People have asked if I've done this game before and it was actually the third video I ever did back in 2018. It was only five minutes In length So I wanted to go back and give one of my favorite co-op games the justice it deserves.
I Love Nintendo and most importantly Mario Bros and the Arcade Too Anyway You Did a Amazing Job to Go Back and do a Remake of This Video of the History of Mario Bros Good Job PatmanQC Applause!! Applause!! 👏👏
The simple game should have sequels apart from Super Mario Bros. The basic competition or cooperation aspect has been brought to the NEW SMBs but I would also like the Mario Clash-style games for more family fun.
In one of the live action segments of the SMB Super Show there is a part where Mario as played by Captain Lou actually introduces himself as "Mario Mario" and this would have been years before the movie.
"Mario Bros." on the Atari 2600 was literally the first video game I ever played, on the first console I ever owned! Thanks for doing this one and getting it out while you're whole family is sick... very much appreciated! Hope you're all better soon!
Great video, really enjoyed that. I actually think Mario Bros might just be my favourite game ever. I loved it myself as a teenager nearly 40 years ago (both in my local arcade and on my C64) but in recent years it became the game of choice for me and my daughter, who is now 13. We've been playing it for years together since she was about 5 and it's still now the first game we go to if we visit a retro arcade as there's nothing like playing on an original cab. There's something about the two player mechanics that mean it's the arcade game that makes us both laugh the most - getting in each other's way, bouncing the other playing into enemies accidentally etc., it's just a really silly and fun game.
Thank you. You are right, it is just silly fun especially in two player mode. Always trying to make it to the next screen and rooting your teammate on as well
Man i remember seeing Mario bros. In the taxi call building near my house when i was young. It was joined by Jail Break, Super Basket ball and i think Donkey Kong 3. Playing this on the Atari 2600 was crazy, when Mario walked out sounded like he was dragging his feet with house slippers on😆
As always you are a fountain of nostalgia and history. Great game and the sounds of the arcade version always bring a sort of melancholy, keep it up my friend.
*Just wanted to share something with you Pat. I work at a New Zealand Government department and it is quite stressful work. Your 'happy little reviews' really do make my day and they are my happy place to go whenever I feel stressed or just want to unwind and feel something honest and happy and nostalgic and charming. I put the worries of the world behind me when I put on your videos. You really do make a difference to all of your loyal Patmaniacs worldwide.
Another great video! Brought back many great memories. The original Mario Bros arcade game is probably one of my all-time favorite games. My local corner convenience store had the cabinet and I'd always play it. I loved it cause the sound was turned up, and the cabinet had great speakers (great sounding bass, etc). Just an FYI, I believe when you were showing your MAME footage, you're missing some sound samples. There's a sound sample file you can grab which adds them back in (particularly the sound when Mario/Luigi's moving/running, etc). The sound adds a lot to the experience of the game. I love the GBA version as well, and it's great to play on the Wii U Virtual Console (on the TV!). Probably one of my favorite versions, only wish I could play local coop on the same screen (the original GBA supported link up cable via 2 GBAs for multiplayer). It's great that the Switch has an Arcade Archives version, and the Virtual Console (NES) version for the 3DS is awesome cause you can game share AND then play local coop with 2 3DSes over local wireless. Wish the Switch version did the same!
Thank you. I wasn't aware I was missing any samples, I will have to fix that. Now that you mention it though, I do recall this game was first emulated in Mame 25 years ago that we didn't need to download the samples for the sound to work properly LOL completely forgot about that. Thanks for the info on the other games
Thanks for the history of Mario Bros. the game. The NES version was impressive when compared to the original arcade classic. The fireball timer was tough to avoid sometimes when surrounded. Hopefully you're feeling better now. And thanks for the details on Mario Mario, for his last name. ;)
Thank you for this fantastic and informative video. I hope you are doing well. Your videos always warm my heart and watching them makes me feel better when I'm feeling depressed.
I still play this! Quarters in Salt Lake City has it, and I took the first place spot on the top scores. I also had the Atari 2600 version, I found the NES cartridge, and I have the Arcade Archives version on my Switch.
