and could get a basic sense of the timeline, but this video helped me to organize everything. Just as well, I can now make sense of all the historical dramas involving Japan. I was confused by them for a long time and had them saved on varies lists to return to. Watching this made me eager to continue watching both Korean based and Japan involved historical dramas and continue studying the history of these Asian countries and their involvement with one another outside of fictional storytelling. Thanks for the brief video, it was a treat to watch!

This is a really great piece on history, Billy! I am wondering if as a next step from this you would create a more 'Korean language version' for more advanced learners to get a feel of it in the language? Often I go to museums in Korea where there's a lot of terms on information boards that I don't really get because there is the assumption that a Korean who has gone through Korean history class in school is reading it, so a lot is left down to the reader's background understanding. Also I think King Sejong is probably one of the most interesting people from Korean History- I would love to know more about him :P
@ZachMikeMoller

You videos are always interesting - one reason I decided to subscribe. There is, occasionally, a problem. The reason for the division of Korea along the 38th parallel had to do with partitioning the country for rule by the Soviet Union and by the US. As this partition was expected to be temporary until a new Korean government could be organized to replace the previous Japanese government, the line of partition was not thought about seriously. A couple of guys in the war department in the US, using a map they got out of a National Geographic magazine, simply picked the 38th parallel. They wanted as much under US control as possible, so they picked a line as far north as they thought they could get away with. The Soviet Union accepted the partition without comment, because they had their own plans for Korea, and they, too, thought the partition would only be for a short time. There is little in this world so permanent as a temporary measure.

Thanks for your video, and that's great! But I still found a trivial question that you said"Confucianism was introduced during the Joseon dynasty", but actually the Confucianism was introduced far ahead of that time. In fact, during the Joseon Dynasty, the neo-Confucianism, represented by Zhu Xi and brothers of Cheng "程朱理学" was introduced in this era. And the role of Confucianism started to be more emphasized than before, paralleling the Buddhism.

During the Imjin War (Japanese invasion), the Korean fleet mainly consists of Pan-ok-seon (translate to 'flat-deck ship'). They were armed with 24 5-inch heavy cannons and specialised in long-range engagement. Admiral Yi had 13 Panokseon at Myeongnyang, not Turtle ships. Also, the turtle ship is named like that because it has an armoured ceiling on its upper deck, covering the sailors from the ranged attack. Also, the vessel has arrays of nails on it to stop enemy boarding attempts. Fun fact: It's actually a dragon's head on Turtle ship's bow. It serves as a funnel to spread sulfur gas or a turret for smaller guns.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 2 года назад
This was a mistake I made in the video, by saying those were turtle ships at that specific battle. The turtle ships were used for different battles.

Korea sure does have a long history of wars, but I think Helena meant specifically that the 38th parallel was decided before the Korean war happened. Wasn't it before the end of WWII that Korea was, at least officially, divided at the parallel?

You did a great job covering the basic history of Korea but it is imperative to get more accurate messages across to non-Koreans. 1. Jumong came from Buyeo which is in Manchuria and spread from there to Korean peninsula. 2. Gaya was an extremely important Kingdom in transmitting their culture and iron technology to Japan. 3. Buddhism has already established on all 3 kingdoms by 500 AD and not by Koryo. 4. Yi Su Shin only used 5 turtle ships throughout many campaigns. The largest ship battle of Myeongnyang, he had only 13 Panokseon ships (no turtle ship) which was stronger and structurally superior to Japanese ships. Japanese had more than 333 ships (25 to 1 ratio). 5. I wish you could mentioned that Mongol empire pretty much dominated the whole world which they did and wanted to conquer Japan as well. You need learn more about Mongol Empire. 6. You really got this one wrong. There was already Sino-Japanese war by 1895. Russia wanted to control Manchuria by that time (so they can reach to Vlodivostok on the fartest eastern port). It was perceived that Japan would be vulnerable to any power that controlled the Korean peninsula. Korea moved to closer with Russia and that’s the main reason. 7. Lastly, it was the Baekje, Gaya and Silla kingdoms (mainly Baekje) that have influenced Yamato (Japan). Simply speaking, it was the Baekje royalities/conquerors found the Yamato Japan. I wish you can mention that on your video. Well done.

Interesting video. I feel like another forgotten part, or at least not known to outsiders, is the fact that there was a South Korean dictator as well after the Korean War.

Thank you for this excellently accessible overview. I recently started looking for documentaries on the history of Korea (beyond the wars of the twentieth century, and the current news events). I'm dismayed how little is available.

Thanks! And I also wanted to make this video specifically because of how little info was available on RU-vid.
