Stage magic has a fantastically interesting history. From ancient Egyptians to Harry Houdini to David Blaine, magic has been blowing people's minds for thousands of years. Let's take a look at the who, where, and why of it all.
In this episode of The History of Fun, Justin (@juddtoday) explores the interesting history of board stage magic, with a little help from Dr. Gustav Kuhn, expert on the psychology of magic, from the University of London, Goldsmiths.

Special thanks to Dr. Kuhn! If you'd like to check out his work, including the Magic Lab, follow this link:

As a kid in the 80's in the UK, I always looked forward to watching The Paul Daniels Magic Show on tv. He was a showman, and was great at showcasing other magicians and variety acts.

when i was little i was really into magic- so much so that when my mom had to take me to work at her tax office, i would bring my magic kit and do magic shows for the people in the waiting room. this was years ago, early 2000s, and i learned recently that many of my mom's clients still remember me and my little show. one lady who was a child at the time grew up and went back to my mom to get her taxes done because she remembered my act and was hopping i was still around. although i can't do the show anymore it feels nice knowing that two decades later there are people out there who remember my little magic act and still enjoy it.

Appleton, WI where Houdini grew up has a museum with a dedicated floor to his history. Also, my cat is named Houdini, lol.

Thank you for this video. I'm a big fan of Penn & Teller, and I love learning card tricks now and then. I'm always torn apart when it comes to magic. Do I want to know how the magic trick is done, or do I just want to be mesmerized by the trick itself and keep thinking on how it could be done?

Anybody else notice the little slieght of hand thing Dr Kuhn did during the interview? Pretty cool.

The thing about magic shows for me is that I know it's all illusion, sleight of hand, and trickery. However I still love and am amazed by it, even if I have a general idea of how the trick works.

Feeding multitudes with a few fish. Walking on water. Changing water to wine. Jesus was a phenomenal early magician.

Enjoyed this, but it took a long time to get to the actual story. Can't believe that you didn't even mention Mark Wilson.

"The old cuppin' balls theme"? 😳 Oh . . . cup AND balls! I thought you got a little x-rated for a moment there.

That joke is just as old as the trick itself

I think it could be better argued that it started thousands and thousands of years ago beginning with shamanism and the healing practices. I highly recommend reading the book, "The Death and Resurrection Show" by Rogan Taylor.

And they weren't witches. They were ordinary women who practiced folk medicine and were unfairly targeted.

While it was mostly women that were targeted by the witch trials, it was not only women. In the Salome witch trials, one man was found guilty and was crushed to death.

There was a media network that told them false things to infuriate them and gain popularity based on their grievances. The most popular host on the antiwitch network was even caught writing about how he didn't even believe the hatred he was propagating to get people angry and increase his "stocks" and pillories. He was a tucker named Carl.

I always found the fun in magic by knowing it was fake, but still dumbfounded after the trick and i can not figure out how they did it. Or the discussions afterwards on how you think they did this trick or that. Stocking of the imagination and the social discourse is what magic was always about with me

Like everything else, "magic"' is easy to understand if you choose to. It's a lot harder to understand quantum superposition for example than how to levitate a woman on stage.

Justin, my dude. Are you reading my wishlists or something? Board games, roller coasters, and now prestidigitation? You are on a roll! Loved it. Since a tetris movie is in the works, could we perhaps see a history of video games in the future? Oh, and as for favorite magicians: While I am a huge fan of classics like Penn & Teller and Ricky Jay, I'm a sucker for good, experimental close-up card work. And right now, there aren't many better than Shin Lim in my opinion. Dude is smoooooooth.

I can not believe that we went through a history of magic and did not go into the masked magician even once. The TV show in the 90's that showed how all the tricks where done in an effort not to ruin magic, but to get magicians to innovate and imagine new spectacular ways to do magic with out using the same old rricks that have been done for hundreds of years.

Because he's my teacher, it's the Swiss Magician "Johnny Danger". In my opinion, he's the most entertaining person, I've ever met, and not only in performance, also to learn from him, practice with him or talking to him, is such a good feeling. For me, he's the best magician in the world🔥🔥🔥

George Carlin gave an example of magic. Describing himself sitting in a train car and looking out a window at a neighboring train on a parallel track. Then feeling his train car starting to move. Only then to quite suddenly realize that it's not his train moving. But that the other train is moving instead. I too have had and felt that train "illusion" and it is very magical!