I played Mario Bros. at a Mazzio's Pizza back in the mid 80's through the early 90's. It sat right next to Data East's Shoot Out. I bought the Atari 2600 version at our local Venture Store (same place I got Solaris, Millipede, and Kangaroo). Funny thing though is that other than Mazzio's there really was not any other place that had the arcade even at the main arcades throughout the years in my hometown.
I used to love going to venture and that's a store I have not thought about in 25 years. This was in a lot of our arcades and bowling alleys growing up
What a fantastic breakdown. I had no idea there were so many ports. I actually just got the nes version in the mail off eBay today. I remember playing in the back room of a little country store circa 1986 or so. Then, late 2000’s, my son and I had prob 100s of hours co-op on gameboy advanced SP’s connected together with a cord. Great for travel. One thing to add to the game lore, I heard this game was one of the first that they realized with two players playing at once, the arcade unit could make 2 quarters (or nickels in your case) while other machines made one!
3 notable differences in the gba version are replacing the shell creepers with spinys, the ability to run faster by holding the B button while walking, & the ability to super jump like in Super Mario Bros. 2
Hey guy! Another madman on the internet here; long time subscriber, first time commenter. It’s your infectious positivity, and your sense of humour that’d make even the corniest dad groan in appreciation! 😉 Anyway, keep up the good the good work, just a little bit of appreciation for ya. Stay frosty, cool guy. ✌🏽
It's sad that the original Mario Bros arcade game only got remade (that I know of) in the GBA remakes of the Mario games. It's still a fun game to play even today.
There's actually a pseudo-remake in the NES Super Mario Bros 3. If you're playing with a 2nd player and access the starting point of a world map, you access a secret mode where the two players fight each other in the arcade game Mario Bros.
There's the Arcade Archives version of Mario Bros. on the Switch. Plays great! The GBA version on Super Mario Advance is also available on Wii U Virtual Console (great way to play it on the big screen!. If only it supported local coop, it'd be perfect [the original supported the link up cable for multi-player which sadly isn't supported here, same screen multiplayer, etc])
Amazing memories my friend !! Sound was so annoying, however we always loved it. Hahaha Retro always in our memories, I have opened a session for retro on my channel. They must never be forgotten and left behind. Keep them alive and thanks for sharing these precious arcade games. Eyes peeled for your next post
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries retro games are always good to play again, no matter how old they are, playing them back it’s always a different feeling. Sound always terrible but we love it ha ha. Catch you soon my friend
This has to be one of my all-time favorites. I often wonder why Nintendo has not come out with their own line of arcade cabinets like Arcade1up or iircade which i think would be awesome if they would start to market these classic games. Let's face it these games are over 30 years old and would be big sellers in the home arcade cabinet market. Imagine all of Nintendo's games lines that could be produced.
The 1st time I saw this cabinet in the lobby of a department store the attract mode had me fixated so much my family wandered away and I didn't notice. I remember freaking out and crying. Instead of going to find them I turned back around and continued to watch Mario Brothers whilst bawling.
My older brother and I would love to play this together on the NES and, when we got the '83 version, on the C64. We would decide before a game if we were working together or as enemies and sabotage each other. We never changed our minds halfway through the game, but accidents did happen. It was always fun, regardless of how we played it.
Had this for the Apple 2 back in the day and thought it was the best arcade conversion I had for the system. But I really started to play in the GBA era when it seemingly came as a bonus in half the cartridges Nintendo put out.
The love I have for the Mario brothers. Feels like yesterday o saw this in the arcade at the old Pizza Wheel and my dad and I had tons of fun playing it.
Played this game many times on many systems, including the Apple II version in elementary school. I still love the NES version; my wife got it for me for Christmas a couple of years ago and I played it for hours. The execution varied across the different ports but the core gameplay concept is so simple, basic, intuitive, and fun.
I guess I shouldn’t be too shocked that you overlooked Dave Sharpless’ “Mario Bros. VGA” for DOS. It’s an unofficial port, but I grew up on it, and it’s honestly pretty good. You should absolutely check it out sometime.
Back when I was just a little kid getting my feet wet with video games, I had the Atari 7800 version. My mom actually pushed me to become comfortable with technology in general. Eventually, she even stopped playing video games against me because she knew I surpassed her ages ago... but sometimes, if one of us finds a Galaga cabinet, I might be lucky enough to get her to try again.
The original Terminator movie came out in October 1984, The Search for Spock came out in June of 1984, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was released in May of 1984, and The Neverending Story released in July of 1984. Only Return of the Jedi and Superman 3 were released in 1983.

The first version I played was on the Atari 7800 and I was impressed with the graphics being very close to the NES. Then I owned and played the NES version. I sadly never got the opportunity to play this on a arcade cabinet but I would absolutely would have loved to play the arcade version.
16:21 Something’s gumming up the plumbing, poor Luigi’s in a bind, giant turtles out to get him, creepy crabs are right behind, fighter flies, jeepers, yipes, they’re all coming up the pipes! “Maaaaaaaario, where are you?”
Oh man! I remember that commercial! Gee, thanks for putting that back in my head Patman lol! Now, I'm going around singing "Mario, where are you?" like I did when I first seen it. Nobody paid any attention when I sang it as a kid, but now, my friends are like what in the hell is wrong with you?🤪🤣 Great vid as always my man! Bringing back the good old nostalgia of simpler and funner days! Edit: The turtles, when they get hit, on the Spectrum port look like they're having a Grand Mal seizure, and the ones on the Amstrad look like they're whacking off! 🤣
I had Mario Bros for my hand-me-down Atari 2600, my friend had the NES one. Even as a little kid, I always thought the "wafers" were a weird touch. Certainly they could have just made a squared off gold shape and called it a coin, but I think the programmers just wanted to play around with some color function. And small correction, the last name "Mario" actually premiered back on the live action segment of an episode of Super Mario Bros Super Show. Luigi got a certificate to get one free dance lesson from Shabbadoo (!) and "Luigi Mario" was on the certificate. I'm sure they used that Mario last name in another episode, but I can't remember quite off the top of my head where.
The pow block was an item u can hit in the unlockable super mario bros 1 stage in Super Smash Bros for N64. It later became an item in mario kart Wii & super smash bros for 3ds & WiiU. The slip ice was renamed to Freezie & was also an item in super smash bros melee & onwards. It was also a hazard in a stage in mario kart double dash
@@bleirdo_dude Back in the 90's my local arcade sometimes had the old Atari Star Wars vector graphics game on free play. I loved that game. It was the only game they ever had on free play.
I love your updated review of Mario Bros. My favorite arcade classic. Thanks for your videos! One thing that I noticed when you showed the NES gameplay is that the sprites look closer to the original arcade version than the NES version I played on my Switch. Though you showed two NES versions, neither looked very similar to the NES version I played. Weird.
yea virtual boy, I think I have a total of 50 bucks invested in mine including all the official games from Electronics Boutique and KB Toys, still works like a champ ... cause you can only play it for so long before going crosseyed and having a seizure, quick glance on ebay looks like I could pay off the rest of my car ... but its only a year away so ill keep it until my children throw it in the dumpster when I am dead
If you could include homebrew you could include the Colecovision Homebrew Mario Bros, very well done version almost arcade perfect,it even has the intro music and level tutorials. The only kind of weaknes in it is the enemies are single color,I guess due to the limitations of the system.
Enjoyed Mario Bros in arcade and on 2600. 2600 version let you step on slipice as melting and dispose of him instead of punching from below. Seeing it now, it has not aged well. Lol. Like just, it is a fun co-op AND a "try to off" the other player game.
From what I understand, only the North American home console market was actually destroyed by the crash, the North American and European home computer and arcade game markets were only weakened temporarily, and in Japan nothing happened at all.
Just want to point out that Mario had already taken the name Mario (at least internally) by the time donkey kong made its way to North America as seen in a 1981 ad flyer where he’s called “little Mario the carpenter”
